Kurt Sutter, the colorful and occasionally churlish creator of the FX biker smash Sons Of Anarchy that wrapped its fourth and most successful campaign last night, is optimistic that his show will see a seventh season. Or more. SOA already has been renewed for a fifth season of 13 episodes. He said during a conference call with reporters this morning: “We’re hoping to be able to tell the story we want to tell in a seven-season arc, to have the length of time to do that. At least we’re open to exploring that.” But he added that his experience as a writer/executive producer on The Shield tells him that “the above-the-line costs can become too much” when trying to go beyond season seven. The reason Sutter is even able to consider three seasons into the future is the fact SOA just enjoyed its highest-rated season, standing as the No. 2 scripted drama on basic cable (trailing only AMC’s The Walking Dead) and the highest-rated series ever on FX. He credits the show’s increasing viewership in part to its availability over Netflix. “It helped people really plug into and get into the show the first few seasons,” Sutter believes. “It’s been really important to our rise.”
Equally important, Sutter believes, has been his drama’s ability to skirt the difficult line between art and commerce. “I’m very aware that I’m writing a show for television,” he said, “so I do want to write storylines that are rich and complex and characters that are three-dimensional. We’re fortunate to have actors who weekly give tremendous performances. But there’s also an element of the show that’s incredibly pulpy and entertaining, and that’s as important as the rich, deep character stuff. I have no desire to run a show that only a couple of hundred people watch. If I wanted that kind of audience, I’d go do theater. … I’m not writing the show in a vacuum. And I’m an egomaniac. I want to be loved, honored, worshiped and adored by everyone. So I want a big audience. I love the fact we’re beating the (broadcast) networks in key demos.” Sutter credited the show’s healthy ratings to “the fact I surround myself with people who are way more talented than I am. And great actors.”
Sutter admitted that he’s considering altering the SOA pace for Season 5 so that there is perhaps a bit less tumult packed throughout each episode. “My sense for next season is that it will be a slower boil,” he said. “This season, everyone was sort of out of breath by the end of every episode, and my sense is that next season that won’t be the case.” He added that he was open to continuing to have guest stars appear on SOA who also worked with him on The Shield but was reluctant to have it extend to that show’s stars Michael Chiklis and Walton Goggins. ”I think it would be impossible for them to be perceived as somebody else in this world. It would be too distracting to bring them onto the show, as much as I love and adore them as actors and people.” And he hasn’t yet decided how Sons will wrap, noting this morning, “Whether they’ll all wind up dead in a big puddle of blood at the end has yet to be determined.”

Suddenly, the word churlish is a trending topic in google and twitter.
Put this series out of its misery. Quality-wise spoken not ratings of course
Best show on TV period…I started watching late into season 1, wasn’t sure what I’d get out of a ‘white boy biker show’, as I assumed that was all it was, and I was instantly HOOKED.
I watched the entire season 1 and 2 while in the hospital giving birth. Haven’t missed an episode since. Perfect ensemble of characters and great writing. Simply brilliant. I say 15 seasons…why not?
Is Sutter’s “slower boil” means it will be like season 3, DON’T DO IT!!! Season 3 Irish was terrible!
While I agree that it would be incredibly tough to bring in Walter Goggins (not to mention he has quite the character going on “Justified”), I disagree about Chiklis. And i think they should not try to shoehorn him into another character but bring him in as Vic Mackey. Clearly the shows share the same universe (the niners gang), so why not? Either DHS finally let him loose to do field work, or he comes in involving some new illegal side scam.
Last night’s season finale was quite possible the worst I’ve ever seen. I won’t spoil anything, but it was a total cheat. Sutter may have cost Sons a season or two. The writing on this show just flat out sucks.
Roger- you are obviously not a regular watcher. The finale last night was great. Sets up for a new chapter to begin with Tara and Jax. Could it be yu didn’t like it because nothing exploded?
I agree 100%. It was really awful. I’ve been a dedicated viewer & uber fan since episode 1 but I have lost all my love for the show and for Kurt. His rants on his blog are getting delusional and ugly and the writing on the show is getting worse and worse. The acting however, is stellar and kudos to Charlie Hunnam, Maggie Siff & Mrs Sutter for their work, but yikes, the writing is seriously awful.
Roger, I totally agree. This past season was a total letdown after the intensity and great acting of the previous season. The final ep was the embodiment of all of the lackluster writing and storylines the fans have had to endure this fall.
