You knew the Parents Television Council has had its finger on the “Send” button of this one ever since shock jock Howard Stern was rumored to be in the running to replace Piers Morgan as a judge on NBC’s summer hit America’s Got Talent. Well, the move became official this morning, and PTC president Tim Winter ripped into NBC brass for it. “The once-proud broadcast network has lost its way and has made it clear it holds no concern whatsoever for children and families,” he said “It also risks losing millions in advertising dollars.” It will be interesting to see how network execs and advertisers deal with Stern, who moved to satellite radio to get away from the constraints he’ll certainly find on broadcast television. And how long before Stern says something he shouldn’t and NBC releases its own statement about how shocked they are that he would say something like that? Doesn’t his hire suggest that is NBC’s expectation? Stay tuned.

Howard Stern is a smart, media savvy individual who has risen to the top of whatever field he’s tried his hand at. He isn’t going to say anything to upset the PTC, plus he understands the way shows like AGT work. I think he’ll be a fine judge.
I listen to Howard and despite his outrageous tone (which is hilarious) he seems like a very decent guy. He didn’t cheat on his first wife, he cares about his daughters, he loves his current wife. He recently shot a calendar to raise money for the North Shore Animal League. There is nothing in his personal life that the PTC could object to.
Can you blame them? Howard Stern is a woman-degrading dirt bag. He looks like he needs a bath. He;s a filthy human being. NBC should be ashamed of itself.
You should be ashamed of yourself. You’re probably one of those people who think that if your children hear one bad word or have one bad influence they will turn out to be drug addicted bums. How about being a strong role model yourself and your kids will be fine. Parents are the number one influence in their children’s lives. If you try to shelter your kids from the realities of the world they will grow up ignorant to the ways of the world and anxiety filled…just like I am.
You’re missing the point. Howard Stern has a reputation for being a scumbag. I still remember what he said after the Columbine shootings and Selena’s death.
The day before Selena’s funeral, Stern said in a fake Latino voice, “Spanish people have the worst taste in music… they have no depth” and he also played gunshots over her music.
The day after the Columbine massacre, Stern said, “There were some really good-looking girls running with their hands over their heads. Did those kids try to have sex with any of those good-looking girls? They didn’t even do that? At least if you’re going to kill yourself and kill the kids, why wouldn’t you have some sex? If I was going to kill some people, I’d take them out with sex.”
Stern is a total jerk. Mocking people who were brutally murdered is not funny. These aren’t isolated incidents. He acts this all the time.
You do realize that you, as a parent, are the strongest influence in your child’s life, right? Not some judge on a summer talent reality show. I’m sure you’re one of those parents who will try to shield your kids from everything that you don’t approve of in the world. Keep it up, my parents were the same way. Then they’ll get to high school and hopefully college. They’ll realize that the world isn’t the way mommy said it would be and they’ll most likely start using drugs due to the high level of anxiety you have instilled in them. Keep up the good work.
Stop hating
Howard Stern is a filthy mouth dirt bag and I along with approx. 12 of my friends and family will not watch AGT. We have always been fans but not now.
Zzzzz……
1,800 followers on Twitter.
Fewer people in the actual “organization.”
They are doing cartwheels at being able to use his name in their fundraising from nitwits.
If Twitter numbers are considered genuine measurement of popularity, than the inmates are truly running the asylum.
Where did you get that number from, did you serioulsy just make that up?
I see 895,741 twitter followers for Howard Stern as of right now.

And NBC knows exactly what it’s doing. The greater the controversy, the more viewers to an otherwise hackneyed show premise.
Pretty much. I’ll never watch this crap show but I love that the PTC is pissed.
This group is such a sham. Much of what they do is simply find things to complain about and generate fake outrage. Their actual membership is a tiny fraction of what they claim and they use disingenuous methods to exaggerate their numbers. True outrage ought to be focused on the stupid things that go on in the name of ‘family’ entertainment including mass marketing of sugary foods to kids, violent programming that many young children do not understand and unrealistic body image perceptions that start at far too young an age. Fabricating your outrage (in particular, these groups further destabilize any integrity they might have by being blindly partisan) only dilutes the areas where appropriate outrage might be useful and salient.
If you mean that these folks stick their head in the sand and pretend that this sick, repulsive individual is an asset to the human race you are sadly mistaken. I, as an individual, will not tune in to N B C for any programing ever.
Nor will I. Howard Stern is a fucking disgrace to humanity.
You guys are TRULY ignorant and I really HATE ignorant people. If you bother to broaden your horizon a bit by reading more whether it’s about politics, the world, other individuals, you will find out that Howard Stern is a sweet, honest, harmful man. Just listen to his show more, see where he comes from before you judge. Learn about both sides of the argument before you unleash stupidity.
