NBC has bought a single-camera ensemble comedy from blogger/Twitter personality Kelly Oxford. The untitled project, which Oxford will write, centers on a divorcing couple and the wife’s overbearing sister — who try to raise their families together after the sale of their house falls through. Friends alum Ira Ungerleider is supervising the project with Universal TV-based producers Karey Burke and Todd Holland.
The project, produced by Universal TV, originated as an idea by Philadelphia Eagles co-owner Christina Weiss Lurie, producer of the 2010 feature documentary Inside Job, and her partners Alan Barnette and Richard Gelb. A search for a write was launched, resulting in the hire of Oxford, a Calgary blogger and stay-at-home mother of three whose snarky, straight-up observational tweets have garnered more than 266,000 followers, including Howard Stern, Jimmy Kimmel and Roger Ebert. Oxford has pilot experience — last season she had a family comedy in development at CBS based on the blog she launched in 1997 and its companion Twitter feed, with Jessica Alba attached to executive produce. With Oxford on board, the new project was sold to NBC. Free Agents showrunner/executive producer Ungerleider, who became available after the freshman NBC series was canceled, was brought in to supervise the script along with fellow Free Agents executive producers Burke and Holland. Burke and Holland will executive produce the Kelly Oxford comedy through their Dark Toy Entertainment, along with Underleider, Lurie, Barnette and Gelb. Ungerleider is repped by UTA, everyone else is with WME. Oxford’s book of comedic essays, Everything Is Perfect When You’re A Liar, is slated to be released by to HarperCollins next year. Here is a sample of some of her recent tweets:
“That’s you” is one of my favorite games to play with my husband when we see disgusting people.
Just told 3 yr old she looked pretty. She said, “No I don’t. I have vomit in my stomach.” Jesus, kid, take a compliment.
“No one listens to voicemail anymore.” – my outgoing voicemail message.
Having kids makes you look stable to the people who thought you were crazy, and crazy to the people who thought you were stable.
If you take the time to listen to people you’ll realize why most don’t.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

There are fameballs and no-talent morons, and then there is Kelly Oxford.
Most folks can interpret that as the high compliment intended, but Kelly can interpret it as a Jersey-Shore-class insult.
Ira Ungerleider is awesome, talented, and with Kelly O should prove a formidable team. Great buy, NBC.
triumph of (Canadian) mediocrity.
This is great (please RT)
Right On.
American TV needs more Kelly Oxford scripts and less Shonda Rhimes.
Thanks Canada, good export.
Wait a minute! Did the Debbie Downer character from SNL sell a show?
Congratulations Kelly … wish you much success with this!
Wow, she sure does tweet about her kids a lot. We get it, hon, you managed to squeeze out 3 additional human beings. Congrats. Now, shut up about it.
Stop acting like she’s the only person to write a script who also has a Twitter account, or that her Twitter account is the only reason she sold a script. Did her success on Twitter help open some doors? Sure, that’s a very real possibility. But is it the only reason she sold a script? No, definitely not. No network is that stupid that they’d hire someone just because they can write 140 characters at a time, not even NBC.
Well deserved.
She has a strong voice and it looks like she partnered up with the right people. I’m sure it will be a hit.
Love her! Can’t wait to watch! Big congrats KO.
Twitter personality? Really?!?
The Mayans were right – one year and counting.
Meh. She’s not funny, just snarky.
How does that translate to TV? The audience will not watch this. “Shit My Dad Says” GOT canned, so will this.
Agreed. I don’t care how hip early 21st century audiences are supposed to be… snarky gets old & it’s overdone. Igratiating characters you wish were your real life friends will always draw people in. Ingratiating and contemporary needn’t be mutually exclusive.
So you read the script and it was snarky? Or are you just on deadline being snarky?
If we’re giving out sitcoms based on snark, you would have 3 sir.
At least she is observational and funny and worth oxygen.
Good for her, but it sounds terrible. Who wants to see a show centering on two annoying women?
There already IS a show about two annoying women on NBC. It’s the hour of the Today Show featuring Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford.
She has 266,000 twitter followers. That’s already more viewers than “Community.”
This show will probably get cancelled because anything truly funny, interesting or intelligent on TV does.
Please, dear lord, someone cast me for this show. I will fly to NYC, LA or anywhere for an audition, and I’m an actress who doesn’t suck. Im actually pretty awesome and I bet I could perform one of Kelly Oxford’s characters with the correct amount of plucky frankness.
I’m not kidding.
Well, for all of you who ever wondered what an anorexic Shania Twain would look like, there’s your answer!
I don’t know who this person is but from those sample jokes she sounds like kind of a jerk.
I am very happy for you Kelly. I’ve been reading you since the early Xanga days. Can’t wait to watch the show.
Congratulations Kelly on your success
Sally,
Many others have acquired ‘twitter fame’ and tried to sell their scripts and have failed. Sorry you want to squat on this woman’s success. Jealousy is a bitch.
Kelly. Congrats!
You broke the business when you had more going against you than most of these writers who can’t get a break. Innovative and I look forward to reading the script!
She sold two pilots. Get over it.
Due to my practicing a faux Amish lifestyle, I’m unfamiliar with Ms. Oxford, however, I am intimately aware of the numerous difficulties associated with simultaneously raising children by staying at home while pursuing a creative career. Anyone who has had to put a script rewrite on hold in order to change diapers knows what I mean.
She has my respect and should her project evolve into a series, I’ll watch it even if I have to do that streaming thing I’ve read about as I don’t own a TV.
Kelly Oxford tips horribly and she has a team of people who write her tweets.
No, none of that is true. She is super talented. And smoking hot.
I suggest her talent is outmatched by her looks. Win-Win.
