SAG Awards Movies: Full Of Surprises And Omissions
SAG Awards TV: Rookies Join The Fray
UPDATED: LOS ANGELES (Dec. 14, 2011) — Judy Greer from The
Descendants and Regina King from Southland announced the nominees for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. SAG President Ken Howard introduced Greer and King. The SAG Awards nominations in five film and eight television categories were revealed in the SilverScreen Theater at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood and telecast live on TNT and webcast. Nominations for the SAG Honors for film and television stunt ensembles also were announced by SAG Awards Committee Chair JoBeth Williams and SAG Awards Committee Vice Chair Daryl Anderson. The 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live coast-to-coast on TNT and TBS on January 29, 2012, at 8 PM (ET) / 5 PM (PT) from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles. The ceremony will also be telecast internationally. The Screen Actors Guild Awards, which made its debut in 1995, has become one of the industry’s most prized honors. Of the top industry accolades presented to performers, only the Screen Actors Guild Awards are selected solely by actors’ peers in Screen Actors Guild. Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,100 randomly selected Guild members from across the United States, chose this year’s Actor® and stunt ensemble honors nominees. Integrity Voting Systems, the Awards’ official teller, mailed the nominations secret ballots on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Voting was completed at noon on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011.
Final voting information will be mailed via postcard on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011. The entire active Guild membership across the country, numbering approximately 100,000 actors, may vote on all categories. Online voting is encouraged. In keeping with the SAG Awards commitment to sustainable practices, paper ballots will be available only upon request which must be made by Monday, Jan. 16, 2012. All votes must be received at Integrity Voting Systems by noon on Friday, Jan. 27:

Bechir is the big surprise. Did any pundit have him on any of their lists? No love at all for Drive, Hugo and Shame. Shame …
Jessica Lange has the whole TV Award season in the bag.
Jessica Lange is amazing on AHS, just a stunner, hope she nabs it.
YES! Her work on that show has been so OUTSTANDING. Even if I weren’t a fan of the series I would have been taken in by how brilliant her performances have been. There are great actresses in this category but her body of work on AHS really stands alone when you compare it with what the others in that category have been nominated for. I can’t believe that any submission would be more deserving of recognition than hers…
Jessica Lange should run away with Outstanding Actress in Drama Series for every awards show.
As great as Jessica Lange has always been, and she has always been brilliant, there is something so overwhelming about her power on this series, at this particular time in her life. You get a sense that she is devouring this role, relishing every syllable she speaks. She attacks the scenes with depth and subtlety and has never looked more beautiful – it’s incredible. What a clever move for her to take this role – fearless, GET IT, Ms. Lange!
THIS is acting at its best.
This may be the first time “subtlety” has been used to describe anything about American Horror Story.
Jessica has the best acting on TV this year. Nobody can touch her. So glad shes acting again, seemed like she had disappeared for awhile
Well I guess SAG is over “House” like everyone else. I’m rooting for Michael C. Hall.
Is the SAG nominating committee, blind, stupid or did they miss the screening of TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY when they considered the nominations for the cast award? Your omission devalues the award.
Richard LeParmentier
So very glad that Warrior is finally getting some attention. Nolte was very good in that performance.
Nolte was INCREDIBLE and so was WARRIOR. Glad to see SAG recognize a phenomenal performance in a film not enough people saw.
Where’s GARY OLDMAN ?
I know right? Strange since every actor gushes about him being an inspiration to them.
Such a strange year. No consensus, no break outs, and odds are the Golden Globe nominations will be totally different tomorrow!
I think the awards shows are heading for some all time low ratings. Nothing is resonating, everyone seems very *meh*.
Also please stop with the Dicaprio nominations, he’s been better, infinitely better. This is getting embarrassing.
Where in the world is the Homeland cast? Does the nominating committee watch tv?
I was wondering the same thing!! Claire Daines??? She’s incredible in that role. Well, this weeks episode will surely garner her an Emmy.
Homeland…totally agree. And Kelsey Grammer in BOSS. He blew me away as does the show and I actually hate Kelsey Grammer…or did. It’s the same old same old…and it’s old.
Glad to see recognition of great shows like Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and 30 Rock. The bad part is nothing for Louie or Parks and Recreation.
I guess the Hollywood frat boys/professional personas Brad, George and Leo thought it’d be a fun parlor trick to all be nominated at the same time…real actors like Fassbender, Oldman and Shannon be damned. Imagine all of the hilarious Oscar night pranks!
So completely agree with this post. Brad and George know how to schmooze the press and the critics. One rolls out a new girlfriend for the campaign, the other dangles the “we may get married and have more kids” bait which he does every season. I used to love the two of them, but their schtick is sooooo tired. and the pranks, and the “we’re so down to earth and charming”….ugh. And am I the only one who thinks all Pitt did for Moneyball was play Rusty from Oceans?
Meanwhile, there are all these great actors out there. Real actors, not personas, which is where I would categorize Pitt and Clooney. By real actors I mean Oldman, Fassbender, Shannon and the like. I guess they’ll have to figure out how the PR game is played if they stand a chance. Obviously, you can’t rely on talent alone.