You MUST be joking, or just plain stupid. Howard Stern is a degenerate. He is disgusting, degrades women, and is a major a-hole. If you’re a Stern groupie so be it, but by calling him “sweet,” you expose yourself as idiotic.
Those who aggressively swear among total strangers are a disgrace to humanity. your move, Josellp.
Not even Sunday night football?
What a slap in the face to Jay Leno – for NBC to hire his arch nemesis, Howard Stern. Is there any doubt, knowing what we do about Jay, that Leno went to NBC brass and lobbied heavily against Howard?
Imagine after an excruciatingly lame act on AGT when stern says “I haven’t seen that much talent since I watched Leno’s monologue.” Me thinks the handwriting is on the wall, and NBC is finally looking to dump Leno.
As for the Parents Advisory Council, they got a point. And I expect advertisers to flee in droves once stern gets rolling. This will be a train wreck that’s for sure.
ANYTHING that pisses off the PTC is a good thing and I support 100%
Why is that? You hate them why? What do you have against a family group that you have no knowledge of other than they prefer family entertainment?
They’re not consistent. They don’t really care about families. If they did, they’d take on the unnecessary and immoral advertising that sells shit directly to children– from crappy, sugary food to violent toys and shows. What they really are all about is keeping up the culture wars; that’s not the same as informing and protecting families.
Correct Cookmeyer. Don’t forget that the biggest thing the PTC does is COLLECT DONATIONS. It’s a great way to stay in business. And business is down since Stern went to satellite. They’ve been waiting for this for a LOOOONG time. Kennety, the PTC is nothing but a shakedown organization. If you like family programming, a) Americas Got Talent will still be fine for families. Stern won’t be dropping F-bombs and he won’t be bringing in lesbian strippers to the show, and b) if you don’t like something you hear or see on tv or radio, there is a knob on either that allows you to change the station. You don’t need to fund a shakedown organization to do that.
Researcher: The average radio listener listens for eighteen minutes a day. The average Howard Stern fan listens for – are you ready for this? – an hour and twenty minutes.
Pig Vomit: How could this be?
Researcher: Answer most commonly given: “I want to see what he’ll say next.”
Pig Vomit: All right, fine. But what about the people who hate Stern?
Researcher: Good point. The average Stern hater listens for two and a half hours a day.
Pig Vomit: But… if they hate him, why do they listen?
Researcher: Most common answer: “I want to see what he’ll say next.”
Glad you posted that word for word because it is exactly what I thought when I read this lol
Its not like he’ll be bringing porn stars on the show. The real question is will he find any acts he likes!
I find absolutely nothing wrong with Howard on AGT. If anything, it will help the show’s ratings and I’m assuming that’s the reason why NBC hired Stern. For all you PTA members, stop screaming, and attracting attention to these types of things. Instead, why don’t you raise your children on your own and stop blaming the media because your kid is smoking pot.
I am a parent and my kid will grow up the way I teach them to. Not because of what they see on TV. Imagine if every parent will raise their children the proper way, teach them morals, right from wrong and love and respect them, we would have a totally different society.
I don’t care much for the guy either but we got to stop kooks like the PTC from telling us what we can or can’t watch or who we can or can’t have on TV. ENOUGH!
Exaggerate much? There’s enough filth on TV for you, can’t some people request shows they can watch without having to “explain” adult things to kids? Go watch Adult Swim and let there be options for others who do not want to watch a filthy bastard like Howard Stern on their TV sets.
If you don’t like him, if you consider him a “filthy bastard” as you say, then don’t watch, don’t let your kids watch. It’s that simple. We can all decide what we want to watch for ourselves, can’t we? If the general viewing public feels as you do, then the ratings will be poor. If they think he’s entertaining, then the ratings will be good. I think what probably makes you so upset about this is that you know it will be a success.
If you can spew on how great he is, I can spew about how much I think he’s a filthy bastard. Everyone has their own opinion, understand how it works now?
Opinions are like….never mind. Listen ReBec, why don’t you try watching the show with him on it and judge for yourself whether he’s this monster you think he is. I can tell you don’t know the show based on your uninformed opinion of him. Do you have the same opinion of Sharon Osbourne? (who’s mouth is just as filthy)
Are we sure that NBC, CBS, ABC and the PTC don’t all share the same board? Seems like there is a correlation between ptc complaints and ratings boosts
Can’t wait for Howie on AGT. This is the first reality competition that I will be sure to tune in for.
Although Howard does look like a raving lunatic in that photo.
That’s interesting, for at least one hour a week the PTC members are going to watch a TV show… good for their kids at least, it means one less hour a week they’re being molested.
I think he was talking about the waste of air company PTC.
The PTC isn’t what we should be concerned about.
It should be Bane.
