In their latest collaboration, director Spike Lee and writer John Ridley have teamed for an HBO biopic of Marion Barry, with Eddie Murphy attached to play the larger-then-life former Washington D.C. mayor. The HBO Films project, first reported by the Washington Post, is currently in development. Ridley is writing the script based on several pieces of source material, including the 1994 book Dream City by D.C. journalists Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood, who will serve as consultants. Lee is on board to direct. The two are executive producing with Murphy. HBO previously developed a Marion Barry biopic a decade ago with Jamie Foxx attached to star and Chris Rock to executive produce, but the project didn’t go forward. Barry, currently a member of the Council of the District Of Columbia, did two terms as a mayor of D.C., from 1979-91 and 1995-99, separated by a six-month stint in federal prison on drug charges that stems from a video of him smoking crack cocaine. Lee and Ridley, who have been developing a movie about the L.A. riots, recently partnered on HBO’s drama pilot Da Brick, which Ridley wrote an Lee is directing. The pilot is in consideration for a series pickup.

Sounds interesting. Spike and Eddie haha
Solid.
John Ridley is a talented writer with acerbic wit. Three Kings and U-turn are two of my favorite scripts/movies. He and Lee collaborating on film projects is an exciting prospect. Shake things up a bit.
Acerbic…great word.
Let me guess, according to Spike Lee, it was the white man who put that crack pipe in Barry’s mouth.
Why would Eddie Murphy want to be involved in making a movie about a crack-smoking ex-mayor who went to jail for 6 months, was then reelected as mayor when he got out of jail. Barry should be in jail right now for not paying taxes for most of the last 10 years. Eddie Murphy could find better roles to play than a crack-smoking criminal. It’s time to wake up Eddie and smell the roses. This movie will be designed to blame all of Barry’s criminal activities on the white man. Barry is not a type of man to be held up as a shining example to the black children of Washington. Don’t equate Marion Barry to a man like Martin Luthor King who is respected by the vast majority of both black and white people.
The only buzz worthy roles for African Americans are the ones in which they play real people. Can’t somebody give this group decent material based on fiction?
This is such a no brainer. Could be genius. This role is PERFECT for Eddie. Does anyone else see the amazing potential of this project for Eddie’s career?
I agree with you. Eddie is a better actor than he’s given credit for and this is the right role for him. He’ll knock it out of the ballpark.
WME packaging during the holidays.
Eddie Murphy can act! Spike Lee can direct! It’s like having Jackie Robinson and Cool Papa Bell on the Branch Rickey Brooklyn Dodgers. Eddie’s brilliant work in Dreamgirls is coming to fruition. I remember Eddie’s former manager, Richard Tienken told me that after Beverly Hills Cop he wanted Eddie to do the Martin Luther King Jr. story as a major motion picture. That would have been genius – Eddie said he just wasn’t ready to be that serious. Well, Richard Tienken’s day in the sun is fast approaching its glory. EDDIE IS READY!
John Ridley rocks, plain and simple. You do your thing, my man! Onward and upward.
Eddie was correct not to play Martin Luther King, Jr.
All Eddie needs is the hat. “Action”
Meanwhile I’ve been cast as Eddie Murphy is a Starz biopic centering on his late night driving habits.
With Lee Tamahori directing.
