EXCLUSIVE: NBC already has a series set behind the scenes of a sketch comedy show in Emmy-winning comedy 30 Rock. Now the network is looking to pull back the veil on the inner workings of reality series. NBC has bought American Dream, an hourlong spec written by Paul Kolsby and executive produced by Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay, feature producer Andrew Lazar and Steve Shainberg. Shainberg, director of the 2002 feature Secretary, is also attached to direct the potential pilot. American Dream is described as a bitingly funny, risque and sophisticated melodrama about the symbiotic relationship between network executives and the “talent” in a reality television series.
Kolsby, a playwright and screenwriter, had a lot of personal experience to draw on in writing the American Dream — he has worked as a producer on a number of reality series, including Jersey Shore and Bridezillas. Kolsby developed the project with Shainberg and Lazar. Original Artists, which reps Kolsby and Lazar then gave the script to Hargitay who loved it and came on board as an executive producer. Through her producing deal at NBC, she took the script to the network’s brass who picked it up. Hargitay is repped by CAA; Shainberg is managed by Industry Entertainment. Lazar is currently producing Akira for Warners with Jaume Collete-Serra directing and Gunslinger for New Regency with James Mangold directing.

When will Hollywood learn that middle America doesn’t give a crap about behind-the-scenes shows and movies. They care about the product, not what it takes to make it. If they did, they wouldn’t go to McDonalds or buy lead-tainted toys from China. 30 ROCK is a modest-rated show. I’m from Chicago and nobody I know watches 30 ROCK. But they do watch NCIS (pretty much anything on CBS). When it comes to Mariska’s show, I see NBC with yet another failure. WHAT THE HELL IS NBC DOING?!?! THEY HAVE A NEW BOSS BUYING THE SAME GD CRAP?!?!
Jealous you’re not from the “real entertainment capitol” of the world, my Dear?
This would have been a really great idea say, 5 years ago when people didn’t already understand how reality works. Now it’s just another office comedy that may or may not work based on casting.
YOU are SO RIGHT
I’m not a fan of the reality shows as a genre in any way shape or form, but if Mariska Hargitay’s is doing it, even in production,I’d check it out .I do agree that this is probably the beginning of the end for her role on SVU,which saddens me.
What Mariska Hargitay NEEDS to be doing is what she’s doing now — stay LAW & ORDER: SVU’s leading lady! And what NBC needs to do, deal with TNT (Turner Network Television) and Dick Wolf and let TNT have original episodes of LAW & ORDER and LAW & ORDER: LA. Or NBC needs to make a revived LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT, Kathryn Erbe want’s to return to the show (despite D’Onofrio is seeking to move on) so that says something. http://facebook.com/renewcriminalintent
Does this mean she’s leaving SVU?
No an offical on the show stated that Mariska isn’t leaving SVU. She’s not starring on the other show that’s she producing. She can act on SVU and produce this new show.
no, she can ep 100 shows and not actually ever do anything
I can see the scripts already. Angst filled scenes with lines like ” they’re not hooking up, how can we get them to hook up?” and the chaos when the beer distributer is late “Booze! We need more booze for the mice!”
Then of course the ever politically sensitive casting sessions “Are you sure you aren’t just a little gay? Because you’re so good looking we’d love to have you on the show but we need more gays – and angst ridden gats too…can you do angst? Maybe you just dont know youre gay yet”
“OMG! They’re teebowing under the covers!!”
tink–hope mariska sees this post–they should hire you to write!
Thank you for putting the word talent in parentheses with regard to reality television stars.
Reality shows are horible, stopped waching any of them soon after they started. Once a camera gets turned on-they aren’t reality. “the Talk” is a nice additon to daytime—but why the elegant, lovely, bright, personable, knowledgeable Julie Chen does “Big Brother”–is beyond me, many with whom I’ve discussed it. That show is boorish, stupid,& as usual, pits folks against each other – exhibits behavior we wouldn’t accept in our kids, or our friends. Given the high ratings of TV land, Nick at Night, maybe the networks should give thought to some similar type programming.
Disappointed in Mariska for so obviousley taking the money and run…you’re lucky if she even shows up on set of this stupid idea. And is Greenblatt burying himself. Disappointing also in his lack of talent with the crap he’s buying. Though better of both.
