BREAKING … ICM president Chris Silbermann and ICM Chief Business Development Officer & General Counsel Rick Levy took the red-eye from LA last night and arrived in New York this morning to confront the agency’s investor Suhail Rizvi and demand a management buyout as soon as possible. The pair’s goal is to eliminate the tenpercentery of majority shareholder Rizvi Traverse Management. This follows a 13-day-old demand by Silbermann and Levy to Rizvi to allow the management buyout. At that time, Rizvi said he would make a decision by Christmas. But that was not soon enough for Silbermann and Levy, who today tried to force Rizvi to make his decision sooner. Rizvi told the pair that he would have an answer for them Friday. Also Friday, Silbermann and Levy have demanded an ICM board meeting so they can present the management buyout proposal. At this point, however, sources tell me that the pair have not submitted a written proposal in advance to the board. Whether they can present a cohesive written proposal by Friday remains to be seen. Both Silbermann and Levy are on their way back from New York to LA tonight.
But what is really startling about ICM’s Silbermann right now is that he has involved none other than Michael Ovitz in his plans to take control of the agency. When I first heard about this several months ago, I asked Silbermann and Ovitz separately if they were speaking, planning, or at all involved together in ICM activities. Both Silbermann and Ovitz privately denied it. But I can confirm that Silbermann has been talking almost daily to Ovitz about the management buyout plan, as often as four times a day recently. My sources have seen the phone logs. Insiders tell me that Silbermann went to Ovitz for help in obtaining the necessary financial backing to accomplish the management buyout. I’m told that Ovitz is not interested in putting his own money into the agency at this point, but has been trying to introduce Silbermann to various financial backers. The fact that Silbermann has asked for and is receiving Ovitz’s advice and help in this ICM matter will become a hot-button issue not just inside ICM but around Hollywood in general. Ovitz remains one of Hollywood’s most controversial and disliked business personalities ever to achieve success in this town. His reputation was further tarnished recently when he made a move on giant sports and fashion management and production firm IMG when its owner and Ovitz’s longtime pal Teddy Forstmann was in the final stages of dying from brain cancer. (See Michael Ovitz And IMG World And Teddy Forstmann’s Brain Cancer: The Real Story, And Also What Ovitz Told Me About It.) Ovitz’s maneuvering as a member of IMG’s advisory board after he was placed on it by Forstmann attempted to dislodge Teddy’s hand-picked successor from running the company. After his maneuvering was discovered and publicized, Ovitz was his hand-picked successor. Hollywood responded with outrage to news of Ovitz’s maneuvering.
He was kicked off the board, shortly after, Forstmann died.
There’s every reason to believe that Hollywood will be equally outraged that Silbermann is involving Ovitz in the ICM implosion. This is especially the case because for decades Ovitz was a key competitor to ICM chairman and CEO Jeff Berg, whom Silbermann wants to remove from controlling the agency. Berg in turn has been battling back. The infighting has torn apart ICM internally to the point where agents are being forced to choose sides between the two men. (continued Friday morning because of site technical problems)

Can’t help looking at the Andy Serkis/”Caesar” awards ad on this same page, and reading about Chris Silbermann and Mike Ovitz, and making smug little comments in my head about the monkey and the actor behind the monkey. Hollywood is so much fun.
JT, that’s the smartest goddam thing I’ve read in these comments ever.
Ovitz will end up back on top running ICM with Silberman. They will change the name. Ovitz will becoming the greatest business comeback story in modern business. He will compete with CAA. CAA will begin to implode when Ovitz starts picking key players with deals they cannot refuse. In the end Ovitz will own Hollywoods biggest and most powerful agency.
Watch.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RIGHT!
who wrote this? Mike Ovitz? don’t you have a sushi restaurant to run? seriously, you were a successful agent/leader at one time, then you went nuts. I just saw him on bedford drive a few days ago pacing up and down the street like a madman in sweatpants. LEARN TO BOW OUT WITH CLASS LIKE BILL HABER.
Love this
Ya know Hollywood suits have always amazed me. Most of them are raised in these posh families in the suburbs, then they go off to college, then they get these hectic jobs as assistants and grind away for next to no pay until they land their big job opportunity…then once they put on a suit, they become gangsters…these men who have never been in an actual physical fight in their entire lives are now hard as nails, ruthless, schemers who secretly use most of their investors $$ tryin to buy luxury cars, mansions, condos, fly privately AND destroy the competition. The major question i like to ask is WHY? Like what is the reason for all of this senseless drama? I mean yea it was fun to see Ari Gold go thru it the second season of Entourage but in real life, peoples lives and families are destroyed because these rich old white men dont have the guts to just duke it out like real men and get it over with. They need to charter jets, hold secret meetings, bring in investors from India and Russia and whatnot…its kinda sad and comical. All the while, NO GOOD movies are coming out, NO GOOD movie stars are being introduced. UGH!!!
