Zhang Yamou’s fact-based drama The Flowers Of War is China’s entry into Oscar’s foreign-language race and the nation’s most expensive movie ever at a budget of almost $100 million. Here’s an exclusive trailer for the pic, which centers on a man (Christian Bale) who finds refuge with a group of women in a church during Japan’s raid of Nanking in 1937. Wrekin Hill is releasing it in the U.S. and has set it for a qualifying run December 21 in New York and December 23 in Los Angeles and San Francisco, followed by a later bow nationwide.

i like the director, but this is one ham-fisted, cheesy trailer.
I wonder how much of the film is in English, (vs Chinese Mandarin), for it to qualify for foreign language entry? That said, really enjoyed the trailer and looks like an interesting story set against a big epic historic event.
It’s about 40% in English, with the rest being mostly in the Nanjing-dialect, as well as some mandarin and Japanese.
white man saves the day…again. yawn
No. It’s not a Hollywood movie. Instead, it’s a Chinese movie. They won’t let that happen.
No, it’s a great chinese film .
This movie looks like a real cheesefest/snoozer. A white man, a.k.a. Christian Bale, pretending to be a Catholic priest saves some Chinese girls and prostitutes from the Japanese, who are locked in mortal combat with the nationalists [Guomindang (GMD)]? Who knew that uneducated hookers and little kids in China during the 1930s could speak English so well… At least, the ridiculously-stupid, bad-cgi action sequences from the previous trailer were cut.
So basically, the heroes are a Christian and GMD troops, even though Christians remain persecuted in China today — freedom of religion doesn’t exist there — and the GMD fled to Taiwan, which China blatantly threatens with total annihilation if it were to become more assertive and independent. The irony here is amusing since Beijing is championing this movie about “heroic” groups of people that it seeks to control and oppress. Oh, man, the Chinese Communist Party must really be desperate for an Oscar!
Oh, I don’t think you know china and chinese, all of your view for this film is based on your old images and Prejudice , as a chinese , we must keep in mind the pain history which happeded in 1930s, it don’t care about we are the Chinese Communist Party or GMD. we are the chinese people !
Can you be any more obvious? Depending on which Chinese source you go by, The Flowers of War comes out on December 15th or 16th. This means you haven’t watched the movie but that doesn’t stop you from ranting and raving about it. Everybody who disagrees with you commies isn’t Chinese or Chinese enough? Gosh gee golly, I didn’t know you’re the final arbiter on a someone’s ethnic purity. Better luck next time, Mr. Illiterate Chinese Personal Assistant.
i do not think you are truly chinese, at least not from mainland.
firstly, not only bale, but also the hookers (Ni Ni et al.) saved the children; sencondly, the knife of Japanese criminal wouldn’t tell GMD from CCP in that massacre. it was all of us CHINESE PEOPLE that suffer the extreme injury and pain.
it’s not totally like what you thought, go watch it
good
So excited for this. Gonna bring lots and lots of tissues. Ni Ni and Bale look amazing.
Anyone remotely interested in this film should see “City of Life & Death”. It’s an amazing movie about the same subject matter and should have been submitted for last years Oscars.
Zhang Yimou is a hundred times the director that Lu Chuan is, and one should definitely not see that movie before seeing this one (or after).
Zhang Yimou crafts intricate tales of human emotions and turmoils, and only he can do the story of Nanking justice.
oh,No, I’m a chinese and I have seen this film “City of Life & Death” , I personal think it isn’t a good film and it hasn’t been submitted for last year Oscar.
Thank you, Zhang Yamou for this great movie.
amazing? i love it. as well as Zhang Yimou, Bale, Ni Ni
Great movie trailers! Hope will not let me down
Amazing!I iove it!
I was at the screening and it wasnt just “the white man” saving the day. All the actors were brilliant and its a very compelling and beautiful story. Its one of the best movies of 2011
scratch 2011, its one of my favorite movies period
I think the Lady will blow it away though.
Looks great! Only comment is this: It’s the “Rape of Nanking” not the “Raid of Nanking”. Nearly 500,000 of unarmed civilian men, women and children were raped, tortured, butchered, and mutilated over a several day period. That’s not a “raid”. Chinese families were forced to watch their wives and daughters being raped by the Japanese soldiers, then slaughtered. Some families committed suicide rather than be subjected to abuse. The Japanese have yet for apologize for this “raid” decades later. And we in the West (which I love but also know to be imperfect) wonder why the Chinese are arming themselves?
Yes, they should arm themselves. Because it happened so recently.
Well, your sarcasm will go over real well with 1.2 billion people. And you wonder why some over there hate us? Really?
You lost me with your last sentence. Since China wasn’t the only country that suffered severely under the Japanese in WWII, you basically justify that North Korea is arming itself.
Just now,I’m too excited to make a right word ,mistake the “file” for the “film”!It’s too perfect!
movie wont make back its budget
Whats the point in seeing the movie, the trailer just showed everything. NEXT!
ikr? Why would you ever watch a movie based on a book when you already know the ending?
…
No, it didn’t show ‘everything.’
You have little idea what really happens in this powerful movie based upon on what the trailer shows.
Jeez.
this is a best film
This post has been Media Bombed by PR people hired to promote this movie.
You are wrong! for me only like the film’s director Zhang yimou and all of his film in past years , I woked in a US company in Beijing office .
Nope. Sorry. Media Bomb is right. PR team is working it’s tail off to try to present a crappy looking trailer in a good light. Maybe the movie will be good. Who knows. But if the movie is at all like this trailer, then chances are it’s a turkey.
If that was the case, couldn’t they hire people who knew English better? Yi’s is just killing me!
I agree with the others; it’s gotta be a PR blitz. Flowers of War is China’s foreign film entry at this year’s Oscars. More specifically, it has the full backing of China’s government. It’s not a huge secret that China hires people to write uber positive comments on China related issues. President Hu Jintao in 2007 said government organizations should put together “comrades with good political quality” into “teams of Internet commentators” for the “reinforcement of ideological and public opinion front construction and positive publicity”. While this movie releases to Chinese theaters on December 15th or 16th, already there’s a bunch of extremely positive comments from users about a movie that isn’t in theaters, a movie they didn’t watch. Every unfavorable comment in this thread has been contested with often belligerent and/or inane replies. If they were “lucky” enough to be at a screening, what a coincidence for them to land here at Nikki Finke’s website. Yup, inept Chinese media bomb is right on the money.
well, you are so creative and full of imagination. no one pay me.
Im just an average person who enjoys movies lol. Think whatever you want but the people who watched the sneak peek of the film really enjoyed it. I hope through good word of mouth this movie will gain popularity. If you watch the movie and don’t feel moved by it then you have a cold heart… seriously…
You are correct, knight. This is a very emotional film. I sobbed in it and I rarely ever do that.
The prostitute are the the heroes in this one.
This trailer is so far and away better than that first hideous piece they released. Thank heavens they finally got a better company to produce this. I’m still dubious that the script is any good, but as always, Bale will be worth the price of admission.
The first trailer was for the Chinese market. Different countries, different trailers.
Wow. This looks great.
I just finished Unbroken. A book about Nanking is on our bookshelf, but don’t yet have the stomach to read. Unbelievable what man can do at times. God bless those who fought back -whether or not in uniform.
These movies and books are important. Otherwise, we’ll forget and more likely repeat.
It’s good to see Batman doing some other odd jobs away from Gotham City.
See: City Of Life And Death for a ‘real’ Nanjing foreign film.
