Peter Weller’s reps confirm he’s joining the cast of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek sequel, in what is a principal role but one they would not specify. Weller, best known in feature sci-fi circles for his iconic role as Robocop, has been busy as a director, and for acting stints on 24, Dexter, Fringe and Psych. Paramount will release the Star Trek sequel May 17, 2013. Alice Eve and Benicio Del Toro are likely to take part, joining the returning original cast that is headed by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Who should Weller play? Paramount and Abrams spent the weekend knocking down a speculative report Del Toro would play the Kahn role that Ricardo Montalban played in the original Star Trek series and the 1982 feature film. Weller’s repped by APA and BMP.

Obviously the only appropriate role would be as a member of the Borg.
Weller appeared in two episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise in its final season.
Oh snap Nikki — you didn’t even mention that one of the stars of Star Trek is Zoe Saldana. Why? Why didn’t you mention that Zoe was the top star in the movie?
Uh, maybe because she wasn’t?
He’s a good actor and it’s good to see him in a mainstream project but he was already a special guest star on ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ in 2005. His character in this film may be related to that character, John Frederick Paxton.
• The Orion Syndicate as the villains
• Large all-star cast as well as many cameos
• More planets?
• Larger space battles with more starships
• Kirk having better fighting skills
• Kirk having several human love interests played by Hollywood’s most beautiful young actresses
• The Star Trek theme music from the Insurrection end credits used at the end
Fantastic under appreciated actor
Good on him !
Great casting.
He’ll play a member of Starfleet brass who secretly wants the eugenics technology from Khan’s crew for his own evil plans. This shit practically writes itself.
Weller was terrific in Showtime’s Odyssey Five.
4 years inbetween installments of a “relaunched franchise” is much too long. Paramount needed to strike while the iron was hot and it’s going to hurt this film’s appeal.
As far as waiting for Abrams and company to “find the right script,” if this movie is actually a KHAN remake (oh, sorry, “reimagining”) then that excuse goes right out the window.
STAR TREK is about more than revenge stories. Making another Khan film smacks of total desperation right after they just DID a similar story in the first Abrams picture!
If Khan is the villain of the next ST movie (and I don’t have any idea whether he will or won’t be)I don’t think the movie would be a remake or reimagining of “The Wrath of Khan.” If anything, it would be more of a remake of “Space Seed,” the season 1 original series episode that introduced Khan.
Fans will wait as long as the product is good. But I agree, four years is painful. Star Trek really belongs on TV. The movies were only ever the cherry on top.
Weller is also an adjunct professor of history (specializing in Classics, I believe) at Syracuse.
@Goldman. The character that Weller played in Enterprise predates Abrams’s Star Trek by about 25 years. (See spoiler below for the other reason.)
No, I think Weller’s role will be a new one and written to fit his subdued style of acting. I’ve never seen him play villains, so I’m thinking it’ll be something on else.

SPOILER BELOW
Weller’s character in Enterprise also dies in the second of the two episodes. Kinda hard for him to exist in the Star Trek sequel.
AlienFanatic – Goldman said ‘may be RELATED to that character…’. But I agree that he’ll probably play a new character. And Del Toro is NOT Khan.
Weller was terrific as Stan Liddy in Dexter, season 5.
I’m guessing the “creative” minds behind this next Trek will be lazy and just use Khan again (even though Wrath of Khan can’t be improved on. And they basically used the ST:Nemesis plot for the reboot).
It’s just about making it look as hip as possible for younger audiences, and slapping on some high 3D prices. Story is for the olds!
He has been Directing episodes of Sons of Anarchy and doing a Fine job, good choice.
He was fantastic on 24 and Fringe. So glad he will be back in the public eye.
Weller has always been one of the nicest, most approachable actors I’ve ever met. Very talented, very sharp.
Some time ago, as a lowley PA on a tv show that filmed in NY, I chatted it up with Mr. Weller during lunch about William S. Burroughs. Not only did he give me his time and talk passionately, he also shooed away the a PR person who was attempted to pull him away for something, and continued to chat w me.
It was my first week working in this industry and I’ll never forget that.
I would rather see a studio finally greenlight “Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League.”
don’t forget his amazing sy fi performance in Odyssey 5 – still wish they would finish that show
Perhaps he will play an Evil version of Buckaroo Banzai?! LOL
