Finally, a big ratings bump for The X Factor. Fox series’ first season finale last night (3.8/11 in adults 18-49, 12.6 million total viewers) was up 31% from last week’s result show in 18-49 but did not hit a series high. It was a solid finish for the heavily promoted singing competition from Simon Cowell whose protege, Melanie Amaro, won the $5 million prize. But The X Factor never came close to the ratings heights of the show that made Cowell a star in the U.S., American Idol. The first season finale of the long-running Fox reality series, which aired in the summer of 2002 with very little promotion, drew a 10.7 rating among adults 18-49 and 22.8 million viewers. However, The X Factor season ender edged the first season finale of NBC’s breakout The Voice, which also aired over the summer and averaged a 3.7 demo rating and 11 million viewers in June. Comparisons to both finales are relatively apples-to-apples because, despite airing in season, The X Factor ran during a pre-holiday week with depressed viewership levels.
It was a rocky first
season of The X Factor, which didn’t lack the controversies Cowell is so well known about in the U.K. From the abrupt sacking of judge Cheryl Cole a week into filming and her replacement with Nicole Scherzinger to the accusations of juicing performances and using lip-singing to the controversial dismissal of frontrunner Rachel Crow, The X Factor made a lot of headlines in its maiden voyage though they didn’t translate into higher ratings. Despite falling short of the 20 million viewer level Cowell infamously predicted before the launch of the show (X Factor averaged a 4.2/12 and 12.4 million in Season 1 with Live+7 data), the show helped Fox score a fall demo ratings win with consistent performances on 2 nights. Still, it was off the 6.0 18-49 rating guaranteed to ad buyers at the upfronts, leading to reports about advertiser reimbursements, though News Corp. president and COO Chase Carey recently said that Fox is not in a make-good situation on the show. And the need to keep X Factor on every week took a toll on other Fox series, most notably freshman New Girl. After a white-hot 3-week run, the rookie comedy was pre-empted for 2 weeks for baseball coverage and 2 weeks to accommodate X Factor. New Girl returned from the 4-week hiatus down 19% in the ratings and never recovered.
While more of the size of Cowell’s other U.S. series, America’s Got Talent, that his previous starring vehicle American Idol, The X Factor has been a solid performer for Fox and has already been renewed for a second season. There will likely be major changes for Season 2. “We change these shows all the time,” Cowell recently told TV Guide. The main replacement targets have been Scherzinger, who got mired in the Rachel Crow controversy, and host Steve Jones who never broke out the way Ryan Seacrest did on the first season of Idol. However, no decisions have been made, with the process likely to begin early next year. With a 2-hour X Factor and virtually no competition last night, Fox won in both 18-49 and total viewers. The only 2 other originals were NBC’s game show Who’s Still Standing (1.5/5), down 12% from Wednesday and a Prime Suspect burnoff (1.0/3), up a tenth from its most recent episode.

The X Factor looks so fake. Simon Cowell grates on me. Annoying Brit, please go back across the pond.
The problem with X Factor is that Simon changed-
On American Idol he was an employee earning a salary, so he could be as mean as he wanted to be to the singers (to the public’s delight) because it didn’t matter to him who won or how successful or lack thereof the contestants became. He made the same $$$ regardless.
But now the X Factor is HIS show, and he has financial incentives in the success of the contestants- suddenly he sings a new tune, encouraging contestants, proclaiming them “world superstars”, and becoming the President and CEO of the Hype Machine. He’s no longer the voice of the public, he’s instead just another PR guy shoving mediocre talent down our throats.
That’s why X Factor is not a huge hit – everything is manufactured, there’s no raw emotion, no heart, and not even enough meanness to make it entertaining. You can smell the corporate hype machine from the get go.
Excellent point. Now the only “meanness” is the manufactured catfights between Simon and L.A.
BTW, does anyone who watches the show understand the difference between winning $5 million and winning a $5 million recording contract? Melanie certainly will as soon as she decides that her first album requires 3 music videos, each with $750,000 budgets.
