EXCLUSIVE: Paradigm has landed Rand Holston, the 28-year CAA
veteran agent who exited that agency late last month. Holston will bolster the motion picture lit and financing departments and gives Sam Gores’ agency a well established dealmaker who played on a high level as a film agent at CAA. For Paradigm’s motion picture business, Holston is the highest-profile addition since Paradigm got close in courting the late Ed Limato when he left ICM, only to see that iconic dealmaker choose WME as a landing place for himself and his star clients.
At CAA, Holston had a strong list of writer and director clients, and the immediate question will be who stays and who goes. That list includes Stephen King, Rob Reiner, Wolfgang Petersen, Robert Towne, John Moore, Marshall Herskovitz, Jordan Kerner, Ed Zwick, Jim Ivory, Bruce Robinson and Jon Avnet. There will be a chase for those clients, and Holston’s impact will be partly measured by which ones stay with him. But he will also put Paradigm in the conversation for signings and business they might not otherwise have had a shot at in the past.
Paradigm had been the frontrunner for Holston since Deadline revealed that the agent was leaving CAA and taking meetings. Holston’s hiring is being announced internally right now. “Rand is an outstanding agent with an impeccable reputation,” Paradigm chairman and CEO Gores says. “Our philosophies relating to the entertainment business are very compatible and we are all thrilled that he chose Paradigm.” Holston will work in the motion picture department and with the Motion Picture Finance Group and its head Andrew Ruf.
Said Holston: “Paradigm has a great reputation, and after getting to know Sam and his senior group of agents, it was clear this would be a great fit for me,” Holston said. “Sam has orchestrated a tremendous growth story for Paradigm, which has included skillfully blending new agents into its culture in a way that everyone thrives. I look forward to playing a productive part of Paradigm’s continued growth and success.”

would be REALLY great to see many of those clients follow Rand if he was indeed their primary agent (if there is such a thing over at the Borg).
Those clients still have some big projects left…interesting to see if they have the confidence (especially Zwick and Peterson) that Paradigm can help put together big budgeted studio movies.
Now Paradigm just needs a chic office- their current location feels a bit like a 1950′s country club- and not necessarily in a good way.
Aesthetics, style and image are a matter of personal taste. Paradigm has never tried to emulate the corporate hip vibe of CAA. Rather, Sam Gores has always focused on a classic, timeless style. That’s why he specifically chose the old MCA building designed by legendary architect Paul Williams for the ‘Digm’s LA offices.
If you’d ever been in Sam Gores’ office, you’d know that it is one impressive office in scope and style. In fact the whole building is amazing, albeit too small. And if you’d ever been to their NY offices, you’d know that Sam can do the retro-mod thing too.
But apparently, you haven’t been to either of those places, so you don’t really know what you’re talking about.
Rand was one of the few CAA agents who can read beyond an 5th grade level; helpful if you work in lit; but maybe not with the scripts they push. I guess he could read the non-writing on the wall. And it probably is a shocker, as CAA folks pronounce paradigm, para-dig-’em. They can’t even pronounce the word, let alone understand one, outside of USC.
Rand is very much one of the good guys…
I have no doubt that most of his clients, if not all of them, will follow him. He’s old school and primarily concerned with building his clients careers; as opposed to the now popular crash and burn’em, and fill the agency’s coffers while you’re at it.
Sad for Rand…to go from CAA to a dump like Paradigm. This smells a lot like the brilliant Sam Gores hire of Robert Stein and Erwin More from William Morris…and now…well both of them are out and half way out of the business respectively.
How can you compare?
Interesting that Rand said “after getting to know Sam and his SENIOR group of agents”–that says alot to me–sorry to all you little pisher agents I don’t have for you!
Rand is a decent guy, but also a company man. Back in the day, it was actually Rand who delivered Mike Ovitz’s threat to Joe Esterhaz, which prompted the writer’s legendary response. The Stephen King account is worth a lot; Robert Towne is one of the great writers, but can’t really work anymore. Whether Zwick and Peterson follow, and choose to work is the big question.
Love Rand! Very classy, smart and tasteful.
Cool move Paradigm.
Robert Stein, the sequel….
Rand is a great guy and I wish him every success with this new venture.
Rand is honest , straightforward and very smart, what is there not to like?
Um … how ’bout he’s honest, straightforward and very smart?
Good for Rand & good for Paradigm. Rand is smart, flexible and reasonable… He’ll make the most of this and since Paradigm wants to elevate their presence, this is a great fit. Hope it works for both.
Rand is legit.
This is so silly,
Walt
yeah. where is robert stein, anyway?
Rand is a class act, an extraordinary agent, mentor and friend. Congratulations paradigm and to Rand!
