Paramount Pictures is using the occasion of its 100th anniversary next year to update its mountaintop. The studio today unveiled a new logo that will launch in front of its tentpole Tom Cruise actioner Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, which opens on IMAX on Friday and everywhere else December 21. The studio’s first logo (taken from the Wasatch mountains) was created in 1916; the new one will be used throughout 2012, with the “100 Years” wording dropped beginning in 2013 and going forward. It’s designed by Devastudios, which also has done corporate logos for Lionsgate, Nickelodeon, and Focus Features. Here’s the new Paramount logo (left) and the old:

Looks good.
You know I always HATED when Universal switched from that sweeping shot of the real earth and changed it to those stupid neon glowing colors.
Took a little magic out of it. I miss the 90′s…

That’s probably the brightest I’ve seen the logo since the days of Gulf + Western. And as a fan of logos & animations, I can’t wait to see it in action.
since the sun’s position doesn’t quite make sense, i wonder what the source is for the fill. must be brad’s smile with the new contract.
Ooooohhh, pretty mountain. I love the new logo; it look more amazing and majestic than Paramount’s other logos. Like JK Simmons said (pun on Spider-Man movies) I can’t wait for it in action. Maybe on the company website or on YouTube bootlegged by some random person.
sweet!! its like what HDR would have looked like in the golden days
It’s almost as if they’re saying, “OK, it’s not THAT big!”
I get nostalgic for the old, but, that is a beautiful picture. I like the sunshine on the mountain.
Looks beautiful. Nice upgrade.
LOL at the shrinking mountain. By 150 it will be an anthill.
I’m not a big fan of it, but this will probably look pretty cool in 3D.
Wow, so that was it? It is a bit brighter than the previous iteration, but what is surprising is how small it is compared to the background. The logo seems to be lost in the image.
It’s obviously reflecting global warming, as most of the snow seems to have melted.
Ya, way to small. If I were running Paramount, I would have made it WAY BIGGER. It’s a big deal, why make it so you can’t see it.
What a disaster. Look at both logos. In the previous version you see “Paramount,” the iconic mountaintop, the classic stars… in the new one, the first things you see are: “100″ and the sun. The mountaintop looks eroded and small, the name “Paramount” is a secondary feature and the stars are dark & lost. Bad design all around.
I’m surprised Paramount’s using e-on’s vue! It’s a rather cheap 3d design program, Paramount must have had a bad year.
It’s actually made using Terragen 2, for a large part. You can also see it animated here http://www.devastudios.com/
The animation looks fantastic, if you ask me.
Jim,
Your comment “I’m surprised Paramount’s using e-on’s vue! It’s a rather cheap 3d design program, Paramount must have had a bad year” Is incorrect the application used was Planetsides Terragen 2. If this was Vue the rock textures and displacement would be far more less realistic. As far as price goes Have you seen the tests on landscape shots like this from 3dmax maya and other expensive 3d apps, there is no comparison
Nick
HA! Its not Vue. It is Terragen 2. FTW.
The mountain doesn’t look smaller, it just looks like the camera has been pulled back for a wider shot. I like it. I look forward to seeing it in motion.
I, too, can’t wait to see the new Paramount logo in action when I see “Mission: Impossible” in a few weeks.
Although I *do* agree – the mountain and stars should have been bigger – the sunlight is a nice touch; I think it suggests the dawn of a new century of filmmaking for the studio.
And I also heard – Paramount Television will be *revived* on January 8. Wonder if they’ll use this new logo, too?
This is a way more skiable logo, that’s for sure…
