Money.
Looks insufferably long and dull!
Why would anyone build a narrow staircase like that without a railing to keep you from falling to your death?
And where’s the dragon I remember from the cartoon movie?
Not excited…
Smaug might be in the first movie, but maybe only a glimpse. The actor who plays him hasn’t even been to NZ yet to film, so it will be a while before we see a certain fire-breathing dragon.
I really hope you were being sarcastic…you are going to worry about an old and decrepit stair case? Do you see many railings in old castles and battlements? No…moron. And the dragon is in the next movie. If you weren’t a moron, you probably would have noticed they are splitting the Hobbit into two and adding supplementary stuff from Tolkien’s other works of events that were happening at the same time…like the discovery of Sauron. So that dragon will be in the next movie. Anyways, you are clearly still a moron.
Don’t know if your post was sarcasm.. difficult to detect on internet forums..
You do know that ‘The Hobbit’ is a 2 part movie right? Part 1 next December, Part 2 December 2013.
Yeah, there’s more walking. Can’t wait for that, didn’t get enough of that in the first trilogy.
Hopefully this one will help cure my insomnia again like the last 3 did.
if the first 3 movies were boring for you don’t watch this 1. I enjoyed the first 3. Go watch something esle
It Was A Bit Of Let Down.
Watching The Trailer All I Could Think About Was That It Lacked The LOTR Epicness.
For Me It Was Just There. They Made it Because They Thought It was The Time But They Gave It All But Time.
But I Trust Them. Those Guys Made LOTR So I Just Can’t Judge The Movie From A 2 Minute Trailer.
But GOOOOOD I Want That Song…That Was Epic!
Why Is Every Word In Your Comment Capitalized?
Funny how we don’t think before we hit SEND
Is it me or it looks like a bunch of out-takes from The Lord of the Rings? Good to see Howard Shore is back for this one, although I wonder what look would have resulted if Guillermo del Toro had not been “betrayed” by Peter Jackson, who stole his collegaue´s project because presumably he felt he needed a hit after del Toro devoted two years of his life to it… Sad realities of the business, I guess. It look, though, that in the end it may have not been worth it. All in all, and of course this is just an impression based on a trailer, this doesn´t look very enticing. More like a Lord of the Rings light.
Del Toro was not “betrayed”. He left on his own because was never getting a green light because of MGM’s bankruptcy. The same reason we’re not getting another Bond movie until now. Get your facts straight.
What? From everything I’ve heard, GDT left the project because he had other things lined up, and The Hobbit was simply becoming too far off for him to stay in New Zealand another 2-3 years, plus the financial problems with MGM set things back for a while.
As for your other point, The Hobbit is kind of like LotR-lite, because it’s more of a children’s fairytale, rather than a serious war epic like LotR.
Didnt de Toro drop out, out of his own will? After there was the delay relating to MGM’s bankruptcy and the rights to The Hobbit or whatever? Im fairly confused by your post. There were multiple articles about it on here with no mention ever of Jackson stealing project…you forget two that Jackson had also been working on The Hobbit for two years. He and del Toro, along with Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens all cowrote the screenplay. They also started doing much of the development together for creatures/sets/ect so I dont think you can say he stole anything. He dropped out and Jackson took over.
Can’t wait for The Hobbit: The Expected Sequel starring Cashbo Grabbins.
Holy wow. That was fantastic.
You can already chalk that up for $1 billion worldwide gross – minimum!
However the trailer, while good, made me want to watch LOTR all over again rather than rush out and see this…
Holy cow. That was boring.
That was a little underwhelming, and I’m still not sure about Martin Freeman.
Jesus Christ some of you are pessimistic. Or you’ve never been enchanted by Tolkien’s work. How anyone could be disappointed with that while the dwarves are singing “Over the Misty Mountains Cold” is fucking beyond me.
This is brilliant. Certainly beats the shit out of that bore of a Batman trailer.
Can’t wait.
You can write that again!
I especially agree with the “Batman” trailer comment.
It’s not a competition, but if it was, The Dark Knight Rises would shit all over The Hobbit. Check out the Box Office for TDKR next year. Forecast to crush all in its path including little men with hairy feet.
