EXCLUSIVE: Holly Hunter has been set by Mandate Pictures to star in the untitled comedy that will mark the directing debut of Young Adult and Juno scribe Diablo Cody. Hunter joins Julianne Hough, Russell Brand and The Help‘s Octavia Spencer. The comedy follows a sheltered young woman (Hough) who loses her faith after a plane crash and heads to Vegas to experience the wild side of life. Hunter will play her conservative and overprotective mother. Mason Novick is producing and Mandate president Nathan Kahane is exec producing with Cody. Production starts next spring with Lionsgate handling international sales.
Since ending her run on the TNT series Saving Grace, Hunter has wrapped the Walden Media drama Won’t Back Down, and she just finished playing the title character in the Antoinette Beumer-directed indie Jackie. She’ll reunite with The Piano helmer Jane Campion next year on the BBC/Sundance Channel miniseries Top Of The Lake. Hunter’s repped by ICM and Management 360.

Diablo Cody is like so 2005.
Diablo’s ‘Young Adult’ is completely 2011. The woman is crazy talented and I think it is so great there’s screenwriters out there who aren’t writing scripts that are like everything else. Good luck to her and I for one am excited to see what she can do behind the camera with her own words. really cool cast also- I hope she shakes the Barbie sheen right off of Hough.
You might want to check the BO numbers that are coming in on Young Adult before you declare Diablo Cody 2011. Her name is so polarizing at the BO she might want to think about going by her real name, Brook Bussy, from here on out.
Wow Bill- you really have it bad for Brooke. Why all the hatin’? As for the BO numbers on YA, based on a per screen average, it’s already doing very well. Once it opens wide, it will build. Brooke is talented, and never did anything to you (maybe she didn’t want to work with you?)- whatever, question is, why all the negative comments?
I wish Holly Hunter would do more mainstream movies. We see too little of her now.
Is this all Mandate knows how to do? Put money losers into production off the dreaded Black List and pump out any crap Diablo Cody has sitting around the house.
