HBO has released the first teaser for its upcoming film Game Change, which follows John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign from his selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate to their ultimate defeat in the general election. The trailer showcases Julianne Moore as Palin, Ed Harris as McCain and Woody Harrelson as McCain adviser Steve Schmidt as they search for a vice presidential candidate that would help thwart Barack Obama’s momentum — and culminates with the big coming-out party for Palin at the Republican National Convention. Game Change, produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone, directed by Jay Roach and written by Danny Strong, premieres in March. The movie will not be as controversial as it would’ve been had Palin decided to run for president next year.

Does anyone know if the screenplay rakes Elizabeth Edwards over the coals the same way the book does? (I’m not advocating for this by the way. I think the film would be wise to let the woman rest in peace – just curious.)
McCain/Palin. Those are the only two featured. No one else.
I’m hugely disappointed that the movie is going to focus — so much on the McCain/Palin campaign.
The best part of the book was the Edwards affair and Elizabeth Edwards.
There was so much material to work with and HBO gets such a high caliber of actors for these projects that they should have done it as a 4-part mini-series.
Who is playing Barack Obama? Axelrod? Etc?
From the trailer, and the cast list on IMDB, it looks like this version of Game Change is focused on a portion of the book — the McCain/Palin campaign.
From what I hear, the book mainly focuses on the McCain/Palin campaign, so the movie just sticks to that. Barack is apparently just shown in news clips.
The book was based on the entire election. McCain/Palin was only a small portion at the end. The big part was Hillary vs Obama vs Edwards. Which is the more backstabbing story that should have been made.
Can Woody say “game changer” one more time in the trailer?
Thanks!
Looks like the equivalent of acting karaoke.
one of the best comments ever…
so right.
Tina Fey would’ve made this a great comedy!
Woah, props to casting / makeup
While I think Fey’s Palin is spot on Julianne and Harris look amazing in there roles here.
The real insult is that Moore is to old for the part…..and not as pretty. The few people who watch this drek may think to themselves, DAM! I should have voted for McCain! Obama is a failure!! Palin would be a better VP then Biden, who has hairplugs bleached teeth and a fake tan….and is nutz.
Moore is just four years older than Palin.
Makeup, possible plastic surgery & just taking care of yourself easily covers up that minor age difference.
Hit job against conservatives. Blow job for liberals.
I will say this: it would be cheaper just to get a “rent boy” like all those family values guys do.
Who is really the audience for this film at this point? The books out and done. Is it really going to illuminate anything that is really relevant or hasn’t been explored or exploited every single night on either Cable TV editorial programs or comedy-news shows? I’d say a rare surprise miss for HBO who is usually more out front on these kind of things… This makes them seem as behind the curve as the theatrical movie makers when it comes to political films.
They got this entirely wrong. They made it look like a gimmick, a freak show, a “serious” SNL skit rather than show Julianne Moore, an extraordinary actor, doing something more than a so-so impression of Palin. They communicated the lack of depth to the project, rather than making us think there might be something more to it.
Listen to the soundtrack.
It’s not like “The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down” is playing underneath!
Maybe the real reason this looks lousy is that Julianne Moore is not an “extraordinary actor.” She’s fair and sometimes downright awful (“The Kids Are All Right” anyone? Hey, look, I’m acting like a lesbian! All rough and slangy and all!) I liked her work in the beginning, that ‘Who IS that?’ reaction to the Uncle Vanya thing, but she’s become almost unbearably self-conscious. And Tina Fey’s perfect mimicry of Palin is going to make this even worse.
Julianne Moore has four Academy Award nominations, 3 BAFTA nominations and countless other critic and festival nominations and awards. If she’s fair to awful, then every actress should strive to be that bad.
If you haven’t seen Moore in Magnolia, Boogie Nights, and End of the Affair, you clearly can’t conceptualize her artistry. A brilliant actress, and deserving of every accolade.
You’ve made my point. Every film you’ve cited is an older one, not recent. She hasn’t shown much depth for years. She was forced and ridiculous in “A Single Man”, embarrassing in “The Kids Are All Right.” The “conceptualize her artistry” thing made me laugh out loud, by the way, so thanks for that.
Excuse me but she did NOT act “all rough and slangy” in the least. Hate all you want but maybe you aught to look at the film again to get your facts straight.
HBO?
Really!?!
That thing looks like it would do Monster BO.
People would pay money to both love it and hate it!
Movies about politics almost never make money at the box office.
ugh. please shes had way too much time in the public eye. can’t we let her die somewhere
A little too late for HBO on this one. Palin is beyond irrelevant.
Is this movie following the book completely? Half the book was based on Edwards vs Obama vs Hillary. Which was more important then the Palin/Cain aspect which came at the end. I hope they bring up the Edwards affair, and what about me. Joe the Plumber.
Sarah Palin is no longer really relevant. She sits from the sidelines, doing pretty much nothing (unless you count bitching about everyone else while giving no solutions of her own). She’s not a public servant, and from her failed “documentary” to Todd’s rejected reality show, it’s pretty evident the public has had enough. I love most HBO programming but I’ll be passing on this one. And Alex, you may want to get out of your fox news bubble or wherever it is you’ve been spending time lately to be so out of touch with your fellow Americans. No matter how disappointed one may be with President Obama, the prospect of Sarah Palin being anywhere near the White House is far, far more unappealing.
What is the point of this exercise? To dredge up all the bullshit antipathy we all went through four years ago? Who needs it? We’re going through it in real life right now.
I read the book. I love the book. It would have made a great miniseries. The main characters are Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, David Axelrod, John Edwards, Elizabeth Edwards, THEN John McCain, and then Sarah Palin. The McCain/Palin storyline is at most one third of the book. This movie’s sole purpose seems to have hinged on Palin running for president, so they could use this movie to take her down. If they’d done the whole book, it would have been fascinating. But no, they turned into a partisan hit piece by only telling the GOP thread, the boring thread from 2008.
What? Partisan? HBO? “from the writer-director of ‘Recount?’” You don’t say.
HBO, I look forward to your Fast and the Furious scandal pic. JIC, tho, I’m not holding my breath.
Ed Harris always looks like he chews worms for breakfast and Woody Harrelson may actually do that on the marijuana farm. Do the Golden Raspberries give awards for TV movies?
The whole story could make a good movie. McCain the vainglorious scold who can’t give a decent speech picks Palin as a way to energize his half-baked, “I’m a great war hero” campaign. She steals the spotlight because she’s pretty, poised on camera, and gives a great speech. McCain fumes and is jealous. Steve Schultz, McCain’s minion, undermines her at every turn. The media slanders and trashes her, turning her into a martyr figure. McCain loses, then sticks Palin with the enormous bill for her original vetting, which then drives Palin to resign the governorship so she can go make some money in the hopes of paying it off. She ends up a bigger force (and wealthier) than she ever would have been as governor of Alaska. It reminds me of A Star Is Born.
