EXCLUSIVE: Emmy-winning helmer Stephen Hopkins has been tapped to direct NBC’s futuristic drama pilot Beautiful People. The project, written by Cougar Town co-executive producer/director/actor Michael McDonald, is set in the near future in a society where humans co-exist with mechanical androids that look like people but are treated like second-class citizens. Beautiful People, which Mad TV alum McDonald originally wrote 10 years ago, is co-produced by ABC Studios and Universal TV. Hopkins has directed the pilots for such series as Fox’s 24, Showtime’s Californication and the network’s upcoming House Of Lies.

Sounds interesting. Definitely not the premise I first thought of when reading the title. lol
I was really worried this would be in the vein of The CW’s The Beautiful Life: TBL (also wouldn’t be surprised if NBC did a show like that). Glad this is completely different and actually sounds kind of interesting.
The best director in the history of “24″ and he was very much missed when he departed after Season 1.
Stephen is a very underrated director. I’m happy to see him doing so many high rpofile TV projects, but would love to see more features out of him.
It sounds similar to HBO’s in-developpment almost sci-fi show about ” “a successful California construction subcontractor, his Asian American wife who is a university professor, and a robot as they straddle both sides of the Pacific with extended families on two continents.”
Fascinating topic. Hope it can survive on network TV. Seems like cable is the place for premises like this now.
