Open Road Films released a new 90-second spot for Joe Carnahan’s chilly thriller The Grey starring Liam Neeson. It opens January 27. The trailer first was cut for Harry Knowles’s Aint It Cool News website after the film killed at Harry’s Butt-Numb-A-Thon, the 24-hour movie fest that has become a launching pad for films that appeal to the geek set.

Anyone else surprised at the incorporation of Twitter quotes and attributions, as well as the hashtags and @s for the movie’s stars, producers, etc?
Praying this doesn’t catch on.
Yeah, I didn’t like that either. Those types of things look silly fast.
Was excited until all I could see was these giant fucking: @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@.
Must be short for the @sshole who thought it was a good idea.
I like the concept of personalizing reviews with tweets. It’s democratic, and there’s little downside, since we know quotes are cherry-picked already. However, repeating sources (three Aint-It-Cools in a row?) does suggest desperation. An illogical conclusion, perhaps, since tweet-reviewers likely have no other connection. Call it an optical response to the visual repetition.
One other thought: unlike more formal news-media, twitter is full of people getting paid to generate buzz. There’s a moral hazard here. I wonder, is there an advertising one?
Love Joe and the movie looks great but a bunch of reviews from twitter accounts and ain’t it cool news random number 667? or whatever. Please this movie and Joe deserve better.
that’s Harry Knowles. And Nording was the other one. Not random at all. Know what you are talking about before you post.
They’re random names to the people who don’t frequent Ain’t It Cool News. Which means 99.999% of the population.
It’s an unbelievably stupid marketing decision. It makes it look like they couldn’t get any good reviews or quotes from the big name reviewers and publications the majority of the population recognizes.
Or…the movie hasn’t been submitted for reviews yet so Open Road is capitalizing on the amazing buzz that the movie got from Ain’t It Cool’s Butt-Numb-Athon series. Actually sounds like shrewd marketing for a low-cost, independent movie. And, for most people who actually know anything about movie marketing, most movies aren’t screened for reviewers 4+ weeks from release. That happens closer to the release.
Spot on. I was there. This movie is TERRIFIC and had the best buzz of the 13 movie 24 hour film festival put on by HK.
Didn’t Fight Club use quotes from “random” people from IMDb for promotion, or was that just for the DVD release?Man. it is Good. I am beautiful woman and int;erracial romance is my dream.so I joined Blackwhite’Planet.COMit’s a co;mmunity to co;nnect with beautiful and nice people! You wanna get laid tonight? Maybe you wanna check it out.Audiences are smart and who of them have heard of ainitcool and fanboys were already going to come out and support it so what’s the point here, except to damage?
Bottom line, the vast majority of people out there won’t know who the people quoted in the trailer are, and they don’t come from recognizable sources. It looks like the filmmakers had their friends and relatives say nice things about their movie so they could quote them.
If the film hasn’t been screened yet for reviewers, don’t bother with the quotes.
Well, it doesn’t really show anything that was already seen in the trailer Deadline posted a little while ago. But, it’s certainly new in the sense that they’ve gone crazy with the #hashtags and @twitternames.
I meant to say “wasn’t already seen”… oops. Way to go, Magilla! Now all the erudite Deadline readers think you’re a dolt!
No, now we think you’re an idiot cos you’re replying to yourself ;o)
Using twitter fanboy bites to market your film isn’t smart. I believe it’s a good film but it’s going to ostracise a huge adult audience who will feel this ploy is gimicky and potentially false ie reviews from less then reputable publications – i’m looking at you and your history Sony. Audiences are smart and who of them have heard of ainitcool and fanboys were already going to come out and support it so what’s the point here, except to damage?
Desperation

If Harry Knowles was paid… I mean loves this movie it must be good!
I’m all for including the general public’s opinions in marketing campaigns. Entertainment critic jobs are among the most absurd and redundant professions in existence.
I’ve seen this movie before. Back when it was called, ALIVE.
DUD.
no, it was called THE EDGE. But i loved the Edge! yes… i was the one.
Online geek-enthusiasm-based marketing campaigns are great!
Get these mother-f*ing wolves off my mother-f*ing plane crash!
sorry but, Ain’t it Cool News ain’t cool anymore. could careless what that guy living in his mom’s basement thinks.
I’d schedule this on a double bill with a re-release of NEVER CRY WOLF for balance.
Why release this to HK & AICN? Mein gott, their time was literally 20 years ago. The WORLD has moved on!
