Harry Morgan, a character actor on the stage, screen and TV whose most iconic role was playing Col. Sherman Potter for 10 seasons on M*A*S*H, died Wednesday in Brentwood of complications from pneumonia, the AP reported. He was 96. He was nominated for eight Emmys — including two for directing the Korean War comedy-drama, which was one of the longest-running series in history — and won for playing Potter in 1980. Morgan appeared often on TV, starting in the business in its early days, and also had a long stint as Sgt. Joe Friday’s trusty partner on Dragnet. In addition to appearing on Broadway early in his career, Morgan made 50 films, working with the likes of Henry Fonda, John Wayne and Elvis Pressley and amassing credits like High Noon, Inherit The Wind, The Apple Dumpling Gang and The Shootist.

He was a fine actor who had a great run. RIP, Harry.
Henry “Harry” Morgan was one of the great character actors and droll comic actors of all time. You don’t find many like him any more because the stars usually want all the good lines and the supporting people just become scenery. I remember him first as Pete Porter on “December Bride” and later on “Pete and Gladys” where he was better than the leads. Plus I’ll never know how he always kept a straight face acting opposite Jack Webb.
I also remember him in December Bride and Pete and Gladys. And they BETTER include him in “In Memoriam” come Oscar time!
I was wondering if anyone was going to mention December Bride and Pete & Gladys (though I barely remember either one).
A loss know that he’s gone, and a loss when he retired from acting. But what a legacy! Check out youtube for his interview with the Museum Of Broadcasting if you want his take on his career. He’ll be missed.
He didn’t do 10 seasons of M*A*S*H. The series ran for 11 years and he first appeared in season 3 in the General Flipped at Dawn. M*A*S*H will always be one of the best shows ever made and Mr. Morgan will be terribly missed.
RIP Harry. He was the best.
Colonel Potter was a great role on a great show, and Morgan played the hell out of it. For my money, he gave the show its grit and heart and I preferred Potter to Henry Blake.
Patricia is correct – Sherman Potter was introduced in season 4, though Morgan played a feature role in one episode in season 3. So he was on for eight seasons (4-11).
I’ll never forget his voice. A deep and authoritative one – something I heard in real life when I was visiting a set for a TV movie back in the 80′s up in Seattle. He was a kind man to a 16 year-old wide-eyed pup and it fascinated me to watch him on set. Though I mostly remember all of the parts he had in movies as a second banana it’s still fun to click on a channel and see him on M*A*S*H. Always a joy when he would get perturbed and yell out “beaver biscuits.” He will be missed.
I recall him from Dragnet and a bunch of western movies, when he played Potter I thought wow, this guy seems like a military leader should be. He truly was very funny, to his family, friends, and fellow thespians, thank you for sharing him with us. RIP
Wow, so good this guy was. R.I.P.
Veteran character actor HARRY MORGAN was an absolute gem.
Where would the stars be without the support of the character actors that HOLLYWOOD used to have in abundance. Harry seemed to have outlived just about most of them. A movies, B movies, TV shows, comedy, drama… characters like Harry could do it all.
Highpoints like THE OX-BOW INCIDENT, HIGH NOON, INHERIT THE WIND and THE SHOOTIST, were always made that much better with dear old Harry playing his part. He will be sorely missed!
He got his first job from Marion Dougherty, who died just the other day.
Great actor. Let’s not forget classic film noirs he was in: Somewhere in the Night, Appointment With Danger, The Big Clock …. Always a great and memorable performance. RIP Mr. Morgan.
O Jeez , I just saw this. I’ve always liked Harry Morgan. From Dragnet to Elvis to M.A.S.H. , He could pull off anything. He used to modestly say that He just “got lucky” with His career , nothing could be farther from the truth. Your not around for that long in the biz with no talent. ( well , lets see how long Ryan Seacrest is around for , as I might have to retract that last statement). Best wishes to His family & friends. He will be missed!