And finally, where the heck is “Homeland”? One of the greatest casts on television. I’m really starting to wonder about these awards. Can’t wait for The Golden Globes noms tomorrow. If they can nominate The Tourist, they can pretty much get behind ANY crap.
so in other words you agree with yourself…
That is a mature attitude, blame the nominated actors because your favorites, or sorry “real actors”, didn’t get nominated. I certainly understanding not liking a particular actor or actress, but don’t belittle their talent because your favorite didn’t get an award. George and Brad are fantastic actors and in my opinion based on their actions, truly good people based as well.
@ box of hair. I’m pretty sure you can’t post here under multiple names. I know it hurts to think there might be more than one person who shares the view that George and Brad are overrated, but it is what it is.
@Precious926 Humility is what makes someone a good person, not telling people how humble you are. Also, I would never classify them as truly great on the level of a Gary Oldman, Michael Fassbender or countless others. We can certainly disagree on that.
The reality is that these awards are not all about talent. It is also about constantly schmoozing the press and for some like Pitt and Clooney, it is also about spending months and months campaigning through carefully-crafted staging of their personal lives. For that people do have a right to criticize the nominees.I would think the cynical people who often comment on this site would take offense to that sort of thing.
I just think it’s time to interject some fresh blood into these awards shows. Is it so wrong to maybe support the lesser names, people who don’t play those PR games and who don’t have half of CAA on the payroll?
Exactly.
Awful.
Ridiculous Michael Fassbender and Mulligan aren’t included. Ridiculous that Jonah Hill is. Ew, seriously?
Can’t believe Poehler (Lead Actress) and Offerman (Supporting Actor) were left out along with an expected Ensemble nom for the Parks & Rec cast!
Nothing from Jack & Jill? Sandler gets robbed again!
Dude — I know a guy who worked in post for that movie, and he gave me an inside scoop:
Adam Sandler played both Jack AND Jill in that movie! Like the Winklevosses, in Social Network. Dude, when i heard that, I BLEW MY MIND.
Why weren’t Corey Stoll and Alison Pill included in the “Midnight in Paris” cast? Were their roles considered too small? Stoll got an indie spirit award nod for his performance in the film, but not included here?
Ha! Shame didn’t get nominated? Not surprised, with the director’s insistence on the public looking at Fassbender’s privates.
The Oldman oversight is criminally insane.
No Homeland? Seriously? Danes, Lewis, Baccarin, Patinkin . . . best cast on TV.
I was surprised about that too
Would have replaced DiCaprio with Oldman. Eastwood has a hold on Hollywood it seems. Don’t know Bechir’s work, so can’t comment, but it was a surprise. Others were as expected.
Curious as to why the Help was left out of the headline when it got the most nominations.
Dexter for the Ensemble Drama Award? Really? Besides Michael C. Hall nobody on this show gets to do anyhting – this show’s cast is as far away from being an ensemble as tofu is from being meet.
No Community and no Parks and Recreation – saw it coming. Still, it makes me kind of wonder what bias the industry has against these shows.
*I meant to say ‘meat’.
The snubs of ‘Community’ and ‘Parks and Rec’ are embarrassing. I could at least get behind it if they were still nominating decent shows, but they nominated ‘The Office’? Seriously? A show so far past its prime that it shouldn’t even be on the air?
What happened to Gosling and Drive or Albert Brooks’ supporting role in that film or an ensemble nomination for Drive? Loved that film. Wish it hadn’t been marketed as “Fast and Furious”. That marketing team should be axed.
Also, the media keeps saying Angelina Jolie’s film has awards buzz, but so far I haven’t seen any noms for the film from NY, LA or anyone else. It’ll probably get nominated for Golden Globes since they nominated The Tourist for reasons that are still unknown to most of us. Ratings? But what’s the real word on her directorial debut and why is it never mentioned by anyone other than the media? It is being released during awards season so obviously it was hoping for nominations. What happened?
If the SAGs tell us anything, it is that “The Descendents” and “The Help” are now the most plausible Best Picture Oscar contenders. The SAGs have only once not nominated an ensemble cast for a film that has gone on to win Best Picture, 1995 (“Braveheart”).
Big loser this morning: “Hugo”, which was picking up a lot of Best Picture steam.
It’s a shame that ‘Midnight in Paris’ continues to be an afterthought. That’s easily the most memorable movie of the year for me, and clearly a lot of other people… the thing’s STILL playing in theaters while a new piece of Oscar bait seems to crash and burn at the box office every week.
Demian Birchir is amazing in A Better Life. Chris Weitz best work and Chris is the driving force behind making people aware of this special movie. A Better Life is one of the most important films of the year to watch. The message is incredible. Summit please wake up and get behind this.
Where is the Sons of Anarchy cast? AFTRA contract discrimination? The performances are amazing individually and as ensemble. I mean, really…
Why isn’t Jon Hamm included in the Bridesmaids cast?