This show has never been good, no matter how much I wanted it to be. I tried for 3 seasons but finally just gave up. The writing is terrible. It’s just a hokey, melodramatic soap opera with bikers full of lifeless and thin characters. I would love to see this in the hands of a great writing team. The cast is solid, but a shame they have so little to work with.
Watch Breaking Bad instead. It is 1000% better.
I do already, and I love it.
That is exactly how I feel about Mad Men.
You obviously have no understanding of subtleties or you would have understood what last night was about. It wasn’t about the action, but it was probably the most intriguing and exciting episode of the show yet.
SOA jumped the shark when they went to Ireland. Haven’t been able to watch since.
1st and 2nd seasons were great. It’s a damn shame.
You should watch this season- it ill bring you back to seasons 1 & 2. My favorite since season 1.
It’s a fantastic show and this season was the best. I can’t wait for season 5.
How did they jump the shark going to Ireland? I’m not trying to down you or anything. I’m just curious as to how the entire premise of the show being based on a partnership with an Irish gun connection jumps the shark by going to Ireland.
The entire Ireland thing was completely dragged out and pulled the show to a grinding halt. The Ireland storyline went on waaaaaaaaaay too long. It was definitely the weakest of the seasons so far. Yeah, the finale was a humdinger, but that was about it.
Last night’s finale killed the show for me. I doubt I’ll be back.
The deus ex machina silliness in the season finale puts the outrageously over-hyped SOA on a par with AMC’s “The Killing”.
I agree with the whole Ireland deal. Nothing there that a phone call and fedex package couldn’t have handled. That was the only season I have not watched. Loved this season but felt somewhat cheated. So much leading up to it then fizzle; at least in my opinion. All we needed was a family dinner then a black screen and I would have had a flashback of a few years ago. Looking forward to next season for sure. Still love the show. Thanks Kurt for all your hard work.
Love love love the show! Season 3 was tough to get through, but best season finale ever, so far. I knew this years finale would be a little less fantastic, but I was satisfied. Hopefully next year we can have a little more focus, rebuilding this year was a little convoluted. I miss Tig, Happy, and Chucky’s creepy comedic additions. No matter what, bummed that I have to wait so long for next season! Great job everyone!
Love this show. Sutter, you’re a brilliant writer. Congrats on a wonderful season, I’m not sure how I’ll be able to wait another 10 months for the rest!!
This season’s finale was not BOOM BANG SMASH POW that satisfies the less discriminating that want shock and awe. This was the “thinking man/woman’s” finale! It was intense, dark, irreverent, thought provoking and provided a look into the past as well as a glimpse to the future. I have been a die hard fan since the first show and have never missed an episode (even after surgery – lol) and while the first seasons were flash and shock and OMG this season was on a full rolling boil of dark past dimensions, secrets and mayhem that was peeled back one nasty layer at a time only to bring you around to start a new beginning but at what cost to Clay, Gemma, Jax, Tera and the MC! Brilliant writing on Kurt Sutters part and stellar acting delivered in grand fashion and passion on the part of the entire cast who make all our fav residents of Charming, CA! KUDO’s Mr. Sutter! I bow to your Genius! Thank you for another season of mayhem in Charming, CA – I personally can’t wait for the next to start in the Fall!
I think you Kurt Sutter, has the VERY BEST show on TV. Don’t listen to any of the negative commits people write. The number of people that watch SOA is all the proof you need!!! The way it’s on Facebook & Twitter in so many different sites is amazing!!!! Not to mention The SOA app. & your U-tube stuff. We are the people that REALLY COUNT!!!!
YOU ROCK OUR WORLD!!!!!!
Love this show. The finale last night was curious but well done. I’d have preferred the CIA reveal to maybe have covered a couple episodes rather than open with it and be like oh ya all this drama all season was moot btw… but it was still awesome! I’d follow Kurt into battle any day.
To bad they recently sold the Fonz’s bike on eBay, as last night SOA could have used it to survive jumping the shark. Instead they fell into the tank and drowned…
I loved this show, but if you have to kill off a main character, then do it. Don’t let us guess of all the tough spots Jax will be put in when Clay plots his revenge or how do we fix the Irish. I thought SOA were a bunch of tough bastards who could work shit out??? Or that Jax was going to man up and always be honest with his lady and brothers who were smarter than most, but no he decides he can keep them in the dark and get through a CIA sponsored drug cartel?
