EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros is making a deal with Guy Ritchie and his new partner Lionel Wigram to come aboard The Man From U.N.C.L.E., the film that Steven Soderbergh left just recently over budget and difficulty with casting after George Clooney dropped out. Based on the classic TV show, the film has a script by Scott Z. Burns. Ritchie and Wigram are forming a shingle together after making the Sherlock Holmes films. The intention is for Ritchie to direct the film.
This would be the first project under the new shingle for the British director and producer, who open Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows on December 16. The film premieres in the UK tonight.
Soderbergh has set his sights on The Bitter Pill, a thriller that Summit will put into production next year, after this week closing a deal that calls for a green light commitment on the Burns-scripted thriller.

With Ritchie attached, I’m interested. When Soderbergh was going it, I was excited.
I meant “doing it” and not “going it.” Oy.
I was anicipating with interest the U.N.C.L.E. remake with Soderbergh. He would have made it with a 1960′s cool that would have made it an appropriate homage to the original, while updating it to today (as he did with OCEAN’S ELEVEN).
But Ritchie? No thanks. His films resemble video games or music videos more than movies. His reboot of SHERLOCK HOLMES relied too much on camera gimmicks (slow-motion action) and the requel looks to be more of the same. Guy will ruin U.N.C.L.E.
i’m feeling Benedict Cumberbatch for this reboot
The new remake of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is about to introduce a new crop of UK actors who are ripe and ready for USA big studio movies.
Never happen. People like their movie stars to be good looking. Ugly actors are supporting or TV only.
If only that were true, but Jeremy Renner (just one example) being tapped for the Bourned lead indicates otherwise. Cumberbatch is much better looking than Renner.
LOL, What? Cumberbatch is hideous looking. Interesting for TV, but never a matinee idol.
Good for Lionel! He is honest, smart, hard working and one of the nicest producers in Hollywood. He deserves nothing but success.
Absolutely correct, Lionel is one of the true gentlemen in Hollywood.
I hope that ritchie keeps the sixties setting.
UNCLE, a sad second rate excuse for ripping off the spy genre during the Bond phenom. Second rate stories, second rate actors and was never a super hit, despite what the people re-writing history would like you to believe now. Will it be just another TV show re-tread destined to DVD limbo. Maybe Ritchie can do something with it. Hope so.
UNCLE was never second rate anything! The two stars (Vaughn & McCallum) popularity at one time surpassed the Beatles! That is fact.Try reading the history of it’s time on the air. The show suffered from “campy” writing during its run as writers tried to make it more “Batmanish” when that show was popular. Overall,it provided great escapism for young boys of that era (me). It was huge with the college crowd, too. It was “cool”.
I still want to know why no UNCLE reunion on NCIS. Vaughn and McCallum aren’t getting any younger!
You are exactly right jimmags. I watched the show as a teenager (along with I Spy) and it was a lot of fun and very enjoyable. There were excellent performances by Robert Vaughn, David McCallum, and Leo G. Carroll as Mr. Waverly. Hopefully, Vaughn and McCallum will have cameo roles in the new flick! I’m looking forward to it, but I don’t think Robert Downey Jr. is right for the Napoleon Solo role as I’ve heard.
Lionel learned the biz under the legendary Elliot Kastner and picked up his smarts but not his acerbic manner…
Whoever directs and produces it, lets get going. This has been a long time coming!! and why in the heck did Clooney quit? Is he a bit of a snob perhaps? Whatever. We UNCLE fans have waited since the late ’60s, early 70′s for this, lets go!! At this rate I’ll be 60 before it comes out, and I’ll be 57 this year (2012)Some of my friends are terminally ill, some have died already, lets get this movie made before i have no one to share it with.
I mentioned the possible dream team for the new U.N.C.L.E. production earlier, but can’t see it anymore, or read what people thought. How about Jason Statham as Solo and Matt Damon as Kuryakin. This combo would definitely have staying power that could launch sequels!
Above in reference to Tom Cruise being interested in starring in the production. No one last night thought he would be a good choice, I agree!
