When Howard Stern finally made a deal to join Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne as a judge on America’s Got Talent, the radio icon was immediately criticized by morality groups like the Parents Television Council. Stern in the past brought up the fact that original judge David Hasselhoff had bouts with the bottle — remember that widely circulated cheeseburger video –and nobody raised an eyebrow when he judged talent on the show. Off the air, Stern has led a squeaky clean life. I think the only critics he should answer to are the subscribers of Sirius XM Radio who pay monthly dues to hear his show and watched him cut back to three days per week and add to what was already a liberal vacation schedule. We understood it was either that or watch Stern retire, but it’s still a surprise to see him adding a side job. In a world where Clint Eastwood is reportedly part of what sounds like a Kardashian-like reality TV show about his wife and daughters, why shouldn’t Stern be entitled to judge this karaoke contest? Here, Stern answers the man he is replacing, Piers Morgan, on why his critics are wrong and why he will make a worthy reality show judge.

The Parents Television Council tried to retaliate against Stern for something that happened to them 12 years ago. Shirley Jones resigned as the PTC’s honorary co-chairman after Stern confronted the “Partridge Family” mom on the air and correctly accused her of blacklisting.
I don’t watch the show so I could care less. However, Stern as a human being is a scumbag as are the men and women on his show who will allow him to say and do anything to them. What a pig.
You’ve obviously never listened to the show.
No. I never let him listen to the show and now he is an idiot who makes assumptions about people he does not know. plus he has no sense of humor.
Wow you must lead a fun life. Commenting and getting stressed out over something you’ve never listened too.
Grow Up.
Please go away.
Makes assumptions about people he doesn’t know… Sounds exactly like what you’re doing, cause you never listen to the show.
Hey geniuses! Take a look at who wrote that comment. It’s a joke — and a pretty funny one too if you have the braincells to understand it.
If the “Moral Majority” (idiots like you) even knew the guy, or listened to his show, you’d feel like a complete fool for even making this statement.
Isn’t he the shock jock that had porn starts having orgasms on his radio show? And you want the moral majority to listen to this filth and degrading of women for what exactly? Seems to me that you’re the idiot, and a Stern fanboy to boot.
I have listened to the show and agree with TJ. It is a repulsive side show.
I AGREE COMPLETELY. WE’LL HAVE TO STOP BUYING FROM THE SPONSORS OF THE SHOW.
Oh for Heaven’s sake, the entire E! Channel schedule is based on a pornographic video performed by a woman who is a role model to millions of twelve year old girls. Where are the protests?
Well said.
Will he be using a laser pointer on the female contestants?
What does that even mean?
He used to use a laser pointer to point out the “queso de coatagio” on a womans thighs…
Sounds like you never saw or listened to the show, either?
I’m a Christian, but I’m one of the few that are not easily offended. If you find something offensive, turn it off. Why do people want to silence things or people they disagree with? If you don’t like Howard Stern as judge on this show, don’t watch it. I’m more offended by comedies that aren’t funny, thrillers that don’t thrill and scary movies that aren’t scary. But that’s all opinion and subjective too. That’s why the off button is the greatest weapon for those who are easily offended. Just don’t touch mine!
I commend you for being a Christian – good choice. But I’m sure you realize you do not speak for all Christians. I would think the majority of them are saddened that NBC put a scumbag like Howard Stern on a family program. And I can’t blame them. TV supposedly has something for everyone, but there seems to be fewer and fewer choices for people who just want to see a nice family program with no controversial sex-tape whores, or filthy shock jocks involved.
Howard Stern hasn’t been a “shock Jock” since the 80s! Nothing he does on his show is AT ALL shocking. If you actually listened to his show you would know that. You thinking he’s a shock jock is like me thinking I Love Lucy is a dirty show because they said the word “pregnant” 70 years ago! Keep current, my friend.
Same here. I’m a Christian and proud of it. I also don’t go around being offended all day.
Shouldn’t go around being offended all day… you’d be a tool. You should be offended that a porngraphic demon like Howard Stern will be on a family TV show however.
At the end of the day, Howard’s appeal are lesbians, sex, naked women, sex, and the personal sex lives of all of his guests, sex, bare ass at the MTV Awards, etc.
As such, if you remove these bits from Howard, what is left to entertain those tuning AGT to see Howard…a 50 year old plus radio shock jock with a loyal, but limited audience.
It is interesting to see NBC and others invest so much money into talent reality formats which peaked sometime last year.
I think a Grudge Death Match special between all of the judges on these shows should be the year end finale.
Limited audience? He has more listeners per day then Leno, Letterman, and Conan combined. Give your head a shake.
Tj, u need to get laid.
I never let him get laid either. Now he is a social freak.
All these talent shows have a judge who’s job it is to tear into the bad acts, that’s what Stern’s job will be to do. I’m sure he’ll be booed the first time he ripps into some poor slob and makes him or her cry, they hired him to be nasty and I’m sure he won’t let them down. I’ve read alot of storys about how nice he is behind the scenes, they didn’t hire him to be warm and fuzzy.