Kind of a stretch on all fronts…
Well that was awful.
SOA? Great first two seasons. Third sucked the big one. Fourth? Ill agree the writing is letting the show down. Although the acting is top notch, the plot lines (or should that read hole?) is ruining what should have been a timeless classic in TV history. To sum up, great actors, bad script.
Outstanding season finale. Could only have been better if it were 90 minutes. SOA is one of the sharpest written shows on the air. Now please, don’t go cheap on us FX – we need 26 more episodes to bring this excellent tale of loyalty, family, guts and violence to a satisfying conclusion.
I only discovered this show recently and have been catching up via Netflix. Now that I’ve watched seasons 1 and 2 streaming, I await disc 3 in the mail like a junkie waiting for a fix.
We need shows like SONS on television as long as possible. The basic networks feed us crap for as long as they can. We need The Shield, Sons, American Horror story, The Wire, Dexter, Hung, to spare us from Dancing with the Stars, You Deserve It, and the Bachelor season 6000 (though I do love my Beverly Hills Housewives and morons from the Jersey Shore!).
Well,NBC has Smash. ABC has a dark show called The River.
To all the people who claim people didn’t like the finale because there wasn’t enough explosions and it was “thought-provoking”: get real. The finale was horrendous, essentially marginalizing everything that’s happened this season. Without spoiling, the Irish demands and the Cartel plot points were completely contrived and manipulative of the situation. This show has had two great seasons and two lackluster ones.
I totally agree and I <3 you for better writing in this post than in the entire episode I watched last night.
Really doubting the authenticity of many of the comments above. Just saying.
And you shouod !! Sutter wrote most of them. Ater SOA , he won’t have another hit anyway. A one shot wonder.
Yeah, one shot wonder. Those 7 season of “The Shield” didn’t count for anything. He was only involved in that as a executive producer / co-producer / Writer / Script Supervisor.
Nice job doing your research on that one Kaitlain.
Perhaps Son’s isn’t your thing. Go back to your Twilight Movies.
didn’t read all the comments yet, so someone else may have already said this, but…
When Juice was being released from holding in the finale, he was watching The Shield on his tv, and Chiklis was on the screen. Something tells me that would make it even more difficult to have him on the show…
That scene made me crack up
How many people do you think caught that, much less understood it? Not many, I am guessing. I did, but I was a dedicated viewer of The Shield. I think most of the SOA audience didn’t watch The Shield.
Love SOA! Have been a fan since day one! I thought the season finale show was great. My husband wanted a big banging exit but, I liked the new door that has opened for the characters. Don’t know how Jax will play this one out but the loyalty to the club and “life” always amazes me! Thank you Sutter for entertaining me these years!
The reality is that this is Kurt Sutters show. His show, his vision. Therefore, he’s not ging to sell out just to appease the, “critics.”
The writing this season was terrible. The finale was totally contrived; Sutter refuses to kill of any of his main characters and thus loses all credibility. Piney was a gimme. Great actors; terrible writing. And the Tara character gets more and more annoying and less and less believable with each episode.
“I’m a doctor but I love living a trashy lifestyle with outlaw bikers!”
Ridiculous, I agree.
Yeesh. Its a TV show. Chill. Not everything has to be prolific to be good and entertaining. If you really think its that bad go write your own show, pitch it to a studio, hire actors, direct it, edit it, re edit and submit for broadcast. Then when you have a top rated show you can make the choice to not get pissed off when some guy with a DVR rakes you over the coals because in one shot the killer is wearing a navy blue shirt but in the the other he’s wearing a baby blue shirt.
Its like Dexter, everyone says “this season sucks! I’ve lost all faith!” but two seasons from now people will say “yeah, season X was pretty good…”
I’m not sure you know what “prolific” really means.
I believe all the people saying negative things, are jealous!!!
This amazing show has more balls than anything on cable. The risks,
Mr Sutter & his writers take is invigorating. The acting superb.
Nothing like it before or in the future of cable. If you want to bitch about it don’t watch it. but let the rest enjoy it.
“Jealous” of what? LOL. Could just be the people with criticisms of S4′s finale are employing their critical thinking skills. You might want to try it some time.
The finale was the very definition of NOT taking risks. Nothing happened. Every thing they were building towards the whole damn season just fizzled out and was solved (weakly) within the first 15 minutes. Pure crap!
