Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage.
At today’s contentious TCA panel on 2 Broke Girls, creator/executive producer Michael Patrick King defended the comedy against continuing criticism that it traffics in ethnic stereotypes. The heated exchanges left King disappointed by the end of the session, when he said he arrived thinking the panel was going to be fun. As when the show came on the air, the questions mostly centered on Asian character Han Lee (Matthew Moy). “I’m gay. We put in gay stereotypes — I don’t get offended by any of this,” said the producer during the panel with stars Kat Denning and Beth Behrs. “I find it comic to take everybody down.” A questioner weren’t going to let him off that easily, asking if being part of a marginalized group gives one license to stereotype others. King shot back: “I would say it’s about being a comedy writer. It gives you permission to be an outsider and poke fun at what people think about other people.” King bristled at further questions about whether CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler had specifically asked King to “dimensionalize” characters beyond the stereotypes. When pressed, King acknowledged Tassler had used the word “dimensionalize” but said: “The characters are dimensional. And they are seen in segments of 21 minutes; you are limited in the amount of dimension you can see.” To his questioner, he added heatedly: “I will call you in five years” to see if the critic would find the characters fleshed out.” While denying the overuse of ethnic stereotypes, King did say he was proud that after the first three episodes of the series, the Han Lee character has only been the butt of short jokes, not Asian jokes.
King was also called upon to defend the show’s broad humor — it has become known as the show that loves the word “vagina.” “Our show is a big, ballsy comedy, but it has a bigger heart than it has balls,” he said. Asked whether “ballsy” humor is appropriate for an 8:30 PM show, King said: “Let me correct you, the question is, is it appropriate to 8:30 on CBS in 2012? 8:30 on CBS in 1994” would be a different story, he continued. He added: “I consider our jokes classy-dirty, highbrow-lowbrow. If the show existed only in naughty jokes without pathos, I would be unhappy.”
After the session, King said he was surprised by the criticism. “I came here thinking it was going to be a blast — about fun, not this skewed viewpoint,” he said.

The reporter is so wrong to be taking this shit so seriously. It’s a sitcom. Sitcoms thrive on stereotypes. If he wants to stand there and ask why the show isn’t good, I would understand that but it’s a sitcom guy, relax
Here in NY, we are mourning the murder of solider Danny Chen, who committed suicide in Afghanistan. He was abused so viciously abused.
At a time where you can’t go a minute without some whining about bullying, it’s funny how Nina Tassler is a complete coward. I’d like to see her allow the same jokes about blacks. Nina, I hope we meet, so I can give you a piece of my mind. You are spineless.
You need to look a little more into the case of Danny Chen. His family disowned him before he joined the Army. Apparently he was a failure in their eyes and joined the Army thinking it would solve everything. It did not. Obviously he had mental issues. Yes it is sad he died, but it had nothing to do with this moronic sitcom, or the Army. His family should have been more supportive and got him the help he needed.
I like the show and I hate the writing for Han Lee – the Asian charactor. It’s offensive.
*character (typos offend me too… LOL!)
Sitcom employs stereotypes, news at 11.
People ought to be objecting because the show is not funny. There is no cleverness in the show at all, and no appreciable humor. It substitutes the “shock” of saying “vagina” instead of making an actual joke. It is weak.
THIS. I don’t get how this show is a hit. People are idiots, I suppose.
I agree. Broad comedy to me is trying to hard to get a laugh. It is not clever at all.
Honestly, it sounds like they let MPK off the hook by only focusing on the ridiculous racial stereotypes, and not how the show is terrible.
The lady doth protest too much, methinks. They are legitimate inquiries. If you want ‘fun’ press questions, hang out at The Grove.
Those ‘questioners’ need to chill out. It’s a comedy aimed at an adult audience. We can handle it, thank you.
It also helps if the “adults” have no taste.
Clearly, the critics have not met this generation’s young women. The majority of single girls I’ve met in their 20s only talk about their vaginas and love making fun of those around them. The show is perfect as it is.
Sorry to be obvious, but you really need to meet a better class of women. Here’s a clue: If her idea of a drink is a tequila shot, time to grow up.
My wife is a 37 year old pediatrician, who spent six years working with Doctors Without Borders, and now runs two non-profit clinics. Her favorite drink: shots of Patron Anejo.
Here’s a clue: if you think being a “classy adult” requires acting like a judgmental prick, you don’t have a clue.
Um, Cash, it was kindof, you know, a joke. Maybe you oughta do a few more shots with your wife.
Exactly. Girls are crude these days. Who cares?
The only reason that people might be offended is because the show airs on CBS, a network with an average viewer age of 150.
Personally I stopped watching early on because it was so unfunny and repetitive, not because I was offended that the main characters were saying “vagina.”
