Following the screenings, members will determine the nominees by an averaged point system of voting. If no song receives an average score of 8.25 or more, there will be no nominees in the category. If only one song achieves that score, it and the song receiving the next highest score shall be the two nominees. If two or more songs (up to five) achieve that score, they shall be the nominees. A DVD copy of the song clips will be made available to those branch members who are unable to attend the screening and who request it for home viewing. A mail-in ballot will be provided.
Under Academy rules, a maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film. If more than two songs from a film achieve a score of 8.25 or more, the two songs with the highest scores will be the nominees.
To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.
The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar® presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

No “Masterpiece” for W./E. ? It was nominated for the Golden Globe. Any reason it isn’t eligible here?
“Hanna” had the best soundtrack of the year, IMO. Chemical Bros.
Why isn’t “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri from The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn nominated?
Please…PLEASE…tell me that none of these were written or performed by Randy Newman.
(*sorry Randy, I’ve always loved your non-movie work)
Jeez, why don’t they just call the category “The Love Song from…..”. It’s all just friggin’ wallpaper.
Except for Trent Reznor or the Chemical Bros, lately it’s been total Snoozeville. How can Muzak be given an award?
I agree, for the most part, that most of these songs are just flash-in-a-pan, but it’s unfair to critique them without having actually sat down to listen to them. “The Keeper”, for example, is poignant and well sung (it’s actually better at capturing what the sub-par movie couldn’t; plus it’s NO love song).
It’s not a song, but I’m really hoping there isn’t a nomination push this year for another generic Hans Zimmer score. The only thing more forgettable than the awful SHERLOCK HOLMES films has been their music. I just saw the second HOLMES last weekend and couldn’t believe how weak the film was. The new MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, on the other hand, was terrific — and it had another great Michael Giacchino score. For Best Score this year, I’m hoping THE ARTIST gets recognized. I’ve also been hearing that the DRAGON TATTOO score is pretty impressive. (Sorry for a rambling comment…)
I liked the music from THE ARTIST, but the substantial use of Bernard Herrmann’s score from VERTIGO (in a key sequence) might derail a chance at a nomination.
I agree – “Sherlock” sucked. Lame movie.
That’s too bad about “The Artist” score.
The muppets should win this. This voting system is ridiculous — the average is too high. There should always be five nominees
I really loathe this category. It means another 30 minutes of boring, sappy songs performed by artists who should have known better, on an Oscar show that is already tedius and bloated.
My favorite songs are “Real” from Rio, the two from Winnie the Pooh, the Albert Nobbs song, and the one from The Help.
“Masterpiece” for W./E. was snubbed because it was written by Madonna. They refuse to acknowledge her work when she has had at least five best songs snubbed. Musicians Randy Newman, Melissa Etheridge, Annie Lennox, Eminen, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen all have Oscars for thoroughly forgettable songs but they just ignore her.
Seriously?
It should go to Menken. (If only cause I want to see it performed at the Oscars, just as it was in the montage.)
Container Park – Chemical Brothers from HANNA come on
I hope P!nk will be nominated for “Bridge of Light”.
It is such an inspirational song in the movie and in itself.
Her voice is amazing in it, the production of the song is top-notch and the words are, as I already said, inspiring.
It would be truly nice to see her name in the nominees list and win the award for “Bridge of Light”.
