BREAKING: Reese Witherspoon will star in Devil’s Knot, the Atom Egoyan-directed drama about the West Memphis 3. As Deadline revealed just after the West Memphis 3 murder defendants were released from prison August 19, The Sweet Hereafter and Chloe director Egoyan came aboard to direct a script that was originally written by Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman, the team behind The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. Witherspoon will play Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the murder victims who initially believes the trio murdered her son, but she is eventually persuaded that the three suspects are innocent and wrongly accused. Filming begins next summer.
Egoyan has spent the last six weeks working with Boardman on a rewrite. The script is based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, an in-depth chronicle of the sensationalized trials that sent the three to prison for the murder of the three 8-year old boys who were found hog-tied in a drainage ditch. The project is not a rush job. Derrickson and Boardman began writing it in 2006 when the film first took root at Dimension Films. It will be produced by Elizabeth Fowler, Clark Peterson, Richard Saperstein and Boardman. Saperstein was Dimension president and he acquired the film. After he left, Dimension eventually put the project into turnaround and Saperstein became re-involved as producer. The package includes life rights deals with some of the figures in the case, and especially Ron Lax, a private investigator who has been working pro bono on trying to overturn the verdict since 1993. There are no rights deals with the West Memphis 3 defendants Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr because at the time, two were serving life sentences and Echols was on death row. The plan is to finance the film independently, but the filmmakers might well make a domestic distribution deal before getting underway.

Great choice for her. Glad to see her making real movies again.
I think you should use the word star very loosely in this case. She doesn’t exactly open a movie and hasn’t for a long, long time. But her agent is her husband and that always helps to secure some work.
dude, if u think she’s starring in films cause of her hubby, then you just woke up from a long sleep.
Touche’!!!
Straight to the $5 bin at Wal Mart.
Didn’t know there were $5 bins… but thanks for letting us know that’s where YOU shop!!! ha ha
Great choice!! Glad they secured an A list actress for the movie!! The other posters are crazy!! She is THE actress of this generation!! Very excited now that Reece is on board!
Are you on crack? She was okay several years ago, and i’m willing to give her a chance with this one, but she’s almost hit has-been status.
Exactly. It’s been a long time since things like ‘Election’.
erm.. Hello??? WALK THE LINE? amazing.
but, not to say I called it.. but as soon as I saw the headline for this story I totally knew was gonna be playing Pam! so yeah.. I called it!
Oh Please! More like the $3 bin at WalMart!
Well the romcom’s sure aren’t working for her! Don’t think she can pull off anything anymore! Sorry Reese!
Another dim-witted choice to move her one step further away from the mainstream audience that used to adore her. Her politics are clearly on display yet again…and her largely conservative audience–Walk the Line, Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama–are staying away in droves.
Read the transcripts, the actual trial transcripts, and see what a travesty it was, releasing these animals.
Jenny, have YOU read anything about this case? It was a travesty that they were ever arrested in the first place. There was ZERO evidence against them. It was a witch hunt from the beginning. Why don’t you look at all the evidence that they DIDN’T do it because there is a ton of it. How about the evidence that was lost and mishandled that pointed to other suspects? Open your eyes and read something other than the transcripts because everything wasn’t introduced at trial.
Reese will do a good job in this part. Pam is gonna be a fiery character if they get it right..
THANK YOU.
Amen.
Of course you meant to say INNOCENT animals.
I really think Reese Witherspoon will pull this off. I can see her as Pam Hobbs if they do like a “Monster” type makeup job on her. I think she’s a better actress than people give her credit for
There’s a big DID THEY? hanging over this case, Reese should aboard this project asap. Juding from the murder cases committed by youngsters in Liverpool, Norway and recently Sweden, the way these kids were murdered sounds a lot like something only kids would resort to. It was animalistic.
Fabulous choice – end of story.
Dear Reese,
My husband is the ultimate Johnny Cash fan. Because of him, I think I have memorized nearly everything Johnny ever publically put out in the music realm. We loved Walk the Line!!!! When the children come someday to dig through our things, one of them will hopefully cherish it as much as we have done. Being older, it is only one of the reasons that we fool with the dvd player to watch a movie.
Regardless, LOL. I am also a long-time WM3 supporter. I have followed this case since college and it first exploded in the local and state news. I was also a news writer so it was my job to follow it. A fellow writer with me was one of the first to be granted an interview and has remained a supporter all these years even though she is no longer in Arkansas but went on to big-time news.
Supporters and I have joked now and then what would happen if a big movie about the case ever was written and who would play the characters. I actually sat down in my chair and cried like a baby to know it was you who would play Pam. You are the perfect one to do it. How beautiful you and she both are. You both have that elegance, lady-like demure about yourselves. Just perfect. I don’t know whose idea it was to bring you on the scene, but boy were they ever so right when they did. Now, it is going to be very interesting to see who else is going to be in there with you.
Thank you sooooo very much. I can’t wait for the show to come out. We don’t often go to the movies anymore, but when we do, you know something great is in the works. This one is going to be one of them. Good going. When the children go through our things one day, they will find Walk the Line and Devil’s Knot. Already they know that the WM6… the three little victims who lost their lives and the 3 teens now men who also lost a good portion of their own lives have almost become like family to them because I have spent a lot of time on researching it… whoever gets those movies one day is going to cherish them because they know those two items come straight from their Mom’s heart.
Love you and the cast to come,
Polly Murphy-Frye
I agree she was a good choice but Pam being elegant and lady like demure is crazy talk!
The Weatherspoon ship has long set sail. ELECTION AND WALK THE LINE were great movies, greatly directed, LEGALLY BLONDE–pretty good- that brought out some of her talents (which aren’t Meryl Streep-like, they are very limited)…her last few have bombed because she’s just not that interesting to watch, nor are the roles…this could be an excellent part as written, haven’t read the script–but don’t think she has the depth, chops, charisma to do it justice, creatively and artistically (and she is NOT a box office draw..WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, anyone?)
Im from
West Memphis, went to school with the victims. Saw the accused murderers at the local girls club and the scared the sh* t out of me. Pam Hobbs was a rough lookin woman, they’re gonna need to roughen Reece up!
