CBS Films picked up Salmon Fishing In The Yemen as a possible awards contender after it premiered at Toronto in the fall, but the distributor decided it was too late for the tale of Middle East politics and fly-fishing to enter this year’s Oscar race. It instead has set it for a limited-run release March 2, 2012. Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas star in the film directed by Lasse Hallstrom and written by Oscar winner Simon Beaufoy.

I saw this at TIFF, the movie’s great and I like this trailer. Well done.
A smart, original movie for adults? Who knew Hollywood still knew how to make this kind of movie?
It’s not that CBS Films decided it was too late to run for Oscars this year, but actually that CBS just didn’t get their act together. Like everything else they do, CBS Films simple does not function.
Hello Jeremy,
What you’ve written is incorrect. We discussed 2011 vs. 2012 with the filmmakers shortly after picking up the film at TIFF and everyone agreed that 2012 was the better option.
Hope you enjoyed the trailer,
CBS Films
Jeremy…this Xmas is way too crowded too rush this great film into theatres, with no time for trailers, no publicity, no in-theatre, etc. your slam at CBS films is idiotic…more distributors should be so strategic.
Why does Ewan’s accent sound fake when it’s his actual native accent? (right?) There’s just something off there. I think he’s trying to do a Sean Connery impression or something. That or he’s officially become more boring than Dylan McDermott (a seemingly insurmountable task, until now)
Looks fantastic. Performances from Blunt, McGregor, and Thomas look great. Great choice of music in there, trailer gets the emotion without giving everything away.
Good to see a new one from Lasse Hallstrom.
Sure, it looks sort of cute. But many bad movies have good trailers, and despite the encouraging comments (most of which are likely from CBS Films employees) CBS Films has yet to open a movie successfully. I would agree that if they acquired it in October, releasing before Q1 2012 would be a rush. Then again, if you’re going to wait, might as well wait til Q2. Q1 seems to be the dumping ground for mediocre films that are quickly forgotten.
WHY DOES EVERYTHING LOOK LIKE NANCY MEYERS DIRECTED IT?!
I’m having some kind of breakdown, clearly.
I like this trailer and will see the movie but the music is insipid.
This movie seems to have echoes of Local Hero, a really great film.
Saw this at TFF, loved it. KST rocked it. (She made this ab fab)… A must see.
Congrats on CBS Films turning out a typical feel-good, studio fluff piece about as earnest as the BP apology for the Gulf Oil spill. Do I have to spend two hours watching a “bumbling” idiot try to see past his navel so that he can fall in love with uber-hot Emily Blunt? Believability strained. Wonderful how it takes people of color to show the whites the true meaning of life. Lame. The f*cking Cold Play song was the real capper for me. No thanks. I can only hope that the money Hallstrom made will fund better projects.
Pass.
Awww….sounds like Grumpy Greg needs a hug. People of color can’t teach a lesson? That’s awfully smug. A snippet of music from a band you don’t like causes you to cast doubt on a filmmaker you appear to have affection for? Really? You’re THAT narrow? Next time you order salmon I suggest switching to a sweet marinade – back off the lemon – it has soured your disposition.
You’re a dumbass. It’s not Coldplay. But I won’t tell you WHO it is, so you can go on and enjoy your miserable, ignorant existence.
Looks good, but wow, wretched timing. I guess salomon fishing really isn’t the cure for civil war.
Can you tell me the song that plays at the end of the trailer?
Delightful film. Leaps of faith, unbelievability, yup. But, superbly jelled together. I was supposed
to be watching how the line “fundamental technicality” played a large role in the film; I suppose the
what was meant by that was the McGregor was successful in getting beyond his coi fish…….
I loved the element of faith in the film………with the exception of an assassin and a few bad guys
in the film BBC was able to make the Arab world likable. I am an “older” person so perhaps not
so cynical as some of our youth……..a good ol’ love story and someone loves salmon. So do I.