You are my new hero.
“Here`s”…Try to stay in one parking lot. It`ll be tough at 1st but gets easier.
right on pal. that is the most accurate depiction of the zoo characters on the loose in the industry.
Came to Hollywood from Boston with stars in my eyes. Got a job at a big management/production company, moved quick to assistant for a production exec, one of those wanna-be types — he loved that I was so “street”. Until the day he threw his dirty laundry bag at my head when I wasn’t looking. He laughed until I went into his office, closed the door and told him: If you ever throw anything at me again I will beat the fucking shit out of you. He started to stammer that I was fired until I suggested to him that there was no reason then for me not to pummel him then and there. When he brought up jail, I laughed. “And?” Turned my back, went back to answering his phone and he didn’t say shit. Kept my job another three months then went back to Dorchester. He’s a divorced, ex-studio exec. I’m selling hockey equipment, two kids and a wife. We both win.
Why?
Because Wendy Wasserman thought they were too ugly to date in 8th grade.
So they harbor a complex their entire lives.
So Chris talks to Ovitz on the phone a couple of times and suddenly he’s going to take over ICM? Please.
All the people jumping to conclusions are clearly not in the Business.
I’m an agent. I didn’t grow up in a Posh family. I’ve been in plenty of brawls with stitches to prove it, but you know what, when you turn 18 you stop acting like an idiot and realize there are other ways to resolve disputes without throwing punches. Also, I wouldn’t want to get your blood on my Armani. So, Mr. HereswhatIthink, I think you should grow up and get a real job rather than working at a silverlake coffee shop with your skinny jeans and hipster tattoos and stop waiting for your dreams to come true and blaming agents all along the way for your failures.
So the more sophisticated way to resolve disputes when you’re a hollywood executive/agent is to involve lawyers and conspire to destroy your enemies livelihoods and reputation so that they are laughed out of Hollywood. I guess this is how millionaires bully each other huh. Its just as low and gutter as actually throwing punches.
BTW…I dont work at a coffeeshop, ive driven through silverlake twice only to get to Glendale, i dont have tattoos, i dont wear skinny jeans because im 6’4, 245 lbs of muscle and couldnt fit one leg into an entire pair of skinny jeans. Im not a hipster, im not a dreamer and i damn sure could care less about having an agent.
And now i see why youve been in so many brawls which required so many stitches because you obviously got a lot of mouth and cant back it up.
Ever heard of Darren Statt? I’d put money on him beating you to a pulp.
Oh really…never heard of him but maybe we trained together at Muay Thai Academy in noho. And why exactly would Darren beat me to a pulp? I dont know him, i dont start fights and i would never give a reason for him or anybody else to wanna beat me to a pulp.
You missed the entire point of my comment. But its cool. Tell u what tho, one day i may run into him over at CAA (i looked him up)…and when he says to me, “damn man, how much do u bench?”…which is something all the westside suits love to ask my 6’4 245 lbs ass, right before they start discreetly hittin on me…ill say to him, “hey u kno, sum guy on deadline a little while back said he’d bet money that youd beat me to a pulp.” Then he’ll laugh, and i’ll laugh…we’ll both laugh at ur idiotic comment.
Statt is a weak punk..Do you even work in the business or do you park fucking cars? idiot.
I have to say, I much as I hate the idea, the ONLY reason Ovitz is talking to Silberman is to try and push him out of the way and take over. The ONLY reason.
He doesn’t know how to operate in any other capacity. So fascinating to watch. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
That would be exciting to see…rabid pit bulls tearing and clawing at each other. Wow!
I heard Michael Vick is organizing a fight behind Greenblatts for Friday night.
Shut up, Mike.
You think being a snake equals being a success?
It didn’t work w/ Teddy & it’s not going to work w/ Chris.
Hmm. Very interesting point. I wouldn’t mind seeing a shake up like that.
Ovitz will be indited for his part in the Pellicano case.
just wait and see…Thanks NF for telling it like it is regarding Teddy,
Ovitz is done.
Let the games begin!
Ovitz returns to agenting, poke me when John Lesher signs up.
ovitz has no clout with the studios anymore. hes a figure head that will get eaten and will make a huge chip to go away again
I hope Ovitz takes over. Hollywood LOVES a comeback!!!! Personally, I’m all for it!
