Another hard-to-untangle night, marked with local NFL preemptions. CBS posted big gains at 9 PM and 10 PM but they will likely be erased in the finals because the network’s fast nationals were inflated by a big football game in Pittsburgh. The Big Bang Theory (4.7/14) was the least impacted as the game started at 8:25 PM on the East Coast. The comedy returned after three weeks of repeats down 11%. Rules Of Engagement (3.2/9) was also down 11% from its last original three weeks ago to post a season low. Because of the game, Rules will likely be adjusted down, so the season low is expected to stick. Not expected to stick are the double-digit bumps for Person Of Interest (3.0/8, up 15% from three weeks ago) and The Mentalist (3.0/8, up 20%), which reflect game-related ratings inflation. For now, CBS is tracking as No.1 in 18-49 and total viewers for the night.
After an uptick last week, NBC’s soon-to-be-benched comedy Community (1.5/4) was down 12%. Parks And Recreation (1.7/6) was down 6% for a series low. The Office (2.9/8) and Whitney (1.9/5) were flat, tied with their season lows. With little promotion, a special airing of Grimm (1.6/4) in the 10 PM period matched the show’s most recent 18-49 delivery in its regular Friday 9 PM slot 3 weeks ago. It was up 23% from Prime Suspect‘s demo performance last week to post NBC’s highest 18-49 rating in the Thursday 10 PM hour in 11 weeks. Another Grimm original airs tonight.
Fox’s The X Factor result show (3.0/8) was down a tenth from last week. Bones (2.7/7) was also down a tenth. Its fast-national rating may have been inflated a little by a football preemption in Cleveland whose impact is expected to be small and limited mostly to the 9 PM hour. ABC aired a hodgepodge of unscripted programs: Wipeout (1.9/5), America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.9/5) and The Great Big American Auction special (1.4/4).

Yeah, I was wondering how much promo NBC did for Grimm’s Thursday episode. I suspected very little, since even NBC.com said Grimm would return with new episodes on December 9th.
Plus, the three week break didn’t help.
I liked GRIMM last night. I don’t know why so many people ragged on it. That said – I didn’t know it was on – I was just flipping channels – so I missed the first 20 minutes or so. Excited to see another new episode tonight.
Grimm is a flop. So amazing that they keep trying to make us believe it’s a hit. 4 million viewers in total. Since when does a show with that many viewers become a hit? It would be one thing if the show were good but it’s terrible. Even the effects are bad. Give it up NBC and put something else on. Surely there are better shows to be made. It dropped in the demo from Whitney which also does badly. Also of note: Grimm was heavily promoted this week.
For NBC, anything above 3 million is considered a hit. I can remember when the network was must watch television. What the hell happened to them?
The only NBC show I watch at all now is the Today Show. And if they do add Ryan Seacrest to that show, well then that’s it for my watching NBC at all.
And you’re right. They did promote Grimm heavily with their other Thursday shows. That’s how I knew it was on. I watched it for 15 minutes and had to change the channel. Awful, awful, awful.
You’re really old.
Wow…you’re amazing…you only watch one thing on NBC yet seem to know what they are promoting heavily on their network
Look at the cute Once Upon A Time troll. Angry little tyke isn’t he.
It always is closer to btwn 5-6 mill or so when it is in its regular timeslot on Friday nights, and has huge posts for DVR+ SD and DVR+7… plus it’s not about total viewers dumb dumb it’s about how they do in the demo.
a 1.6 is terrible in the demo. terrible. dumb dumb.
I love Grimm.
Last night’s musical episode of ‘Community’ was great and should’ve been very easy to promote. It’s a shame that NBC has already given up on this show… maybe Netflix can buy the rights and churn out another season like it did for ‘Arrested Development’.
When is the openly fake laugh track Whitney gonna get the hook?
On a decent network it would have gotten the hook by now. But on NBC, it’s one of their better-rated comedies. It’s pretty pathetic.
Okay…what the hell is going on over on GRIMM? Why is this show so low-energy and half-assed about its storytelling? Your typical episode starts off with a bang and a good premise…rolls on for a bit…gives up another boring interlude with the hero and his tedious girlfriend…meanders some more…and more…has another murder or two to wake you up…sloowwwly has the hero putting things together…peters out to a less-than-thrilling conclusion usually complete with another boring fiancee bit at the end…and that’s pretty much it. I won’t even get into the ridiculous habit this show has gotten into of the hero letting dangerous supernatural perps get arrested and processed like they were average perps–or having the perps turn out to be misunderstood and letting them just walk away. What’s the deal–do the writers just get bored halfway through and say the hell with it? Are they being so network/studio “noted” to death it’s causing creative paralysis? I’ve given this show four good-faith tries, but if TPTB aren’t fired-up enough to even give this some suspense, why should I care?
NBC- PLEASE judge Community by dvr viewings and downloads/streaming/dvd sales. It’s got a huge young following who don’t watch live TV.
And Parks and Rec is just a great show, I have no idea why more people aren’t watching it. Same request in regard to dvr and online ratings.
The reason COMMUNITY was down this week, was because THE BIG BANG THEORY was back with a new episode, as opposed to last week.
COMMUNITY needs to be moved up half an hour, and not compete with THE BIG BANG THEORY. Whoever scheduled those two shows against each other is a complete idiot. The majority of COMMUNITY viewers also watch BIG BANG. But the masses will watch BIG BANG over COMMUNITY; but if BIG BANG isn’t on, COMMUNITY would be their next choice.
NBC, move COMMUNITY to 8:30 and you’ll see, ratings will rise.
NBC needs to seriously evaluate their primetime programming for next year becasue at the rate they’re going, literally 955 of their shows should be canceled due to bad storylines, low ratings, bad acting and premises, or a variety of all these factors combined. They’re turning into a huge joke right now and not even Greenblat can possibly save this sinking ship. Whitney…REALLY??!!
Its no flop because it’s got the demos. But NBC will drive it into the ground just like they do with every show– NBC doesnt know how to schedule
