ABC’s 1960s drama Pan Am is taking to the web in an effort to keep interest alive in the freshman drama, whose fate for a season renewal has yet to be decided. Show producer Sony Pictures TV is offering up the series’ first nine already-aired episodes, including the pilot, free at the iTunes Music Store beginning today through January 5. Episodes also are being made available via Amazon, Vudu, CinemaNow, Sony Video Unlimited and PlayStation Store. The show is currently on hiatus and returns to ABC with new episodes on January 8. So far, 14 episodes of the 1960s-set series have been ordered — the last added after some back-and-forth negotiations between Sony TV and ABC. The network said it won’t decide whether to bring back the show for Season 2 until May; in March, Pan Am is being replaced on the schedule by midseason dramedy GCB.

Even FREE I wouldn’t watch this show! it’s terrible. Let it go ABC
it’s a well-produced and fun soapy show, actually a really good fit for Sunday night. like the article said, it’s free on amazon, itunes, and practically all the platforms now.
It is a good fit for 10 Sunday. It’s easy to go to sleep after. I can’t sleep after Homeland.
I like this show and I hope it comes back. It’s come pretty far since the pilot and the overacting has been toned down a lot. Free episodes online are a great idea!
There are far worse things on television – people need to tone down the hate.
It was free on network and no one wanted to see it why the hell would they want to watch it on a smaller platform
It really isn’t helping the program much that ABC claims to have such high hopes fror when you place it on a long hiatus like they are doing to this program. if they really wanted to make this show more relevant, they would air a few episodes now and gain some much-needed traction to help it along the way. It would also help them to bring about stabil;ity and some organization to the show’s storylines and ridding Ricci from the cast would help too. Hoping the show continues but at this rate, can’t see it lasting past February.
I haven’t seen the numbers it pulled in but it seemed odd abc wouldn’t test air it mid season atleast 2 to 3 episodes they spent a fortune promoting it; and isn’t abc going to have a huge female skewing-numbers hole to fill on Sunday evenings? Gotta be more to this story. Story-wise it’s not that great but Sony did well on casting, production value, etc etc. some simple retinkering after the break I thnk abc is dumb not to try again, seems to me this one might have legs for them. Agree with above poster NO ONE is going to sample that series again next year the general public is far too smart for that these days, they know when networks aren’t behind something.
Even though America isn’t into Pan Am it’s hot in European countries. Sony wants to keep it going however they can. Those perios costumes and sets don’t pay for themselves. If they can get a full season pick-up that’s more foreign and eventual DVD sales.
Sony just needs to move the neogtiations from ABC to HBO. Without the restrictions of broadcast television, Pan Am might stand a fighting chance.
Otherwise, to quote Miles Massey (Intolerable Cruelty): “Let it go, pal, walk away.”
What is the reasoning behind ABC ordering and Sony agreeing to one add’l episode? We often hear of “the back 9″ being reduced to 6 or 4. And sometimes that’s the kiss of death. But 1?! Is there one forthcoming week ABC has absolutely nothing else to program in the hour? Did the network not see all potential story and production elements in the pilot and subsequent 12? If “Pan Am” is a doomed flight, why did Sony and the show’s cast and crew agree to ABC’s highly unusual request. Yes, it’s two weeks’ work, but the production is deficit financed like all the previous hours. So, if things are looking “iffy,” why not just abandon ship/cancel the flight? I don’t watch “Pan Am.” Strictly interested to know from a business standpoint. Finally, I would much prefer to see a scripted show (like “Pan Am”) on the schedule rather than a reality show, news magazine or game show.
Its doing well internationally…. Sony wants to keep it going so it’s a sad order butbetterthan nothing. Studios typically do not make money anymore on initial network airings, nowadays that’s not enough to cover production or salary costs, however they o make money with a series sometimes in other areas so guess is Sony trying to make funds back also it may keep a glimmer of hope on for a return to the network should abs mid season programming not work, though a gamble. It’s somewhat of an unusual move as most studios used to turn down orders of anything less than 5. If this becomes a trend = not good. Sony can also use iTunes sles data to try and impress abc if ignificant though my guess is they won’t be significant, even teens on iTunes know the word free has trouble written all over it.
I really love this show. It is a vague reminder of a by-gone era when relationships really were different, and society was different. The travel is fun to watch, the relationships and interactions are fresh ( = completely different from the usual fare), and the production value is really high – they don’t skimp on the numbers of extras, and set design. I just find myself relaxing in the world of Pan Am!
Clearly a move by Sony to build continued interest.
ABC could care less, really – the only reason they haven’t officially canceled it yet,is they don’t want to lose what viewers they have!
Sweet! Snagged ‘em! Now I can rewatch in nice quality at my leisure, even if ABC is dumb enough to cancel this entertaining, promising show.
Charlie’s Angels, Community, Rules of Engagement, Nate…and now this? Crappy season for Sony. What the hell are those guys doing over there?
I love Pan Am. Hope they have more plans for it. I really enjoyed the previous episodes. It’s sad that a wholesome show can’t get ratings. I’m sick of reality shows.
Thrilled to see that Sony and ABC are giving Pan Am a chance to find its feet …. Mad Men did not even catch many an eye until its 2nd season, it refreshing to have this promising show with Sunday night as a perfect slot. Sundays are for winding down, simple relaxation AND I am definitely TIRED of ALL the cheesy REALITY shows (I LIKE my neighbors WAY BETTER when I dont know what ridiculousness goes on in their homes!)…. just because people slow down and stare at a car accident DOESNT make it of any value. Please continue to take a few RISKS … the cable channels, as the underdogs have been scoring many HITS because they do take risks, in fact most of my household viewing including Mad Men were cable offerings … finally you gave us something to watch. And the writers are developing a better rhythm for the show … hope they keep tying in the historical pieces!! Looking forward to more Pan Am!!
