IMAX’s said today that the opening of Paramount’s Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol during the weekend set a record for a December bow in the format, seemingly a big thumbs-up for a strategy that saw the Tom Cruise-starring tentpole premiere exclusively on IMAX ahead of its wide release tomorrow (including on 112 more IMAX screens). Of course, both IMAX and M:I-4 received plenty of help from a six-minute prologue of Warner Bros’ hugely anticipated The Dark Knight Rises that played ahead of the movie on 40 of IMAX’s 300 70mm screens — we’ll find out this weekend how the latest in the Paramount spy franchise fares on its own. IMAX said it grossed about $14 million overall for M:I-4 on 389 screens worldwide, topping the previous mark set last year by Tron: Legacy, and touted a 30%-plus increase in box office from Friday to Saturday as proof that the early-release strategy is a buzz-builder. Director Brad Bird shot about 30 minutes of action footage using IMAX cameras.

It was less than 10% of IMAX which was playing the prologue of dark knight. I would hardly call that the reason why MI:4 did so well.
MI:4, regardless of how it does in box office, is the best movie you will see in long time. Let the good time begin for you.
I found mission impossible ghost protocol thrilling, fun, and even hilarious in all the right places. while I still find mission impossible 3 to be the best of the franchise, ghost protocol is a strong second and it is definitely a step in the right direction. this new movie also proves how valuable tom cruise is to this franchise. He brings a much needed level of energy and intensity that is the linchpin of this fine story and provides a great compliment to the other actors especially simon pegg. Tom Cruise, in my opiniondelivers a kinetic and adrenalized performance that has yet to be rivaled by any action star.
I agree with the above commenter – I don’t know ANYONE who saw the 6 minute prologue to The Dark Knight Rises…but I know plenty of people who went to the IMAX just to see MI4. I’m not a big moviegoer, but I found the film to be a thrill a minute. I think the false narrative of Batman goosing MI4′s returns that is being peddled on Deadline Hollywood to be misleading at best and flat out wrong at worst.
There is a wide price range even among the 40-or-so theaters that showed the DKR prologue. In Ontario, the ticket price is $15. In Orange County, add another $5 per IMAX seat. I guess they charge by what the community can bear.
Is the DKR IMAX trailer not running after this week? If so, that hasn’t been well publicized…
dark knight was so overhyped that media just thinks the new batman is God! mission 4 is good without it.
