EXCLUSIVE: In David E. Kelley’s first foray into cable, TNT has given a pilot order to a new medical drama from The Practice creator and CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Kelley wrote the script for the project, tentatively titled Chelsea General, based on Gupta’s upcoming novel Monday Mornings. Kelley and Gupta, who is a practicing neurosurgeon, are executive producing. “Chelsea General promises to be a smart, witty and extremely powerful medical drama, the kind of series David E. Kelley is renowned for making,” said Michael Wright, EVP and head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies. “We look forward to working with David and Sanjay in bringing the doctors’ fascinating stories and characters to television.”
Set to be published in March 2012, Gupta’s Monday Mornings is set at Chelsea General and follows the lives of five surgeons as they push the limits of their abilities and confront their personal and professional failings. The book uses as its backdrop the hospital’s Monday Morbidity and Mortality conference, considered the most secretive meeting in all of medicine, where doctors gather for a confidential review of complications and errors in patient care. The book takes a look at how surgeons come to terms with mistakes and try to learn from them.
Chelsea General is Kelley’s first project as a free agent. The Emmy-winning writer-producer opted not to renew his overall deal at Warner Bros. TV in May so he can pursue passion projects in different areas, including cable. This marks Kelley’s return to the medical genre 17 years after he created CBS’ Chicago Hope. Kelley, repped by WME and attorney Michael Gendler, continues to executive produce his NBC/WBTV sophomore legal dramedy Harry’s Law, which recently received a full-season order.
Chelsea General joins two other recent pilot orders from TNT, Western Gateway from Warner Horizon and search-and-rescue procedural Scent of the Missing from CBS TV Studios.

Two of the very best in their professions. Finally, a show written and produced by smart, engaged and hard working people. Kelley and Gupta, I will be watching.
Perhaps the great David Kelley should take over the T.V. series
“House”. He’ll have an unbelievably fantastic actor to work with.
Hugh Laurie. “House” is dying out there. The writers have gone to sleep. This season is awful and I love House. The new cast is terrible.
Like many others, I am anxiously looking forward to watching this new medical series. With these two gentlemen, there is no doubt that it will be well received.
Cool! Love David E. K. ‘s shows !!!!!
I watched every Kelley show including Wonder Woman. Best writer on TV.
“The great David E. Kelley”?
Let’s do the time warp again!
David E. Kelley — that’s a blast from the past. He should get into half hour comedies for cable!
TNT… “We know procedurals…”
Finally! A medical drama!
Ha! Good point. Question is, are we mad at the networks for producing this never ending parade of medical and legal and forensic shows… or at the audience for watching them?
Because it really is getting stupid now.
No more medical procedurals, thank you.
Once again, the same old tired ideas and auspices. How many times does DEK get a chance to do the same show? And Sanjay Gupta’s involvement will do nothing to impact the show. TNT wants to be CBS and Michal Wright has watched Jeff Wachtel do it first. Can’t we do better?
The difference is that Gupta is actually a very smart guy and Kelley a terrific writer. This will be an outstanding show.
This is a stupid title since there’s already 2 shows on cable called Chelsea and a third about to hit network. Guess what they have in common? Chelsea Handler. Change the name now TNT – while it’s cheap.
What happened to DEK?
There was a time… not so long ago… when that name meant quality. And originality… a fresh take.
Now it just means… meh.
Can’t wait to see Tricia Helfer and Summer Glau in “Scent of the Missing”; i hope it will be picked up as a serie by TNT, Summer Glau is a talented and underrated actress.
kelley and gupta? – should be quite a joust… what will be be called “Medical M.E.”
