The former CBS News producer who tried to blackmail David Letterman for $2 million has joined the staff of Investigation Discovery’s On the Case with Paula Zahn, TVNewser reported today. Joe Halderman, who was a producer for 48 Hours Mystery, joined the crime documentary show On the Case as a producer a few weeks ago. Exec producer Scott Weinberger cited “Halderman’s professional accomplishments as an Emmy award-winning producer for 48 Hours and CBS News” in a statement, adding that ”we are confident that Halderman will make significant contributions to the success of our award-winning investigative newsmagazine.” Halderman is not expected to work in the field. Halderman pleaded guilty in 2010 to the attempted extortion which backfired with Letterman himself revealed the embarrassing details about his personal life on his CBS Late Show. Letterman admitted to sleeping with members of his staff including a woman Halderman had been dating. Halderman was released from prison in September 2010.

WTF, over?
Really? As Seth Meyers would say “Really”??
With all the people out of work Joe Halderman was at the very top of the list? Let’s get real here and say one has to ask exactly what does he have on the upper echelon there?
Joe is good at what he does. VERY good. (And he has something to prove). It’s a smart hire.
“Joe is good at what he does.”
And what’s that, blackmail? No, I think he screwed that up royally.
One thing comes to mind that he’s not very good at.
Wow, this is great news. Thinking for their first story they should do a piece on that guy who blackmailed Letterman…Oh, shit wait…
Exclusive interview!
She probably put a no-blackmail clause in his contract.
So there are NO qualified candidates who – I don’t know – DIDN’T attempt to blackmail someone?
Oh yeah. With our country’s massive over-employment problem….
Right now it seems like a “Headline” story but I wonder how long it’ll take until those being featured refuse to take part.
Yes, yes… of course… hire a convicted blackmailer for an investigative newsmagazine show. What possible harm could it do for the show’s credibility. amazing decision.
I agree with nyguy… Halderman must have some real dirt on the producers.
I am thrilled. I hope this news brought Letterman great discomfort.
Wow, are you next in line to blackmail Letterman or something? Nice restrained anger there.
Seriously though, what the hell are they thinking? How does this in any way become a positive for CBS? It ruins the show’s credibility and has to surprise and frustrate Letterman that CBS let this convicted felon back into the the fold. Tell me the upside of this?
No explanation necessary other than the fact that I can’t stand the mother f…r.
Letterman is proably thinking: Oh great, they’re grooming that guy to be my replacement!
What a great idea for a realty show! Take a guy who is a convicted blackmailer, and have him try to blackmail someone every week! TV gold – wish I had thought of it. Paula Zahn is back in the game! What? That’s not what the show is about? I don’t get it – then why did they give him a job?
Pretty good publicity stunt. I have never heard of this show nor did I know that Paula Zahn was back on TV.
It would be a better publicity stunt, if it were interesting enough to compel me to watch the show.
I think its great an ex-con got a break.
of course, if he was black he’d be lucky if he got a janitorial gig.
The man made a big mistake and he paid for it. I am all for a second chance.
Halderman is good at what he does in terms of being a producer for news magazines.
Good for him that he found work and good for Paula Zahn and her team for having faith in Halderman’s work abilities.
“Look, your resume is impressive, no question, but we’re really looking for someone with more jail experience.”
“Well, the job description did say that we were looking for someone who had murdered their ex wife and her lover, but hey you know Excel, so you’re hired!”
This is sick and borderline insane.
Here is why?
This man is unstable. And he is back in the business that contributed to his instability. Like putting a bookie back in the gaming world. WTF happens when he goes ballistic and shoots everyone in the office? Did we not see this coming? This is a man who did something so dramatic with Letterman that pushing the limits during his breakdowns, is now comfortable to him. Let him find a job. But not in entertainment. There are no other capable people available to do this? Joe is that portabt to this show? Like Spielberg to a movie. Give me a fucking break. Real dumb.
Tell Scott Sternberg to go blackmail himself. First poducing Casey Anthony’s life story and now this. What’s next? A reality TV show for Adolf Hitler?
the dude is a hack. between this and casey anthony???!!
Amen…
Discovery Channel decided to flush any integrity they had down the drain for this guy?
Wow!
My guess is a friend or former co-worker was involved in the hiring.
Only in Hollywood is the good life possible after prison!
Holy hell! Next thing you know, they’ll be forgiving Mel Gibson!
C’mon y’all. It’s nauseating, sure. But surprising? Really? In a business notorious these days for people failing upward and/or for being the object of a post-scandal bidding war? Black is white and white is black ’round these parts. You know that. Or was I the only one who saw Charlie Sheen flip an anti-Semetic bird to the entire TV industry earlier in the year and then receive an invite to go onstage at the Emmys — where he presented the Best Actor award to a Chuck Lorre employee?! (Halderman’s hire and Sheen’s re-emergence ain’t that far apart.) The only thing that stands out about this announcement is the actual smartness of burying it on the Thursday of Christmas week.
He’ll be back on MEN by September if not before. Guaranteed.
Hi,
So let me understand many of the commentators above:
Once you’ve pleaded guilty, and been punished for your crime, and in anon-violent, non-recidivistic crime, you should still forever continue to suffer and be punished?
And they say Hollywood/Media is liberal; Ha!
Kind regards,
Shakir Razak
He shouldn’t be forced to suffer for a crime he already served time for, but should CBS really hire him back? If an employee stole from your store and you prosecute and jail him, is there any expectation that the employee will get his/her job back when they are released? They have served their time for society, but what about the trust they’ve broken with the employer?
CBS didn’t hire him back. Did you even read the article before commenting? He’s working for a cable channel owned by Discovery.
convicted bank robbers are not hired by Chase to work as tellers.
They should go all the way and staff up with the dirtiest of the News of the World folks. They need a second chance, too.
Joe may have made a poor decision, but at least he proved to the world what most suspected… David Letterman is a very creepy, low-life disgusting, narcissitic pos. Nothing more.
Everyone deserves a second chance. Hopefully he learnt his lesson.
yeah, now if he gets caught extorting Jay Leno, a lot of people will end up with egg on their face
Ha, how could anyone come up with dirt on Leno? Impossible.
