Good pre-holiday news for the 7 staff writers on the TBS comedy series Tyler Perry’s House Of Payne. The Writers Guild of America, East has negotiated a new collective bargaining agreement with the series’ producer Tyler Perry Studios. The new contract, a side letter to the Minimum Basic Agreement covering the major studios and networks, increases weekly minimum weekly salaries by 15% and the minimum payments writers receive for scripts by 20%. Because residuals are based on script minimums, residuals payments will also increase 20%. The new minimums increase by the MBA formula (2%) in May 2012 and May 2013, as well. The new agreement was reached under circumstances far less dramatic than those preceding the first deal between Perry and WGA in 2008, which followed more than five months of negotiations and protests by some writers who claimed that they were terminated by Perry over their unionization efforts. The writers’ actions included picketing the opening ceremony of Perry’s studio facility in Atlanta.

No one deserves a paycheck for writing such crap.
those guys write like a hundred episodes of that show a year. they deserve to get paid fair union wages.
They need seven staff writers to come up with that garbage?
Wow, just in time before the show goes off the air. Awesome.
Hopefully the contract will affect his other shows. Congrats writers.
Yes, the show is obviously crap, as is everything else that follows the name Tyler Perry. But let’s tackle the bigger issue here. How come this man has been allowed to work outside the Union rules for so long?
This is great news for the shows terrible writers. Now they can continue to churn out this crap with a little more money in their pockets. But this also goes to show how useless the WGA is. It needs to be blown up and put back together. Hopefully with some writers at the helm this time. For those of you who don;t know, the WGA is led by John Wells, a one time writer is now primarily a producer with producer interests. It’s ridiculous
Shows how little you know. WGA is led by Chris
Keyser – PRESIDENT.
Tyler Perry is a jerk…a cheap SOB who has a chip on his shoulder. Those writers should make even more for the crap he makes them write. says it all.
The show has an audience and that is the only measure of succe$$ in entertainment…it’s called show bu$ine$$ and Tyler Perry is damn good at it…but yeah he should pay his writers…that way he doesn’t have to waste his own time writing those god-awful shows which I have to agree stink to high heaven…but poets and short story writers with real talent are probably working at Wal-mart or something so I don’t blame TP for taking the cash and holding his nose
Non-guild signatory show. They hire non-union writers. Those actors are SAG and he’s DGA, so he has to meet SAG and DGA requirements to cast them and to direct the episodes. In 2008 when the initial charges were levied again T.P. he was NOT a member of the WGA. However, he was a member of SAG and DGA. That speaks volumes as to his level of respect (or lack thereof) for the craft of writing… Happy for the staff writers and the other writers who benefit from the increase.
Why blame the writers for the crappy scripts when they’re obviously following the direction of Perry and the network?
Clearly none of you know how hard it is to get a job writing for TV or you would just shut up and be glad some writers got what they deserved, regardless of how much you respect the content.
Tyler doesn’t pay his writers because he thinks writing is easy. His proof? Madea I – VII: easy, on-the-nose, cliche-ridden, poorly-filmed scripts in dire need of continuity oversight and an editor made him hundreds of millions. Why should his tv be any different?
I personally know someone who ‘ran’ from his show. The writers are truly at this unprofessional egotist’s daily whim, and that’s why the show sux.
His writers deserve every dollar they can get and all the stationery they can steal!
great news just before the holidays being that tyler is now a member of the 1%’ers he will fire those writers and get new ones..supply and demand is the fodder of all capitalist! If there is any bright side to this the writers get great experience at turning creative inn short order. No matter how sucky the show is that skill is priceless when it comes down to them creating their own pilot efforts. Everything gets rewritten, so its good to pump it out fast so you have a template to rewrite.
Does anyone remember the original writers who made Tyler his first 300 million that STILL don’t get a dime for the residuals on any of the episodes aired daily but stood up for union wages?
Why are most of the comment I’ve read about this great man haters. He doing a dam good job with the show. By the way keep watching what u all call a crappy show and he’ll keep geting paid lol.
Everybody talking about how the show is garbage but the bottom line is you people must obviously watch it dummies and the fact the man made 130 million this past year he is doing something right and if you haven’t notice the show is clearly not canceled and is still airing new episodes every Friday night so bottom line is STOP HATING on the man let him shine like all the other top people in Hollywood
