EXCLUSIVE: A drama series adaptation of the 2010 Australian feature Animal Kingdom has landed at Showtime, with John Wells executive producing and Jonathan Lisco writing/executive producing. The project, now in development, is a crime drama exploring the tense battle between a criminal family and the police, and the ordinary lives caught in the middle. John Wells Prods and Warner Bros TV are producing, with Lisco, Wells and Andrew Stearn executive producing alongside the movie’s writer-director David Michôd and producer Liz Watts.
Animal Kingdom expands Wells’ relationship with Showtime, where he executive produces drama series Shameless, also an adaptation of a foreign property — the British series of the same name — and also produced by John Wells Prods and WBTV. K-Ville creator Lisco, repped by UTA, has an existing relationship with Wells and WBTV; he is an executive producer on their TNT cop drama Southland.
The 2010 movie was inspired by Melbourne’s infamous Pettingill crime family headed by matriarch Kath Pettingill. Jacki Weaver, who played a fictionalized version of Pettingill, earned a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role. Animal Kingdom premiered in the U.S. at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival where it won the World Cinema Jury Prize. Here is a trailer for those who haven’t seen it:

Such a killer movie… hey, in Showtime’s hands, anything’s possible! Thanks for taking the risk the other shitworks won’t.
Jacki Weaver was fantastic (chilling) as Kath Pettingill.
The movie was fantastic!
Good for Lisco… One of the genuinely great guys in TV.
this show will not suck and i will watch it – thank you showtime for being cool
So will this be set in Australia too?
Shameless is the most underrated show on TV…I can’t believe Macy didn’t get nominated this year. Wells and Showtime are a killer pair. Can’t wait for Animal Kingdom!
Makes no sense at all. The movie was awesome, but this is like making a series out The Prophet. The movie’s mood was half of what made it great and there is no way you can do that kind of mood week in and week out. Leave it alone, and develop something original.
I completely agree.
I tell anyone who will listen how amazing this movie is.
Hope it works out for all involved!
So is this going to be Showtime’s version of The Sopranos? I haven’t seen Animal Kingdom but the concept sounds good. Showtime does a good job finding strong actresses for their series. Very impressed with Claire Danes’ performance on Homeland.
I’m on the fence with this one. The movie was so fucking good, I feel like they should just it alone. But who knows? Could be good. I’d feel more confident if it was HBO, but at least it’s not on a network channel.
Couldn’t you just watch underbelly instead? This has already been done in Australia.
UNDERBELLY is one of the most underwhelming series Australia has ever produced. Seriously, NEIGHBOURS has more dramatic weight, sincerity and production value.
ANIMAL KINGDOM nailed tone and it’s exciting to see it explored in an American context… HOMELAND is the critical and commercial hit of the year. The creatives at Showtime seem ripe to develop this as a major psychological thriller. Can’t wait.
Thank you! Someone who see Underbelly for the nonsense it truly is.
Cast Jacki Weaver or it didn’t happen.
Jacki Weaver was phenomenal as the family patriarch and a well deserved Oscar nom. Showtime shouldn’t cast young; find a terrific actress. Edie Falco as the remarkably complex Carmela Soprano was a centerpiece of most financially successful drama cable has ever produced.
The only issue I have with Showtime making this series is the fact, with a few exceptions, that they copy or remake (or re-imagine,a polite euphemism for rip-off) most of their “original” series that were better in the first place.
