EXCLUSIVE: Fox 2000 is zeroing in on Jake Szymanski to direct He’s Fuckin’ Perfect, a comedy spec script that the studio bought by Lauryn Kahn that will be produced by Gary Sanchez. This one has Funny Or Die written all over it. Szymanski has developed a profile helming some of the best comic spots for that website. Kahn spent four years as Adam McKay’s assistant, and she honed her skills writing, performing and directing numerous shorts for the website before making He’s Fuckin’ Perfect her first script sale.
The project became a priority at the studio when Fox 2000 bought it for $1 million against $1.5 million. Emma Stone has been circling the project — her interest is how it got on studio radars — and while I’ve heard she’s now unlikely, studio insiders express optimism they will still land her. The comedy focuses on a social media-savvy girl who is pessimistic about love and vets her friends’ dates to find flaws. When that process leads her to uncover the perfect guy, she decides to use her Internet research skills to turn herself into his perfect match. The film will be produced by Gary Sanchez’s McKay and Will Ferrell. The Gary Sanchez team helped her hone the script and gave her notes to help shape it.

Boo. Emma, you can do much better than this over-rated trifle.
Guess Emma finally read the script and passed on it. LOL.
People who write “LOL” shouldn’t be allowed to read or write.
Did YOU read the script? It’s actually pretty good. If you’re hating on it, because you’re not signing the “a milli” jingle, that’s your problem.
Every now and then, a script sells which is an absolute anomaly; weak material goes for a ridiculous amount of money. This script isn’t “bad”, if your expectations are set by the “Funny or Die” bar, which is typically really amateur and immediately forgettable. There is an idea here, but the execution which seems cute on the page is going to die on screen. Basically, it is just barely mediocre.
So tired of women titling their comedy specs with f-bombs to make them seem edgy — though it does seem to fool the studios.
This is the most over-hyped script in years. To suggest that looking into someone on facebook or google prior to dating them is high concept, edgy or new is ridiculous.
I read the script and was dumbfounded that it sold for so much. I’m actually surprised they’re gonna make it
How did you get a hold of the script? You didn’t think it was good? I’m surprised.
Jake’s fucking perfect!
I’m always really excited when a female writer strikes it big, but this script was awful, unreadable even. The dialogue was so grating and everything was so contrived, I did not make it to the end.
@gretchen…couldn’t agree more. This script is terrible!Thank God Emma Stone has removed herself. When will everyone finally wake up? Adam Mckay isn’t funny. never was.Grow up guys…you’re no longer in high school. So over you
Love how female driven comedies, ala HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU, are always about finding a man. Because of course that’s all women care about – find that man that will take care of you and support you so you can settle down and have babies and cook in the kitchen cause that’s where you belong.
Do we HAVE TO keep living in the 50′s (thematically at least, I get the internet makes a bit newer)?
Totally agree.
I mean, even look at THE HELP with Miss Emma. Let’s discard the fact for the sake of this discussion that a film on “The Help” is told from the POV of little miss pretty white girl, but Emma’s character is supposed to be an independent woman.
WHAT THE HELL was that subplot with the idiot jerk she dated? He started off as a jerk, he ended as a jerk. WHY DID HER CHARACTER NEED A MAN in the story? You could have easily lost 20 mins of a very long film.
You watched the movie The Help and THATS what bothered you the most? Emma Stone having a jerk off for a mate? lol
I’m glad Jake is getting into the mix here! I have been a fan of his for a while and more recently with his work on SNL.
As for Lauryn – I did read this script and while I can see people’s point of it not being any “new” concept regarding internet searches – you have to face the facts: NO ONE ELSE has done it. And, we all can relate to the main character – marry that with Lauryn’s witty dialogue – voila! Successful movie we’ll all probably see and laugh at.
Just my two cents…many cents away from $1 million, but hey…
You haterz are so damn predictable — which is probably why all you wannabees and won’t-evers have never sold a script for a cool million. Lauryn Kahn’s got a gift for characterization and a charming wit. For goodness sake, it’s her first script, bitches! Give the girl credit for something.
you go girl
Ten to one this will be retitled “Friend Request”, star Ashlee Simpson and be simultaneously released in theaters and Video On Demand the same day.
This will never get made unless the script is re-written from page 1
I don’t think that insult works when someone stops being a (powerful) producer’s assistant because they sold a script on spec for $1 million.
That being said, I think the project is blech. But good for her for trading on her time with McKay and getting a payday. If only every producer’s assistant were half so lucky.
Yes, because I’m sure if he hated her he would get her a 7 figure payday and make her movie.
Terrible assistants get fired. Wonderful assistants get helped as they move on in their careers. Your logic is completely flawed.
says the 5th year ‘wonderful assistant’
Way to go, Jake. The dude’s been talented since his Studio 22 days. Glad to see someone moving up in the world who actually deserves it.
so we should applaud that she duped them out of a mil? is that what our goals should be? to dupe people with crap? no thank you.