Wow, what a horrid play by Silbermann. Its over. The REAL powers that be in this town will never let Ovitz rear his ugly, backstabbing douchebag head again. After his last episode with Teddy…just awful. Chris, you are one of the good ones, but, boy oh boy did you screw the pooch on this one…
He certainly did. Chris had/has a good rep but he made a massive tactical error in lining up with Ovitz. Ovitz was a d-bag even before he tried to steal IMG out from under a dying man. No one with real power in this own will go near Ovitz and Chris should sever all ties and do it quickly and quietly.
I thought Chris was smarter than this…….Wow. So sad to think a good one like Chris has drunk the cool aide now…..
The “greatest business comeback in Hollywood history”…..thanks for your insight Mrs Ovitz
i believe mrs. ovitz would be on jeff’s side.
This is disgusting behavior. I feel for the agents in that building that have families to support.
Wait, agents have families?
Um…Unless I’m missing something, if Ovitz did come back with ICM, wouldn’t that pretty much take Disney out of play for ALL OF ICM’S clients? Can you really see Disney helping Mike in any way?
Who’s actually left at Disney from the Ovitz days to put such a foot down?
These comments show just how far out of the loop the people who read this sight are… Ovitz still has clout, enormous clout — just watch how this unfolds… he’s a marathoner, not a sprinter… Just watch.
Thanks Mike, enjoy your loop.
Mike Ovitz has clout? I think a manager of development at NBC has more clout than Ovitz, buddy…
just reading rick levy’s name makes me laugh.
Was he Silbermann’s carry-on luggage on the redeye last night?
CAN SOMEONE GET JOE ESZTERHAS TO COMMENT ON MIKE OVITZ NEW BEHAVIOR? I think he might have a few interesting things to say.
As long as things get shaken up a bit, I’m all for it.
at this point, i wouldn’t trust silbermann to make a cup of coffee.
It seems that Ovitz is much better at making other people’s deals than his own. He may have gotten filthy rich off Diz but he never had a corp. job again. He bungled his own Universal deal (hello Ron M.). Handled AMG so “well” that he had to sell to Kwatinetz (another red-banner guy) for a pittance. And IMG? Don’t even get me started! And when he opens his mouth publicly lots of weird dirt comes flyng out. That being said, I would like everyone in this town – actors, directors, producers and yes, studios, to tally up how much they made because of the rise and advent of CAA. Anyone want to say Billions?
Yes, if it wasn’t for CAA those people never would have their talent!!! CAA! CAA! CAA! Those people created the entertainment business!!!!
Thank you all for your responses. I am connected at the top. Ovitz has list no power at all. This business will be mesmerized by him again. We live great comebacks. Now he has his own money. He will become the owner of the gargantuan agency formally know as ICM.
Trust me.
Anonymous, your disingenuous posts are now getting wearisome. You know it. I know it. We all know it. But I don’t expect you to stop.
GAY MAFIA …TRANSFORM!!! VEEP-VOOP-DOOP-DEEP-DOP!!
Get in the business u idiots! you people know nothing about hollywood, stop reading this site from minnesota u dumb —–s!!
Relax and get your boss her latte.
Anyone who cannot afford to spend time to type “y-o-u” perhaps should get in the business of taking a refresher course in English.
Let’s all take a deep breath and step away from the Blackberry…
I feel bad for the tv lit guys. Pete stone, Marc Gordon are all great agents! They should all go form broder 2.0. The town needs it. Then they should try and hire jack leighton.
Silbermann just asked the Scorpion to help him across the river!
“I promise I won’t sting you! I promise!” — Hope he’s wearing his water wings, he’s gonna need’em!
Didn’t Ovitz run his own businesses into the ground after CAA? Why would anyone ask his advice unless they’re desperate and what kind of money are they going after?
Big balls big play Chris… i knew ye when! I wish you were going in to battle with someone who has more muscle than Rick Levy, but I like the fact that you know the time is now to become a legendary playah. Question is, do you have the class to fight for real because it’s going to get nasty before you know it. Beware of the man who lived by the rule of keeping your friends close, but your enemies closer. He will raise that gnarly head of his and you’ll be faced with the choice of a lifetime…
LMAO @ you losers thinking you know about Hollywood. Deadline comments always make me laugh
What’s more comical is when these Hollywood “big shots” think they know about private equity financing and that the sort of “presentation” that would fly in the industry will get laughed out of the conference room when dealing with guys like Rizvi.
