EXCLUSIVE: Lifetime is heading back to The Blue Lagoon. The cable network has greenlighted a contemporary remake of the 1980 romance/adventure movie starring Brooke Shields, which centered on a boy and a girl marooned on a tropical island, where they grow up together, fall in love and discover sexuality. Neil Meron and Craig Zadan’s Storyline Entertainment and Judith Verno’s Peace Out Prods are producing the film in association with Sony Pictures TV, with Meron, Zadan and Verno executive producing. The project was originally set up at Lifetime in 2004 with Heather Rutman and Matt Heller as writers. Casting is already underway, with filming eyed for a February start in Puerto Rico. The Blue Lagoon movie franchise is known for giving young actresses their big break. The 1980 film made Shields a household name, while the 1991 sequel Return To The Blue Lagoon launched the career of Milla Jovovich.
The story of The Blue Lagoon, which echoes the biblical tale of Adam and Eve, originated as a novel by Henry De Vere Stacpoole. It was first made into a movie in Britain in 1949, with Jean Simmons as the young girl. This is the second high-profile contemporary movie remake in the works at Lifetime and produced by Zadan, Meron and Sony TV, along with a Steel Magnolia reboot with an all-black cast. On the series side, Zadan and Meron are executive producing Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva and NBC’s midseason musical drama Smash.

just let it go- it was God awful the first time. There doesn’t need to be a remake. The Steel Magnolias sounds interesting though. Lifetime- how about hiring writers and coming up with something fresh
Yeah, and we really need a remake of The Blue Lagoon. For some reason, I was expecting to see Zalman King’s name connected to this one.
At last, a film where Kellan Lutz can realize his full potential.
Here they go again, raping my childhood memories of a nubile, not to mention, nude Brooke Shields.
Just thought I would be helpful and finish the job. Shields had a body double for the nude scenes. You’re welcome!
Of all the movies in all the history of cinema NOT to be remade as a freakin’ TV movie, this is probably in the top five. No one gave a good holy crap about the first one except for a chance to see Shields and Atkins pretty much naked. Free cable can’t afford anyone to cast anyone that most people want to see pretty much naked so what’s the point? It’s not like people will be tuning in for the facile dialogue and compelling plot.
Could Lifetime movies get any worse???Wake up Nancy…your buying s*** and names! It’s the story, not who produces it, that’s the key to a good movie. Stop getting in bed with these so-called “movie” people.Midwest America could care less who these people are…you should do the same.
I have a better idea. Why don’t Lifetime do a remake of “Debbie Does Dallas?”
Why bother paying for the title or anything else related to the original. The story was not that unique and could easily be crafted into something viable without saddling the effort with “remake” baggage.
Graig Zadan?
Why don’t Zadan and Meron the ultimate rehashers just make this with an all black cast too.
As much as i hate to say this…Selena Gomez & Bieber fever would be purrrrfect for this project.
This could be a great idea for a remake, if its on ShowtimeAfterDark or Skinemax! And yes, Zalman King SHOULD be involved, lol! But to have this on chickflick home Lifetime? WTF? And, btw, my cable company doesnt even bring us Lifetime in HD, and we dont even get Lifetime Movie Channel! So, whats the point of this?
this would be perfect using Snookie and The Situation.
Would really strike a cord with this generation. lol
…because, the only reason this is news at all, is because it’s using the Blue Lagoon title. It’s called “pre-sold”, no matter how small. That’s how/why all these remakes are even considered.
None of you get the point. Lifetime movie ratings are all about the hot title. The actual quality of the movie is, alas, entirely beside the point. Their biggest movie this year: CRAIGSLIST KILLER. I rest my case.
Not that Craigslist Killer was a bad movie or anything. But it wasn’t about the movie. It was about instant connection via title.
This is one of those projects where people are probably anticipating the Funny or Die spoof more than the movie itself.
When was the last time Meron/Zadan had an original thought? Good grief, they keep remaking and remaking and remaking.
Hey Sparky,
What about Drop Dead Diva and Smash? Not a rip off but original shows!!! And anyway they always say there are no original ideas in Hollywood well, those shows prove that wrong.
Be modern and redo it with two boys or two girls instead.
If they do make another, they should go back to the book. The book is very good and much more sexual than the 1980s film.
Why don’t they just do a new adaptation of the book. The book is quite good.