They’re putting him there to tear into the really bad acts like a monkey into a cupcake, NBC will sell their souls to get out of the rut they’re in. Stern is an aging shock jock, he can’t sing or dance, all he knows how to do is ask naked women stupid qestions and throw insults around. It’ll take years for NBC to fix the mess they’re in and Stern looks like an old woman in a fright wig.
Fact is:many people (including myself)absolutely love Howard Stern. There will definitely be a big ratings uptick at first-as Howard’s fans tune in to see him-what will be interesting is seeing if the ratings remain higher in the long-run. As someone expressed earlier: some people judge Howard without actually listening to his show-basing their opinions of him on heresay from others. Personally, I remember some of his funniest bits on terrestial radio not revolving around race ,or,sex. Think what you will of Howard-the man is extremely talented-he is the very best what he does.Like someone mentioned-if you don’t like his show:DON’T LISTEN. Absolutely noone forces anyone to listen to Howard Stern! As far as indecent goes, trust me-there is far worse stuff that is allowed on network tv these days:for example: “2 broke girls”, “2&1/2 men”-nuff said! The difference between Howard Stern & others is:HOWARD IS ACTUALLY FUNNY!!! There are times I’ve listened to his show & something he said caused me to laugh without restraint-&-I mean gut-busting laughter which I could not physically control myself. Howard draws you in-he creates an environment that makes you feel as if you are right there in the studio with him.Part of his show I enjoy the most? When he comments on the news-his comments(whether it’s an act,or,how he truly feels) are absolutely hysterical! One more thing:if the P.T.C. wants to protest something-protest nbc’s horrible “programs”which have made them a joke of a network which languishes in last-place. Typical Nbc:will have a show people will actually wanna watch-because of Howard, but, will probably eventually remove it because of the P.T.C. Being Nbc-it figures. Thank you.
I was never a fan of Howard’s radio show, not because it outraged me, but because it kinda bored me. (Sorry, Howard.) Then I ended up working very closely with him on a TV project for several months. I found him to be a kind, thoughtful, super-smart, family-oriented guy. (Sorry, Howard.) He’s also an incredibly savvy entertainer who knows his audience and what they like. I’m sure he’s going into this new venture with a very clear idea of who the AGT audience is and what will work for them. There were many times when I was working with him that I’d look back at the end of a day wrangling with network execs, agents, and managers and think: “Howard Stern was the sanest person I’ve talked to all day.”
You’d think the PTC was protesting Stern being on Sesame Street or something. I wouldn’t consider this crapfest good family viewing with or without him. What these right-wing, evangelical nuts really need to do is just create their own programming on their own little network; better yet, go live on their own little island and leave the rest of us alone. They’re hypocrites, and don’t really care about families at all. They care about their own narrow worldview, where violence and consumerism is perfectly moral, but anything sexual is an abomination, and they want to bully everyone else into having to adopt it.
Stern doesn’t need the money — so why climb into the crass commercial gutter that has become NBC? This is one of the worst shows on TV, and Stern who actually has some wit under his smut veneer, just lowered his brand big time. Stern to replace Larry King on CNN would have actually made sense for Stern’s gifts. Instead, empty suit Piers Morgan jumps from this awful show to CNN.
I disagree. He wants the job, and he’s a fan of the show. This will be his last conquest of media — prime time network television. He will gather a whole new base of fans.
I love protesters that have nothing to do but beat the same dead horse. They’ve been flogging Stern for years. Move on. Do they actually listen to him? It’s not that controversial.
I hear AC/DC is coming out with an album soon. They should start protesting that too.
I strongly dislike Howard Stern, so it’s a good thing that I feel the same way about America’s got talent. Stern and the show can taint each other out of my sight.
Remember that this is the same Parent Trash Cult that had to pay Vince McMahon and WWE $3.5 million and publicly apologize to McMahon to settle a $30 million defamation lawsuit for lying about WWE programming.
I think the Parent Trash Cult will be sadly disappointed when Stern comes off as tame on the 1st show he’s on.
The PTC should focus on other things like raising their own children and getting a life.
Is Howard Stern garbage? Yes, but to give this hate group publicity is just as trashy.
My thinking is this: Howard Stern beat every other disc jockey he went against. I grew up in South Jersey and listened to him daily. I remember when John Dabella(sp?) had a real breakdown on the radio live when Stern had the djs ex-wife on air. He may be crude, sexist or whatever words you would use to describe him, however, he is where he is, making 80 million a year by having talent and by giving a vast majority of people what they want. He is no different than any other performer. I likened it to pro wrestling. Millions of people go to events, buy tee shirts, pay per views, etc. to see a soap opera about steroids up men in flashy tights. It’s all about what stimulates you. As a parent and a person who has a Masters Degree and works with children, I can firmly say Stern is the least of our worries on TV.