Grow up! If u dont like him then dont watch/listen! I for one will b watching americas got talent now because of him! He will at least b honest and fair. His radio show is one thing, tv is another. Youll see a totatlly diffrent side of him. Team free speech. Down with the uptights!
If you are watching the show because of Stern, seems like you need to grow up since his core audience is immature, juvenile boys.
I agree with Sean, ALL TV’s come with OFF SWITCHES and channel changers, but I’ve enjoyed this Karaoke contest and just bought Landau Murphy Jr.’s Album. I like to see people with talent going for and attaining their dreams – there seems to be so little of that going around these days.
This is different than NOT watching offensive material. I tuned into Stern and lasted about 10 minutes. His treatment of women is not funny and the sad women who feel this is the only attention they will ever deserve from men are even sadder so I DO turn him off and have no problem with the following he has other than the stagnation of our society to move on to better human understanding. It’s burlesque and the future is 3D Imax.
THIS THING that NBC did is like having the evening news coverer the Porno Awards, and if they did I’d stop watching because there a is place for that but not when it’s involving the family and to bring this into my living room will make me stop watching something I used to enjoy.
Is this show so desperate for ratings they have to bring him and his like out of the smut shops and into the main stream? I hope it works for them to gain this kind of audience and loose the families they used to have. I’m done with them and will change channels.
I agree with you Vidian. There are comments that if you don’t like it turn it off and normally I agree with that too…the problem here is this is an established show with established watchers. Why I wonder should we have to turn off a show we enjoy if a bad choice was made in replacing Piers?
My plan is give it a chance; if Howard wants to act like a judge even if he tells off the bad acts or makes fun of some fine. If he starts to get raunchy making sexual comments about every lady on there or otherwise going the way of his radio and former TV show then I quite watching the show. I’ve always thought of this as pretty much a family show that any age could watch together so I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that.
I’m sure these comments will have voices from both Stern zealots and PTC advocates. I’m neither of those. (I like Stern but am not a subscriber.)
That said, I think it’s short sighted to “expect” Stern to be crazy and offensive. Say what you want but he’s a smart guy. At this point in his life he’s got to think about the next move for himself and it’s not as attractive (professionally) to be that way in your 50s.
I think he’ll still have his obvious edge and will say things that are a bit harsh but I think that’ll be done in good humor with contestants who are obviously there for TV time.
But then again, I could be wrong.
Howard Stern’s appeal is not solely or even predominantly sex or lesbians. It’s honesty. He is the least full-of-shit person in media. He is unsparing of himself and incapable of hypocrisy. That’s what makes him unique, original and compelling. But I can understand why much of Hollywood would object. The same people who couldn’t stand a bit of ribbing from Ricky Gervais will hate Howard.
exactly.
Howard Stern and Ricky Gervais are two entertainer on the top of my list.
I’m not a member of any morality group, and I’m not religious. However, I still think Howard Stern is a major scumbag. I watched his show several times many years ago when I was younger, in hopes of seeing some T&A. However, I eventually decided that his personal foulness and his abuse of co-hosts and guests was more of a turn-off than anything fun I would see. His appearance on the show won’t affect me because I think America’s Got Talent is boring and I don’t watch it. However, I think it is a sad state of affairs that he has so many fans. We may see that his fans are actually fans of shock and he might come across as a royal dufus on a prime-time show.
He’s brilliant. He’ll bring nothing new to reality show judging. He won’t say or do anything that hasn’t been said or done before. He’ll use the show as material for his radio program. And he’ll claim he’s the reason for all the viewers. And they’re paying him millions… brilliant!
From one talentless reality show star to another I’m impressed.
maybe you are talentless but Howard? seemed like you enjoyed your time with him on the air. too bad he could not ask you about your fake marriage.
what is absurd about all the above criticism is that it’s obvious none of you actually listen to his Sirius XM show. It’s really funny. And, contrary to popular (mis)belief, it’s not “lesbians, strippers, freaks” or juvenile humor. It’s incredibly subversive, shrewd, honest, and original. That’s why almost every top comedian – Kimmel, Fallon, Letterman, Sam Kinison (RIP), Lampenelli, Louis CK, Jon Stewart, Chris Rock – have ALL been repeat guests on his show and all praise Howard for what he does. So top being a reactive, close-minded lemming and listen to his show and judge Howard for who he is, not for who you assume him to be.
People critical of Stern CLEARLY haven’t ever listened, but have only listened to what others have said and made sweeping assumptions. Turns out, Stern is one of the BEST interviewers out there. Beyond the sex and puerile stuff that put him on the map, the untethered, mature Stern is thoughtful and above all else… Honest. Right or wrong, his show follows a simple credo: no B.S. and he adheres to it fiercely. Is there sex and porn on the show? Of course. Because we are a sexualized society. It always seems that those that rattle their purity swords the loudest are the biggest perverts anyway.
