Today we stumbled upon this Japanese-subtitled/voiceover trailer for Andrew Stanton’s John Carter. It reveals a little more of Disney’s upcoming movie based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of Barsoom (Mars) stories. The first was published almost 100 years ago. Many sequels followed. To today’s readers the author’s voice may seem quaint, archaic. Cultural and stylistic shortcomings aside, Burroughs’ storytelling is surprisingly compelling. Some commenters have dismissed what they’ve seen in previous trailers as derivative or outright ripoffs of dozens of other movies. Burroughs’ writing suggests the reverse. Mars has been a problematic movie subect for Disney and others but Pixar veteran Stanton is no slouch and his name alone will lure some fans to theaters to see his labor of love for themselves. John Carter opens domestically March 9.

Very nice. Cannot wait to see this film!
Thank God Jerry BruckHAMMER has nothing to do with this!!!!
in fact, let me add some more !!!!!!!
!!
so much better than the earlier trailers
I agree….much better….I wonder if they have two separate trailer houses cutting these?
Anyone know?
It’s not what Burroughs wrote that matters, it’s what Disney brings to the screen. How many people have read even one of the Barsoom stories? I admit, I haven’t. Not that Hollywood is known for always going by the book anyway. The Witches of Eastwick springs to my mind here: the novel and film are two very different and separate beasts. Maybe the previous trailers do accurately reproduce the source material, but they still look derivative or outright ripoffs of dozens of other movies all the same. In which case Burroughs was definitely ahead of his time.
Burroughs was absolutely ahead of his time. Read his work and realize he wrote these stories ONE HUNDRED YEARS ago. Every space epic you’ve ever seen was influenced by these books. And they still hold up as terrific reading with a great heroic lead character when they’re read today.
what’s the audience for this film?
Stanton is terrific, and I am sure he has done a good job with John Carter and Burroughs. The problem is that this material looks tired, or maybe I am just tired of it….been there…done that… too many times.
However, it can do Thor, Clash of the Titans and other similar films global box office as it should satisfy that significant audience.
The more they show, the worse it becomes. And Burroughs was a really bad “writer.”
Wow. I’m pretty sure you’re just looking for a reaction.
And you are definitely a plant.
bad “writer” — Oh, screw that! He was a pulp writer without the quotes and like all pulp writers his output was wildly up and down. Many of the Tarzan stories were very good, even great, as entertainment. Some of the At The Earth’s Core stories were very good. But the Mars stories were uniformly his worse writing. I struggled to get through any of the Mars stories and I like him. If they had a big budget, they should have done the Earth’s Core stories and spent their money on the getting the up-turned horizon.
Really? Of the two or three trailers/Ads out there this is easily the best. Frames the movie in a way I can take seriously now.
Stanton will deliver. Just watch…
Have really enjoyed all I’ve seen of this movie. Looking forward to it next year
“Why” did “Scott” put “writer” in air quotes? I think WSB has arrived on the runway of writer with a safe landing with or without air quotes.
Saw the trailer this weekend on Sherlock. Looks pretty rad
hated the first trailer , but this one looks good.
Cant wait for this one. DOnt think weve had a soaring adventure like this in theaters in a long time!
Liked the US trailer better – but this one definitely shows more story. good stuff
This has great potential. Unlike other sci-fi fandoms, there isn’t a devout fan base, just a lengthy familiarity with the various works from Buroughs. People recognize Tarzan, but as a franchise it’s extremely dated with poor performances for all of the post 1950′s works.
The “..of Mars” series is different in that it hasn’t been exploited or watered down by previous attempts.
I was exposed to the works of ERB in the late seventies. Finding the various books was difficult even then, ultimately reading most of them through friends or finding collections at swap meets.
If Pixar and Stanton can bring this story to modern audiences in a compelling way, they may have a massive hit on their hands (the lack of bare chested women not withstanding).
Unfortunately, this may suffer the same domestic box office fate as Prince of Persia and for the same reason: bad casting. The lead in this film basically looks like Jake Gyllenhaal’s character in Prince of Persia. While certainly handsome, that pretty boy look is a turn off to many male movie-goers. This film will struggle to break $100 million in North America, but make up some ground overseas.
Can’t believe the got bananrama to score the entire thing! Gonna be amazing!
Cowboys & Aliens Pt. 2
So few comments, and this article’s been here all through the holiday. Tells you something about the level of excitement. And Lynn Collins’s fake British accent isn’t doing much for me either. She’s sure been around awhile, has gotten some mileage out of the sexpot thing, still no real proof that she can act. Kind of tiresome.
I grew up on the old Gil Kane “Warlord of Mars” Marvel version in the 70s, so that’s what I see when somebody talks about John Carter. Looks good enough but will do “Prince of Persia” biz. The star seems to be another Hollywood manufactured product they’re trying to make happen, a male Blake Lively. Just because he was on a TV show and had a bit part in Wolverine, he’s a headliner? 3D will add nothing.
