Two months after speculation first started making the rounds, NBC and the NFL tonight confirmed that Madonna will perform during the halftime show at Super Bowl XLVI on February 5. Madonna’s set will be created by a team from Cirque du Soleil; Madonna’s frequent collaborator, creative director/choreographer Jamie King; and multimedia artists from Moment Factory. The choice of Madonna continues a recent trend of going with older performers outside the adults 18-49 demo. Aside from The Black Eyed Peas, the list of recent Super Bowl halftime acts includes The Who, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and U2.

After Prince’s halftime show, I think maybe they should just let him do it every year.
Exactly what I was going to write. Prince did it LIVE – not lipsync’d – in the rain, in those boots of his, total confidence, it was insane.
Football itself has taken many, many hits recently. This Madonna infestation is just one of them.

She hasn’t a major hit in the US in 12 years. TWELVE. (Not counting “4 Minutes” which was only a modest hit and only because of Justin Timberlake).
The singles are what matter these days, not the album, and if you are going to cite her album sales, her last CD barely went GOLD. Not Platinum, but Gold. “Don’t Tell Me” came out in 2000. Not one song has caught on since then. All her movies have flopped. She’s washed up.
I wouldn’t describe myself as a Madonna fan, but as long as we’re looking at accomplishments:
- “Die Another Day” (2002) was a top ten single;
- “American Life” (2003) was a worldwide hit;
- “Hung Up” (2005) was her biggest worldwide hit to that date (#1 in 41 countries);
- “4 Minutes” was her 37th top-10 hit;
- She was the best-selling singles artist for the decade 2000-2010;
- Her 2006 “Confessions” tour grossed $194M and was the highest grossing tour EVER for a female artist at the time; and
- Her 2008 “Sticky & Sweet” tour grossed $408M and set the record for highest EVER grossing tour for a solo artist.
Having gone to one her shows at Staples I can tell you two things about her concerts: 1) she puts on a great performance (not quite at Gaga level, but really good nonetheless); and 2) since her fanbase is primarily gays and hetero girls, it is an awesome show to go to because picking up girls at a Madonna concert is like shooting fish in a barrel since there’s no competition from other guys.

Have to differ with u one point. Having seen Gaga’s show this past year, I think it’s the other way around: Gaga puts on a great performance (not on the Madonna level, but really good nononetheless).
Having said that, nobody can top Prince’s halftime show in the pouring rain. Not even Janet’s boob!

Grew up watching football with my dad. One of my favorite memories was the first big stadium game he took me to. I played football in middle and high school. Now my son watches football with me, which has become one of the best parts of my day.
So yeah, football is “seriously” family friendly. Unless your family is a collective bunch of hyper-sensitive nose bleeds, that is, in which case I’m sure you’ll be at the ballet on SuperBowl Sunday anyway, so what do you care?

The first time some straight guys have seen Madonna this century.
Madonna ( and maybe Janet Jackson ) paved the way for so many successful non-singers in our business- Rhianna, Britney Spears, Ke$ha, etc… I have never taken any well-regarded music critic seriously that gave a rave review to Madonna ( unfortunately , they are many ) . Her legacy , in my book, will always be her lip-synching , media whoring, and her enormous ego . Plus, Paula Abdul was always a better dancer than Madonna.
Because that is what football fans across America really want to see, washed up fifty year old popstars lip synching to club music while French acrobats in clown makeup enact the idea of “sport” by twisting themselves into pretzel shapes.
Legitimate NFL football fans have long ago abondoned the idea that the Superbowl halftime show has any interest in catering to us. The Madonna idea will bring in a certain demographic, with a great deal of expendable income, that major advertisers salivate over.
Well, there’s always Puppy Bowl.
The BEST thing about Madonna doing the Super Bowl halftime show is being able to switch over to Animal Planet and watch Puppy Bowl without missing anything good.

Could you be more desperate to downgrade her accomplishments? Her competitors as far as chart records are names like, oh, the Beatles and Elvis Presley.

Reactions here are as boring as Madonna ! Obsessed with youth. American cinema is plagued with young beauties… Can’t watch a teenage movie without having the feeling to be facing a beauty pageant. As a result, when the young don’t go to the cinema anymore because they are too busy with downloading music/games and films, nobody else goes to the cinema. Full stop.
Stop acting as if age was so important. It’s better to smell “grandma” to quote a stupid post from around here than Justin Bieber ! at least Madonna has never done in her entire career what Carey has done ! That disastrous duet (and the worst video of 2011). Let’s bring Sting or Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd and all acts from the past. They still rule !
