Fox today was the last broadcast network to reveal its midseason plans. There were no major surprises. The J.J. Abrams-produced time-travel drama Alcatraz will air in the Monday 9 PM slot as announced at Fox’s upfront in May. As expected, it will share the slot — once occupied by real-time drama 24 – with 24 star Kiefer Sutherland’s new drama series Touch. Alcatraz launches on January 16, Touch on March 19 after a preview on January 25 behind American Idol.
Resurrected comedy Breaking In officially joins Fox’s new two-hour, four-show Tuesday comedy block that will launch March 6, when Glee goes on hiatus before returning with all-original episodes. With pilots Family Album and Little In Common dead, Fox is short a show for the block, so it will air New Girl reruns along with new episodes of New Girl, Raising Hope and Breaking In. The multi-camera I Hate My Teenage Daughter, which premiered after The X Factor last night, is not on the schedule, but Fox says that it will return as originally planned in spring, airing behind a 90-minute Idol performance show. Idol‘s premiere date has been tweaked. The reality competition series was originally going to launch its 11th season behind the NFC Championship game on Jan. 22. Idol will still air after the big game, but as a special. The new season will now start on Jan. 18 with a Wednesday-Thursday premiere. Fox also kept its original scheduling plan for Bones spinoff The Finder intact. It will premiere on January 12 behind a Bones rerun and will air after the Idol results show starting the following week. Bones will return in the spring. New animated series Napoleon Dynamite has been assigned the Sunday 8:30 PM slot currently occupied by Allen Gregory, also per Fox’s original plans. Is it me or is this the most confusing schedule ever?
I agree. I HATE when they do ‘previews’ and then air the follow-up a more than a month after the initial airing. And with how this is organized, I need to create a cheat sheet to keep on me to remind myself when things are airing. It’s not exactly ‘viewer’ friendly.
I agree.
It’s not you. It IS the most confusing schedule ever!
Is it me or is there a lot of interesting new shows out this midseason. Between Touch, Smash, The River, Missing, The Firm, GCB, Apartment 23. There seems to be a lot of really good shows this midseason.
I was hoping that Awake would make it at NBC, but overall, there are several interesting shows anyway.
So, does that mean that Alcatraz will only have 11 episodes? Considering that the show will enter its first season with a two-parter and exit it with one as well, I can’t figure out whether this is a good or a bad sign from FOX.
How is FOX going to get 22 episodes of Bob’s Burgers aired unless they extend it into the summer?
Also, as Nellie pointed out, FOX is short 1 1/2 comedy for the Tuesday comedy block and are showing New Girl encores. Uhhhh, what about I Hate My Teenage Daughter, which you left off the schedule?
Breaking In gets an encore as its lead-in, proving its a burnoff and was an unnecessary pickup(even though it escaped Friday).
I don’t know but I hate my teenage daughter is one of the worst shows ever
When will the nets learn that we’re not very interested watching Christain Slater in a weekly drama or comedy? As evidenced by his past failures. I’m also predicting a 2 to 3 million average drop in Idol viewers due to the oversaturation of this tired genre.
I Hate My Teenage Daughter was quite funny and Alcatraz looks very promising.
“I hate my teenage daughter’ was BEYOND embarrassing. what a piece of crap. jamie should be embarrased and get another agent!…as should everyone else envolved in this mess
Isn’t Fox going to run several NASCAR races in prime-time on Saturday nights in March, and then broadcast Major League Baseball every Saturday night from early April through the Summer??
I think this season midseason is 100 more stronger than Fall.
FOX has some great shows, Alcatraz and Touch. I can’t wait for NBC. Smash and The Firm . And ABC Missing and the River are in my list too.
I wonder why networks have their best looking shows for midseason.
I think Smash will be the biggest hit this season.
I have watched the Alcatraz promo and it looks really good.
I am really excited about midseason , seems a lot of new great shows will air. The Fall new shows were not that great, I am only watching Once Upon. a time.
In my opinion the best new midseason shows are Smash , Alcatraz , Touch and Missing.
Looks like FOX is pulling another Dollhouse: Renewing a good show because of vocal fans, only to place it in a situation where it’s destined to fail. That way they can spin it and say “Well we renewed it and tried but the show just couldn’t get the viewers.” It’s such a blatantly transparent move — what other good reason do they have for moving New Girl to the end of the night? Just stupid.
Ah yes, scripted. The more, the better.
What the hell kind of schedule is this? Damn is it confusing.
One confusing schedule alright. I do hope they bring back I Hate MY Teenage Daughter. Being the mom of 2 teenage girls there was quite a lot I could relate with. I could see it needs some tweaking here and there. More true-to-life. Perhaps the writers could enlist a real mom of teens. Talk to some teen girls even. Unscripted reality is much better than scripted reality..
No “Terra Nova”? Is it being cancelled or just has a later premiere date?
Due to their overseas budget, Terra Nova is only committed to 13 episodes a season, Keith.
If it comes back for a 2nd season – it won’t be until next fall.

NBC and FOX have the least viewer-friendly schedules. They are way to hard to figure out.
It’s no wonder viewers are sick of broadcast television. They can’t figure out when a show is on and when they do, it’s been cancelled or put on hiatus due to low ratings.
That’s the problem with a creative business run by straight-up, analytical numbers people.