Jesus Christ, what’s with the pile on? Guys’ crap scripts get greenlit every day of the week, total pieces of shit, and they don’t get the treatment this script’s getting. Wtf?? First time ever in my writing career I’m thinking twice about wanting to get a movie made. I love Deadline but boy, it sure attracts the meanies and cynics. Merry Christmas, you bunch of creeps.
Oh ha ha, lady blue, you’re hilarious. Like Lauryn would dare come on here and pretend to be someone else when she could get clawed to death by the extraordinary shadenfreude from the likes of you. People like to come on here just to be cruel. I’m pretty good at snark but these postings are ridiculous (and your backhanded mean girl comment’s no better. How does it make you feel? It would make me feel crappy but maybe that’s the difference between you and me.)
“You’ve Got Mail” just texted and they want their idea back.
But it’s on the Black List. It MUST be good!
I think people are piling on this script because of the PR campaign behind it. The script is ok, but for the last two months, from the black list to variety’s screenwriters to watch, all people have been told about is how great the script is. The writer is talented and has a future, but her reps should not have pushed for all the press about it. In an effort to get her exposure and heat her up, all the press has just caused people to see what the fuss is about and they have come away not that impressed. I dont think all of these negative comments are really about the script or the writer, and are more about all the pomp and circumstance surrounding it. It is a decent script that sold and sold for a lot of money because Fox 2000 thought Emma Stone was interested. It is not Citizen Kane.
Yep, totally agreed. Same thing happened to Diablo Cody.
it’s actually not. did you read it?
How awfully condescending, friendo. So, tell us about *your* last million dollar sale? We’ll wait…
Whether she can write or not, Ms. Kahn’ll probably be working a lot more than you this year, unless your name rhymes with Saaron Aorkin or Zeven Stallion. As I opined above, Lauryn Kahn has a gift of creating quirky, memorable characters which she deploys with a charming, sly wit. I smiled at the scene where the heroine, Charley, bemoans she named her pet turtle after “Turtle” from Entourage but *nobody* gets it! I found it charming that her Frenemy, the perfect girl, talked exactly like she texts.
On top of the charm and wit, the script is mega topical in this social media universe. It’s your basic screwball rom/com where the heroine pretends to be someone she’s not, and then the shit flies when she’s caught. So it’s your typical formula. Newsflash, folks: Only Charlie Kaufman does original *really* well. Studios tend to purchase scripts that are corporately defensible (this one’s got the stamp of approval of both Adam McKay and Will Ferrell; of course it sold!).
Good for Ms. Kahn for working her way around the system, and by the way, for writing a sweet, charming script that looks like it’ll get made. Can’t wait to read her follow up.
Really, you smiled and thought it was AT ALL clever that a character in a movie talks how she texts? Hmm, let me see, that might have been a fresh idea back when they were doing it in BRING IT PART IV and pretty much EVERY SINGLE teen movie that’s come out in the past five years.
I’m guessing you’re 45 yrs old if you’re a day.
Ok, so maybe text-speak isn’t so fresh, but Ms. Kahn made it a lot more charming than I remember.
And what’s so bad about being 45? Some of my best friends are in their 40s. (in my 30s, btw)
Maybe Emma is some of bizzare show business version of “Zorro” who helps out needy screenwriters by feigning an interest in their scripts.
Hey, that’s not a bad idea for a pitch. Movie star by day, lit vigilante by night. We can call it “I’m a Fuckin’ Saint”.
The saddest thing in all these comments is that non of you know Lauryn. If you did you would realize that she would be the first person to be happy if any of you actually sold a script. She is a great person that wrote a great script. The reason the system wins is that studios are competing with people like the haters making these comments that would rather see everyone fail so as to make their failures ok. Instead of spending an hour coming up with the most clever comment you can put behind an anonymous name, go write a script and sell it, be on all the lists and get all the comments. Until you can do that, maybe your literary criticism isn’t that relevant. Anyone want to post one of their scripts to be judged? Anyone?
man, people LOVE to hate!! i’ve read the script and i liked it a lot. jake is fantastic and it seems they are putting together a team of people who like working together and have a history of creating together. my plan: be happy for them and continue working on my stuff in the hopes that someday you will all hate me for the same reasons.
relax everyone, just b/c lauryn sold one doesn’t mean you can’t!
I agree, Haterz. Let’s see your masterpiece. Put up or shut up! You’re bitching about someone selling a spec for a lotta dough, yet you can’t even finish your own script, much less get read? Bitter much?
I don’t personally know Lauryn, but I’ve been entirely charmed by her sardonic sketches on Funny or Die. The one that brought a smile to my face was “WTF?! Girl”, a hilarious take on seemingly every incarnation of “What the Fuck?” a Jersey transplant can muster. Fun stuff AND well acted, imo. Why all the hate for this sweet, charming Jersey girl? WHAT THE FUCK???!!
