Well, if this isn’t a first, it’s pretty close. 20th Century Fox has put together what is essentially a promo for a promo — touting the release of its trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. The actual trailer is due out Thursday via iTunes’ Movie Trailers site; the film, by the way, opens June 8, 2012. The clip touts Scott’s return to his genre roots with the film that stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce and Idris Elba. Here’s the promo:

Oh no, please don’t make this a trend, no one cares about a promo for a trailer. Just release the dang trailer.
i just made a comment on a comment. see? the trend is starting already.
they do this all the time for music videos. unfortunately it’s going to happen for movies.
Exactly. Why put a promo for a trailer that’s coming out in four days vs a real “hot” trailer like ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ or even *sigh ‘Wrath of the Titans’. Both will most likely make more money and be hotter news scoops than this.
All hail King Ridley. Fuck yeah, after seeing the batman trailer this brings back hope for the higher guard.
Read a lot of comments disparaging a promo trailer: Do you people have any idea how this industry works? BO depends on HEAT. Get it. Fucking trolls
This trailer for a trailer is AWESOME! It tells me nearly nothing, and makes want more.
Why am I in this business?
Don’t know. You could go back to Ohio?
The Dark Knight rises trailer is so fantastic they are putting trailers for trailers in front of that trailer!
All kidding aside, I am excited for this.
I’ll never forget seeing the first “Alien” many years ago, We didn’t know anything about the film or its premise going in to the theater and it was an incredible thrill ride. James Cameron’s follow-up was a rather cartoonish take on Ridley Scott’s vision. In my opinion there is no comparison, “Alien” is a much more engrossing film. I cannot wait to step int the megaplex to see this film. I hope I am not let down.
I whole heartedly disagree….
In fact, I’d be as bold to say that James Cameron’s Aliens is actually one of the finest action pictures, albeit sci-fi action pictures, that we have. The direction, production design, characters, score, and editing are phenomenal. Weaver was nominated for an Oscar. A tight, incredibly atmospheric and suspenseful, three act action/drama/sci fi/monster movie mash up.
The score alone has been lifted and imitated more times than I can count.
I’m a film snob, a cineaste… and I feel Cameron’s Alien is one of the best fucking action flicks from the 20th century.
Thanks, I’m done.
Dude, you are seriously annoying.
Already saw the bootleg of the trailer FOX!
What we need next is a first look at the preview of a teaser of what’s going to be a making-of of the the hottest trailer of the year.
A promo for a trailer… because we love trailers THAT much? Just make a decent movie Hollywood.
I DO want to see the up-coming trailer and I DO want to see the movie. But is it ever a good sign when somebody calls their own work “epic”?
Sadly, I’m pretty sure the Twilight movies have done this too.
thank you for telling us when the actual trailer premiers, as i was about to waste my time watching this worthless POS promo.
I think honorable mention goes to The Album of the Soundtrack of the Trailer of the Film of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
At least they didn’t make us watch a commercial before showing the commercial for the commercial.
And there’s more! Looks like there’s a countdown, because here’s the “2 days left” teaser with even more footage:

Was that a trailer for a trailer?
Why haven’t I seen a trailer for this trailer for the trailer?
Guy 1: Dude. I had an awesome idea.
Guy 2: chocolate-flavored pasta?
Guy 1: No – that’s pretty epic, though. Check it: Trailer for a trailer.
Guy 2: Dude…
Guy 1: Boom – mind blown.
