UPDATE: Paul McCartney’s ex-wife Heather Mills has declared she is being made a “scapegoat” by Piers Morgan. Mills’ name popped up repeatedly at a Tuesday session of the Leveson Inquiry into UK press ethics during which Morgan was grilled about a message left by McCartney on Mills’ voice mail which he previously said had been played for him. The erstwhile News Of The World and Daily Mirror editor refused to reveal who played the message, but it was suggested it was Mills or someone authorized by her. In a statement posted to her website, Mills writes in part: “For the avoidance of doubt, I can categorically state that I have never ever played Piers Morgan a tape of any kind, never mind a voice message from my ex-husband. Piers Morgan is doing all he can to deter the Leveson inquiry from finishing their important job. Morgan is using me as his scapegoat and I would be more than happy to answer any questions that the inquiry would like to put to me.” Lord Justice Leveson on Tuesday said he was considering calling Mills.
PREVIOUS: London police arrested a female officer on suspicion of corruption in connection with a multipronged investigation into activity connected to phone hacking at the shuttered News of the World. Additionally, former News of the World editor Andy Coulson lost a bid to force publisher News Group to pay for his legal defense related to phone hacking charges. But in a separate ruling the parent company was ordered to resume paying legal fees for the private investigator which the paper used in the case, Glenn Mulcaire, as he faces scores of civil claims.
And finally, former business journalist and newspaper colleague James Hipwell said Piers Morgan must have known that phone hacking was rife at the Daily Mirror when Morgan was editor. “Nothing happened at the newspaper without him knowing,” Hipwell testified, a day after Morgan issued a denial at a televised hearing. Hipwell said phone hacking was a “standard journalistic tool for gathering information” and that Morgan was heavily involved in all his reporters’ work. “The newspaper was built around the cult of Piers.”

Morgan on phone hacking is starting to look like Herman Cain on women. And he’s about as convincing.
Where’s Anderson Cooper “Keeping It Honest” segment about Morgan Piers. Oh CNN is just like all other media. They protect their own.
More reasons to put an end to Piers’ boring talk show on CNN.
As someone who has worked as a journalist in both print and broadcast, I can tell you I never, ever, not once, had an editor who did not know or care about the providence of a story. The bigger it was, the more they wanted to know about how it was sourced and whether it ‘stood up.’ If Piers Morgan was editing a UK national daily newspaper, a mass market circulation tabloid, and genuinely did not know where his stories were coming from and how, then I’m the new guy running North Korea.
Exactly. And because there must be dozens of ex-Mirror colleagues who know this to be true, Morgan is playing a pretty stupid game by stonewalling. It’s like denying you had anything to drink at a party when 100 other guests saw you vomit into the punch bowl. He’s going to be a human pinata before this is all over.
CNN has got to be so pyched they now have a reason to fire Piers apart from shit ratings. I predict Joy Behar gets that job.
I think people keep missing the point.
If tabloid reporters just used simple phone hacking techniques to get stories, that’s a little bit interesting, but not that big of a deal. Just convict the perps, make them pay big fines, and make them spend three months doing community service at organizations that serve their former readers.
The real question is whether Murdoch somehow used phone hacking and private investigator reports to blackmail government officials.
Great, thanks a lot Piers. You’ve made Mills sympathetic to the public. For that alone you deserve jail time.
Makes you wonder how many other corporate media organizations were engaging in illegal phone-hacking. Something tells me it wasn’t just News Corp.
I believe Morgan that Mills voluntarily her personal messages to the press. She went through a very acrimonious divorce with Paul Mc Cartney ( who’s the famous one with money )…..in divorce case or custody cases, ” gold digging women ” if married to famous wealthy , high profile men, the women are always vicious and play dirty by using the press to their advantage , a tool to intimidate the men to get more money out of them…..like the Russian whore who intentionally provoked and taped Mel Gibson and sold the tapes to Radar on line for money…..she ended up losing and got little money…..I remember Paul Mc Cartney’s divorce was very bitter and ugly, and he had made a generous offer to her in which she rejected and demanded half of his money that she didn’t make….the judge ended up awarding her a lot less than Mc Cartney had originally offered her, and Mills dumped a glass of water on Mc Cartney’s lawyer’s head in the court room , at the end of the case as she walked out after ” losing “……
Mills’ divorce was very public and ugly and she wanted a lot of money from her ex husband in which she was not entitled to by law, so leaking private phone messages to the press to humiliate her famous ( Beatles ) husband to ” get more money from him ” is absolutely true and believable! You don’t know to what measures people do in divorce cases for money…..some have included murder, extortion, framing innocent people….things get very ugly and it’s when you see the true colors of whom you married…..I absolutely believe that Mills voluntarily used the press to her advantage to destroy her then famous husband…..Paul Mc Cartney is the famous one, not her, and if she was ” that nice “, then why was she demanding for ” half of his money ” that she didn’t earn ?…..please Heather Mills, stop the game and deceit! She lost in court! The judge gave her by law what she thought was right, and Mills was lucky she even got anything! Since her, Mc Cartney has learned his lesson the hard way with ” gold diggers “…..Mills is vicious and devious and a ” gold digger “….and she’s stupid! She gave the private information to the tabloids to destroy her famous ex husband!
Your imagination is running wild.
It’s like “Watergate” only it’s the Brit press this time, the Brit press may regret jumping on “News Corp” as bad as they did. What did THEY know and when did they know it….and do it.
I thought the message was supposedly of Paul trying to make up with her and singing to her. How could this be helpful to her case for more money/used against him in a divorce.
Don’t like HM but think she’s telling the truth here.
Piers…come clean. You’re not fooling anyone.
Guardian lied. At least 37 times.
“On 13 December the following clarification was published: “An article about the investigation into the abduction and death of Milly Dowler (News of the World hacked Milly Dowler’s phone during police hunt, 5 July, page 1) stated that voicemail ‘messages were deleted by [News of the World] journalists in the first few days after Milly’s disappearance in order to free up space for more messages. As a result friends and relatives of Milly concluded wrongly that she might still be alive.’ Since this story was published new evidence – as reported in the Guardian of 10 December – has led the Metropolitan police to believe that this was unlikely to have been correct and that while the News of the World hacked Milly Dowler’s phone the newspaper is unlikely to have been responsible for the deletion of a set of voicemails from the phone that caused her parents to have false hopes that she was alive, according to a Metropolitan police statement made to the Leveson inquiry on 12 December.” To make this clear we have – since that item appeared on 13 December – appended a footnote to the following 37 stories below that contain either the error or a reference to it.”
