EXCLUSIVE: Legendary Pictures is courting Harrison Ford to play Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey in 42, the Brian Helgeland-directed chronicle of how Rickey and Jackie Robinson eradicated segregation in baseball in 1947. Helgeland has written a script after Legendary jump-started a long dormant project in collaboration with Robinson’s widow, Rachel Robinson. The film’s being produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull with Jon Jashni and Dick Cook exec producing. The film will be released by Warner Bros.
Numerous top actors have been mentioned for the Rickey role, including Robert Redford, who was attached a decade ago when the project was first contemplated. Now, it looks like it’s Ford’s role if he wants it, and while he has been mentioned for a number of projects including Ender’s Game, here he would be playing the man who with Robinson was the catalyst for the most groundbreaking event to occur in sports in the 20th century.
It wasn’t enough to decide to break baseball’s color line; Rickey had to search for the right player and qualities that went beyond hitting, fielding, speed and a throwing arm. The first player had to be able to withstand the hostilities from bigots and segregationists not only in the stands, but in the dugouts as well. He found that player in Robinson, a star for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro Leagues who had the iron will to take the abuse without losing his composure.

Finally a project announced on Deadline that actually sounds good and worth making. It will be hilarious when this movie gets released, becomes a critical and commercial success and everyone in this business who is totally out of touch is left scratching their heads. Great project. Great idea for casting. Thanks to everyone involved for doing something worthwhile.
Could play well to Harrison’s strengths. Good material is hard to come by these days.
I’m sorry what are his strengths again? Growling and scene chewing and making a fortune for his grandkids? Screw Ford, he’s an angry old prick who doesn’t deserve the roles he’s taking from people who still love performing.
Screw you, scribe. Harrison Ford is an icon and the coolest guy in the business.
About time they made this. Can’t wait to see who’ll play Robinson.
Great project, don’t ruin it. Harrison Ford is so wooden. Get Redford and make this thing worthy of its story.
And Redford isn’t wooden? Really!
Any Hollywood male actor who is 10 + or 10- years of Daniel Day Lewis’ age really should be nervous to act..
Hopefully someone other than Jamie Foxx will play Robinson.
agree with all these postings. it’s about time. exciting to see this getting launched. this is can’t miss material.
It’ll miss if they don’t cast the Robinson role properly. They shouldn’t be afraid to find an unknown.
The same societal issues prevelant during Jackie’s day are right in our face today. The glass ceiling is still there only it’s “tinted” now with very few actors of color on the other side. Jackie had to be “brought up” to the majors but if you compare even present day Hollywood to baseball in those days they are bringing very little new talent to the majors. I’m a bit privy to the behind the scenes with this project and it leaves me vexed to find that a unknown yet highly worthy candidate to play Jackie has barely been considered. I have been following this actors http://youtu.be/zwts_afVqow career for a few years now and his talent is enormous. As a fan of the both baseball and acting I started to take notice of Stephen Hill after seeing his portrayal of Jackie Robinson in a documentary at two film festivals here in the tri-state area. The doc took home the top prize at both festivals and Hill was the only actor in it! He had Jackie’s look, his vocal pattern and his demeanor. I’m glad I keep in touch with him, if given the chance he’s going to be a big star. Just look at his work http://youtu.be/zwts_afVqow
Nice post, Trevor. I would also like to throw the name of Erwin E.A. Thomas out as a possible contender for the role of Jackie Robinson. I saw him in stage production of Steve Deitz’s “Jackie and Me” (based on the young adult novel by Dan Gutman) in Seattle and he was a dead ringer for Robinson. You should Google his name to see what I mean. I totally understand Hollywood wanting to go with known quantities such as the prodigiously talented Derek Luke, but I think Mr. THomas deserves at least a meeting and a screen test. What do you think?
Calling it now, Best Supporting Actor win for Ford and Best Actor Nomination to Derek Luke playing Jackie Robinson.
Let’s just hope they have sense enough to make this Robinson’s movie, not focus solely on Rickey, and how he “saved” Robinson by giving him the opportunity.
Harrison Ford is boring, wooden and has watched himself too much. Redford would be a much better choice.
I count myself a HUGE fan of Redford’s. As he is one of my favorite directors, producers and I love him even more for Sundance every year.
But, let’s be honest, as an actor he has been wooden for decades.
Ford is actually more exciting on the big screen – when he wants to be, of course.
Harry was great in Morning Glory. Even better than the film itself. It’s a shame that film never really took off. He could have received some accolades for that film. But, I digress.
Anyway, let’s hope the filmmakers knock one out of the park with this.
Can’t wait to see who they cast as AB “HAPPY” Chandler. Don’t forget, it was Happy who approved Jackie to play and Happy who created the player’s pension plan. Great man, Happy. One of a kind.
On location where Chadwick Bosman is working on his game for the movie. This kid will do a great job playing the part of Jackie. Harrison Ford showed today to watch a little of the Baseball action, the man is a class act.
Looks like they replaced Jon Bernthal. I was on set yesterday during what where supposed to be his scenes and he was not there. Possible he is just playing a different character I guess.