Because box office predictions this far in advance always pan out exactly the way they are predicted. Im not saying The Dark Knight Rises wont make a ton of money, it will, but dont think that The Hobbit wont. Its been 8 years since the last Rings film and this is a book many many people have wanted to see onscreen for a long time (a good version). I wouldnt predict TDKR makes so much more than The Hobbit. The last Rings film made over a billion…if thats any predictor, it will do very very well. (Yes Im aware of how well the last Batman film did as well, though that had other factors contributing to its success than that people just love Batman)
Not that any of this matters, or even means anything considering the ridiculous ticket prices these days, but adjusted to 2010 dollars:
The Return of the King (2003): $1,323,004,684
The Two Towers (2002): $1,114,645,519
The Fellowship of the Ring (2001): $1,074,142,057
The Dark Knight (2008): $1,013,880,764
Batman Begins (2005): $412,513,763
It’s still a hell of a lot of money, and both franchises are amongst the top-grossing in history. But hey, let’s have accuracy here.
This still all good. Tolkienfiles probably need to see the hobbit as a movie because it is an undeniable part of the entire story. So what if we are in familiar territory. This is sstill expected to be good story telling. Seeing Gollum again is worth the ticket.
Jackson, just don’t film the Silmarillion. After the Hobbit, THATS IT.
This looks note-perfect. Go back home to Cynical Street located right in the middle of Wish-I-Could-Direct-Films Junction, you sad Grinchy people. Frodo lives!
meh…very underwhelming and insufferably dull. C’mon Peter Jackson…you can do better we know that.!
That was…awful. It looked like a spoof TV show. Just how bad is Martin Freeman? Is there time to fire him and get a replacement because he’s going to sink this. Totally unconvincing. That one second glimpse of Ian Holm was better than two minuted of Matin “can’t act” Freeman.
Martin Freeman is an excellent actor, and Peter Jackson wouldn’t make this movie without him, I’ve heard. He’s absolutely perfect. But of course, this is from someone who’s actually read the book, and is a fan.
my guess is the reason there was no dragon, etc. is because it’s still in post production? the movie is a year away from release. i wasn’t expecting the finished project in this trailer.
A bit dull and aimless and gave us no idea of what the quest actually is.
Yeah, I hate it too when trailers don’t give me a Cliff Notes version of the whole story including the ending. I’m a dimwit and I hate drama, suspense, and surprises
I feel like a heretic, but… that looked kinda bad. The dwarves’ beards appear to be props from a middle school play, attached to their faces with airplane glue.
looks good to me. but, hey from 2 minutes what can you really tell. Looks better than the rest of the crap they’re calling movies
I am finally excited about this movie….
Not to say I’m not occasionally guilty of this as well, but the level of venom on this site is just depressing. This is a follow-up to one of the most successful movie trilogies ever. Loads of LOTR fans wanted to see it made. And it delivers about what you’d expect from the Hobbit. Sure there’s no dragon – it’s a fucking first trailer.
Go home and work on your masterpiece screenplay you selfish, miserable people.
PS, Jackson stole nothing from Guillermo. New Line stole this movie from Jackson, then gave it to del Toro (with Jackson still heavily involved) then finally resolved their differences and let the driving force of the LOTR saga take back his rightful spot. Anyone else influencing this franchise would be a shame.
I have to agree with you. I don’t know what trailer some of these others were watching, but I was locked into every second of it. I can’t wait to see it. It looks fantastic. I’m so glad they are doing it and with the same team that did LOTRs!
Bilbo Lives!
That’s typically why I avoid Deadline comments section. It has more negativity than the Aint It Cool News talkback. That says a lot.
If memory serves me right, The hobbits was a children’s book. And it wasn’t an epic. This trailer is probably the best reflection of it.
The Hobbit is not Lord of the Rings. It’s lighter, more comical with a much shorter, condensed plot. This trailer sets up the mood perfectly. I just don’t see how splitting this into two films could be a good idea, that’s my only hang up.
Will shatter every box office record. Sorry Avatar.
Avatar is quite safe and so are the box office records.
The Hobbit will make money…but, it won’t set any records.
Another Global smash ! Lord of the rings outtakes ? That’s hilarious considering Hobbit was the first story (and best book of the LOTR series). Haters need to stop…this isn’t Twilight
Ha! Now you how it feels to be a Twilighter.
Looks great, with a year to go until release. By reading the comments, it seem lots of people are bitter or just looking to bad-mouth the movie. Is Sam serious by commenting on a dangerous staircase in a fantasy movie in a mythical land?