I love that we live in a world where an aging rocker, notorious for biting the heads off animals and partaking in every drug known to man (so much so that he’s no adorably addled), can now be embraced for his family values. You think the Kardashians are a better example of how to live a life? At his core, Stern tells it like it is… Perhaps an ounce of honesty is what’s needed.
Also, do you really think he’s gonna carry his show into prime time? That’s just stupid.
Ultimately, I think its a shame Stern’s doing the show. I think he’s too smart for it. I think Stern as a Costas style interviewer would be a better fit. He’s far more interesting than people give him credit for.
You clearly have never listened to gis radio show. He is bright, witty, and honest. Also its couldn’t care less. Because the way you wrote means that you can actually care less. So your the dummy. Pig
The show was unwatchable before Stern got there and will continue to be so. It has nothing to do with Howard. Why don’t all you cry baby’s do something meaningful with your life..Read a book, find a job, do something that will benefit society.
John does have a point. I find Stern entertaining but that doesn’t change the fact that AGT is unwatchable dreck.
Also, I find it suspicious that many of the negative posts (with different names at the bottom) all call Howard a “scumbag.” Different posts, same poster perhaps?
What the heck does that even mean? I have a wife, a family and a full time (9 years) job. Because someone likes something you don’t, they’re reprobates with no redeeming qualities? Wow. You must be fun at parties.
As Mike’s post points out, Howard’s work ethic, in a word, stinks. My guess is he’s going to do one season and then quit so it’s not worth getting upset or excited about Howard joining the show.
The way Stern talks bad about Jay Leno it is a DISGRACE to put him on the proud peacock network. JAY LENO is a stand up guy (and a stand up comic – now that’s humor, stern fans, who wouldn’t know it if it bit them in the ass)
JAY LENO expouses the conservatiovbe values AMERICANS hold true. Suck IT, Stern fans. Get Stern off of the proud peacock that Jay, the wittiest man in America, calls home.
Whoa there Walt! As Stern fans, we know JAY LENO’s humor all too well as it originated on the Stern show first and then JAY LENO used it for himself. JAY LENO is a comedic thief. He has been his whole career. Watch a youtube video for examples…there are many. And also…for which AMERICANS does JAY LENO espouse? I am pretty sure there is no single person with a single set of values, be they conservatiovbe or whatnot, that could possibly espouse for AMERICANS. We are one of the most diverse and opinionated groups of people on the planet. For every million people who watch JAY LENO on a given night (usually a little over 1 million), over 300 million don’t. They watch different shows or nothing at all because they are different people.
The “proud peacock network”? I have a sinking feeling that “Walt” is Stuttering John and he’s been demoted from Coffee Cup Commercial Bumper Guy to Leno’s personal social media crony. The way you keep saying “proud peacock” is totally creepy.
And Whitman’s right. You don’t speak for Americans. You DEFINITELY don’t speak for me. Fafa Fooey.
The Peacock hasn’t been proud for quite some time. And Leno is a no-talent, backstabbing hack.
Mike
you’re confusing American Idol/X Factor/The Voice
with America’s Got Talent with your
“karaoke contest” comment.
while there are singers on the talent contest it also features a wide range of entertainment acts.
with Howard is not in his radio persona
i think he’ll be a good judge. yes, it will occasionally
pop up, as i’m sure this season might feature a few more
scantily-clad contestants on air for him to offer comments.
still,
as someone else pointed out the council goes after this without seeing him during a broadcast and ignore swill such as the kardashians, jersey shore and all these other reality no talents.
Who even remembers who Stern is? His show peaked in the late 90′s and has been sliding towards obscurity ever since. He’s nearly 60 years old, out of touch with current culture, and has no appeal to anyone under 40. Maybe this will reinvigorate him, because he clearly no longer wants to be a radio personality. The fact that this story only has 20 replies speaks to his brand recognition, positive or negative.
Ya that’s why Sirius pays him $100 million per year, because he’s a has been. Cmon!
Stern needed to be put out to pasture years ago.
Another desperate media company scrapes the bottom of the barrel.
you got the wrong end of the barrel. Mr. Stern is the cream of the crop, and they’re lucky to get such an upstanding, moral, brilliant, and FUNNY person on their silly show. I only wish CNN had hired him to replace reptilian larry king to do an interview show instead of that bland peers morgan.
Cary, obviously you are an uninformed individual. Stern’s fan range from 18-65. Probably the range is broader and also includes women. Some are highly educated and live extremely successful, responsible and mature lives. That is why he is considered a legend. His appeal is THAT broad. Closed minded thinking like yours just helps prove mine and many other fans’ point that you people don’t listen and just go on what other people tell you
“Stern’s fan range from 18-65″ Says who? Stern? He has less than 2 million listeners, and if you ask a Gen Y’er who Howard Stern is, they’re more likely to tell you he was Anna Nicole Smith’s lawyer than a shock jock. The great, great, great majority of his fans are like you – 40 something men who only listen to him out of habit and nostalgia. He should retire to his silly Hampton monstrosity and stop tarnishing his previous considerable accomplishments.