TMZ said that she will receive a $1M advance against royalties for 5 consecutive years. She also has the ability to earn additional $ after meeting certain thresholds. Deal appears to be in line with the now standard 360 deal as X plans to exploit her on several platforms. Actually, this is the reason why I thought Rachel Crow would win. Seems to have the best shot at earning X more.
You hit the nail on the head. Simon’s honesty was one of the most appealing aspects of American Idol and I was looking forward to that with the X-Factor as I couldn’t stand the awful replacements on American Idol. Now Simon is no different than any other Hollywood shill. He will pimp his acts regardless of how bad they are, which makes the show a loser for me. Plus the overly produced nature of the show is very unappealing. Dancers, flashing signs, explosions…No thanks.
As Angela stated, you hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately, X Factor just has an overall air of phoniness. There is zero chemistry on the judges panel and the host is no Ryan Seacrest. Even Simon and Paula’s antics feel forced.
At least the folks who produce the nauseating show, “The Voice,” were wise enough to choose Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton to balance the snarky and obnoxious, Adam Levine. Those judges seem to have a likability factor more in line with “American Idols’s” Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and accident-prone, Steven Tyler.
The X Factor is a huge hit around the world. I’m sure Simon is crying into his many millions of dollars…..
I loss interest in the show once it got to the live shows, although I did remain a casual viewer. However, I am looking forward to next season. I have faith that production will be able to smooth some of the kinks out by then.
How do you judge the success of a show? They are talking about four or five of the contestants walking away with recording contracts.
The show is just too over the top in every aspect. Too much of everything. Too many dancers. Too many light shows on stage. It drowns out the contestant. The sound is horrible on TV. The singers sound like they’re singing through a noisy crowd. It doesn’t sound like we’re getting the sound from the mike of the singer. Nicole and the host being the problem with the show? They’re just scapegoats because I can see so many more real problems. The show is pretty horrible. It looks like they spent a lot of money on an average singing contest.
Am I crazy? Did Ryan really break after the first season or did it take years? Are we comparing Steve in season 1 to Ryan in season 10?
I think what she means is that Season 1 American Idol had two hosts, if I remember correctly. Ryan and some dude named Brian Dunkelman. Seacrest got the hosting gig and Dunkelman got canned.
Brian didn’t get canned, he quit the show on his own. They wanted him back.. Remember, Idol and Seacrest was not the juggernaut that it is now.
Holy smokes do they have to replace Jones. The guy had no ability to improvise. Seemed uncomfortable the whole time. And never seemed to be having fun. Who knew Seascrest was the Star of Idol!! Scherzinger was bad but no more so then Abdul, Randy JAckson, or Jennifer Lopez. If they could get Katy Perry between albums it would be a boon to the show and a great way to promote Perry’s next album.
Cat Deely would be the right touch. She’s very sympathetic and very good.
A new X-Factor host? Wouldn’t it be a hoot if they got Brian “What was I thinking?” Dunkleman?
They should revamp the whole panel bar Simon and hire a human host to take over Steve the robot
As a person who has NOT watched the X-Factor, I have a few suggestions to get me to watch. Fire everyone except Simon & Paula, and for the love of GOD please do not get another Randy Jackson look-a-like. I also suggest they move to a differnt studio until the live shows start, I HATE the big auditorium for the auditions and other stuff. It makes me think of America’s Got Talent, which I also don’t watch. Also as much as I don’t want to be mean, they need to hire the make over people from AI because the contestants look a mess.
and Simon and Paula don’t make you think of American Idol? He should have never gotten Paula on board, this was supposed to be a brand new show not American Idol Fall Edition
Ok I don’t watch any of the TV Karaoke talent shows but I know way too much because you can’t escape the news the next morning. And I know on the Voice they don’t see the contestant.
So, how do they all differ? And how Talented is American that these shows keep coming up with thousands of contestants season after season? We must be a really talented country. How do we do it? What is in the water? Are we that talented or has karaoke singing become acceptable talent?
Please enlighten me.
How to improve X-Factor:
1. Go to three judges – by getting rid of Nicole and by getting rid of the “groups” category that no one really cares that much about anyway. This way there is less time on the judges and more on the singers. (Remember when American Idol went to four judges? Three works better).
2. Replace Steve with someone who has an actual personality. Someone with a little stand-up comedy experience would be a better host. If producers insist on a subject of the British realm being host then get Graham Norton or even Dame Edna – heck I think even Prince Charles would be more exciting then Steve!
3. Simon being “nice” doesn’t relate into “big” ratings – so why worry about album sales if he disses someone? I liked Chris Renea’s rapping – but I just wanted Simon to make some rude comments on some of his “singing” performances.
4. Get rid of the kids. Yes Rachel Crow could sing, but that doesn’t mean I want to see a little kid crying and heartbroken on national television. Maturity wise you’re pushing it if even a 16 year old can handle that kind of pressure/rejection after constantly being told what a “superstar” they are.
Does anyone else have some other/better ideas?
Graham Norton would be AWESOME, His talk show is fun and guests actually have FUN on there, and plus the show is 1 hour but when the guests talk that hour flies by so fast. That Pussycat Doll Nicole has to go and has to go NOW, She was only in it to improve her career{what she has left} she couldn`t make decisions and when your looking to Paula Abdul for advise I think it`s time for you to go, and by the way, if it weren`t for the sound bending for good ole Nicole she`d be like us and WATCHING the X-Factor, But Jonathan i LOVE THE GRAHAM NORTON IDEA.
Just surprised this show even got renewed after this fool Cowell hyped it up to a point where his guarantee of 20 million viewers per week fell flat on its face. Major changes need to be made with this show for Season 2, starting with some new judges, a new host and a new platform for evaluating talent.
I get the rationale behind your suggestions but what you’re describing would essentially make the show American Idol (before Kara).
They need the low age limit and groups to NOT be like Idol. They need to take more of a lead from the UK version. Get judges that can do their job and not look for a witty sound bite. Stop using the blaring pre-recorded backing vocals (Chris would always be drowned out so you couldn’t hear the notes he missed).
When they fired Cheryl Cole so quickly it was telling the show was lacking in solid decision making.
When they get Cheryl Cole back, I will know without any doubt that this show is on the right track for a magnificent second season, sadly I will not accept anything less.
Get real. Cheryl Cole also refused to vote on UK version just like Nicole and the difference is that at least Nicole can sing, has not made racial comments and has not got an assault conviction, has had a UK No.1 and did better on UK version than Cheryl Cole, so let’s not pretend Cheryl is as sweet as pie and get distracted by her “I am a victim” look! Cheryl battered a woman remember? Cheryl Cole has to sit next to Simon or she cannot function – that’s probably the real reason why they got rid of her because we all know Paula is the only woman sitting next to Simon! Most people I know wanted Cole gone and she did not deserve that position as she cannot sing, she need Girls Aloud as they make the music, with Nadine Coyle being the best vocalist, as a solo artist Cheryl sucks!! If Nicole has to be replaced then preferably by an American and a real artist that the world recognises would be better.
Cheryl Cole who?
My biggest problem with X-Factor – the live shows were terribly staged. Why do they think I want to view the contestants like I’m in nosebleed seats in the audience? Show me the person singing up close. How am I supposed to connect with and judge the singer if they’re 10,000 miles away?
This failed the groups category worst of all. They would rarely show any of their faces up close. I hardly knew what any of them looked like, except for Lakota Rayne. In fact, I couldn’t believe how poorly the show handled groups. I had no idea who the people in the groups were. Tell me their names, show me their faces a little. Why would I vote for them when I have no clue who they are? And I’m not blaming Paula, she did a phenomenal job with the groups. The show failed them and her in promoting and editing them.
Also, Rachel Crow for the win. If anyone had the XFactor on that show, it was her. Astro has it too. Commenter Heather really hit the nail on the head with her analysis of Simon. It’s way too obvious that he’s not being honest, he’ll say anything to make the show succeed, and after Rachel was gone it was all mediocre talent aside from Chris Rene.
I liked the show for the most part, but I agree the staged arguments were a little much, especially Simon praising the signers (since he owns them) and chiding the other judges. I liked L.A. Reed alot, I thought he was very good. I like that the judges work with the acts and help select songs. It drives me up the wall on Idol when they say to the contestants “you chose the wrong song.” The stage set was awesome, although the fireworks and lighting was sometimes over the top.
I think the problem with the contest this year was there was no real suspense in the last half of the season, Melanie was the best singer of the field, even though I liked others better. In the last show, it was obvious she should win.
I disagree about Cheryl Crow, I thought a lot of her performances were contrived and thought she should go and so did America, even if she has a deal with Disney.
Steve Jones was a very odd choice. Would like to know what they were thinking on that one. He was stiff and not warm at all, which in the USA is essential. Get Cat Deely to host and watch your ratings soar as she did on SYTUCD!!!! lol
They need bigger star judges, I mean who the hell was that Cheryl cole? No wonder they fired her, no one knew who she was, she was boring to go with it, I think Nicole is great though but agree that that Steve jones needs to go, he should have been fired with that cole lady
Nicole was a disaster as a judge, and as big of a nobody as Cheryl is. Nicole can’t even chart any of her singles here in the US.
They need to get rid of both Nicole and Steve, and possibly LA.
Bring Cheryl Cole back and get Dane Cook to host the show!
The problems:
Nicle was a mess and had no business being a judge – did you hear her latest single? Embarrasingly bad. Plese send her back to Santa Monica.
Steve Jones, although a nice bloke, he is devoid of a personality and has no sense of timing or drama – he must go now.
Paula, get back on your meds and make some headlines, she was controversy free and I found her dull and uninteresting in this venue – please leave.
The screaming audience, constant idiotic screaming at the wrong times drowned out the judges and singers. Simon can correct this promptly.
Massive over production, no more dancers, siezures inducing lighting and general all around awfullness of staging.
X-Factor must correct these problems for season two, immediately.
X Factor stinks. Period. Why?
– Bloated, over-the-top production numbers that drown out the talent.
– “Mentors” whose battling egos overshadow the contestants.
– Simon Cowell has become an asshole. (Or maybe he always was?)
– A host who is a dead man standing.
I watched this season because of an investment in the talent. I will never tune in to this show again. Awful and awfully full of itself.
Nicole has been targeted by haters and not justifiably so. Nicole was better than Cheryl Cole on UK X Factor and notice how quickly Cheryl Cole got out of her sick bed to get back to her job as Nicole was loved by most people here in UK. Cheryl Cole also refused to vote during her role as Judge, so what makes her any better? and at least Nicole can actually sing. Nicole has done very well in her role, after all, it’s just a singing competition.
So many opinions, some are in step with me. Get rid of Steve Jones (pronto!). He comes off as a “bully” or “punk”. He’s about as exciting as a wet firecracker. Perhaps a good choice would be a DJ or radio personality (American voice) who can control and lead properly with “rushing” the judges. Perhaps , “Delilah” Rene Luke from radio fame.
Yes, move down to three from 4 judges. The worse, inept, tone deaf, choice-ridden one to release would be LA Reed, whom is both “black-one-narrow minded with Rap. Pitiful.
The rest of the show can take care of itself with time and patience.
Firstly, stop picking on Nicole, no worse than Paula, LA or Simon. And why are some people wanting Cheryl Cole? exactly why? Cheryl also refused to vote on UK version. Also picked two failed auditions and rejected a beautiful singer Gamu. Try watching the old tapes and see for yourself. Also insulted a contestant live on air on issue which had nothing to do with X Factor and after the embarassment was proved wrong and still did not apologise. UK called for Cheryl’s sacking. But Cheryl is Simon’s crush. If you hate Nicole then times whatever you think she is by 10 and that is Cheryl Cole. If Nicole is to be replaced (I personally think she should stay), then she should be replaced by a REAL star preferably American, like Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, Janet Jackson, Celine Dion but Cheryl Cole? the woman who cannot sing, has criminal convictions for assault, and has said things racially improper? because why? she is pretty? so are thousands of other women. Get real Deadline. Get over it, she was sacked. Even if Nicole is not right, for sure neither is Cheryl Cole.