It’s age-appropriate for adults, however, it may not be language for young viewers. Now… let’s challenge the writers to use their imagination when it comes to being creative in communicating adult thoughts in humorous descriptions & delivery. Like saying buttocks (remember GUMP) instead of ass, or veggie instead of vagina, etc. As you can tell, I’m not a writer but I am a fan of comedy. Have a little fun and… let’s see some ‘creative’ writing out there. LOL
Interesting. He stopped making Asian jokes but now makes short jokes. Yet, the Han character is still a tired stereotype.
Take a cue from “Entourage”. Lloyd as both gay and Asian but portrayed with far more dignity and strength.
Other than that, I like the show for what it is. It’s called a sense of humor. I can laugh at “2 Broke Girls and “Two and a Half Men” just as easily as I can “Modern Family” and “30 Rock”. I take them for what they are and watch them accordingly.
This is the first comedy in 10 years that I find funny. There are no crewed fart/belch/bodily function jokes. Kat Dennings character says everything I with I could have said the customers at my retail job.
i like the show. it’s throwaway but the two leads are likeable and have good timing and although not laureate stuff, the writing and dialogue at least flow enough to keep me amused. i tried watching big bang theory… again… and seeing the mugging going on as the ensemble just waited in turn for each of their laboured punchlines wore me out.
if people are looking to be offended they will be. by anything, not just a TV show character. it’s a side-effect of the victimhood syndrome that so many have in hollywood and in society as a whole.
if the show offends everyone (like south park) then it’s all relative, correct?
like it or not this is far and away the most successful new comedy of the season. it’s going to be on for awhile, so if you’re easily offended turn the channel………..NOW
The. Worst. Show. I’ve. Ever. Watched. I can’t understand who generates its numbers, or why.
Someone didn’t watch Work It…
I don’t mind the short jokes or the Asian jokes related to Han’s character. I write offensive shit all the time, but to have the “Asian accent” is just small minded. No pun intended. But what do I know. Only middled aged white men know how real minorities are.
After watching Two and Half Men and being appalled by the dick and ball jokes, my friend and I watched this show and laughed, but noticed the entire episode was about a tampon. Wondered if guys would be as appalled as we were at Two and A Half Men? On 2 Broke Girls (or “Laverne & Shirley 2.0) I think the writing is fun. the asian/short jokes are too much, the characters are great, though the acting feels like a lot of “announcing” at each other.
I find the show one of the best comedies on the air in this country. Han’s character is meant to be funny and it plays on asian ethnicticity, so what. It is not done in a cruel manner and Matthew does a tremendous job with his character. As for language, grow up America and catch up with the rest of the world.
The show is funny, the characters and their actors are wonderful, the writing is superb; what more could you ask for in a comedy or any show for that matter. Many kudos to Michael King and his refreshing creations. May it have a long life.
I don’t even know where to begin with how obnoxious and unwatchable I find 2 Broke Girls. I am not easily offended but the characters are dislikeable, go for every cheap, lame, NOT FUNNY sex joke. The episode where Kat Dennings was teaching the other one to bake Xmas cookies and the batter got on them and she said “Christmas came early- all over me.” REALLY?! Gross. Watch Bridesmaids for crude-ish humor done right. I hope MPK heard what the critics were saying- though if it was as overwhelming as it seems i doubt he will.
If it’s so unwatchable, why do you watch it enough to site specific episodes? It’s amazing that the haters on here hate the show but instead of turning it off complain how it should be ‘improved’.
People, life is short, lose the hate, change the channel and seek out something you enjoy… and allow those who enjoy something to enjoy it without having their taste criticized.
I love how the only person saying positive things about the show is the personal assistant to one of the actors.
It’s about being a lazy comedy writer. There are many hilarious TV comedies that survive quite nicely without broad insult humor. Maybe he should check them out.
Um, he is not listed as the creator of either of those shows.
MPK didn’t create either of those shows, Lea. He barely created this one. And you may enjoy 2 Broke Girls, but the humor doesn’t even approach sophisticated. Also, being nominated for a Peoples Choice Award? That’s tantamount to creating a show and being nominated for a “Your Mom’s Favorite Show” Award. That being said, if you like it? Enjoy. Comedy’s very hard and very subjective.
I love the show and the fact that is pushes the envelope. The beauty of this Country is that if it offends you, you can change the channel and watch something else.
I hope the TCA questions did not stop with the asian character. it’s very sad to see garrett morris reduced to such a ridiculous caricature of a black man.
Betcha Garrett Morris is happy to have the job, but if his character disappeared tomorrow it would be fine with me.
The Asian guy is funny and likable.
I enjoy seeing so many people watching a show they find offensive. It gives me hope that it will be renewed. Thank you for your support.
anyone who personally knows MPK knows he has a crude, zany sense of humor. he’s writing from the heart. funny show. not the funniest but i like it and LOVE him as a person
This show is funny and such a relief from ALL the reality tv crap out there. We need more “comedy shows” and get rid of the reality tv……..
I like the show, but as an Asian American it’s pretty disappointing that the only way an Asian can make it onto a comedy is with a horrendous accent like Han’s.
I have watched this show several times with the hopes of finally laughing or at best smiling.. i have not nor will I ever.
Is the word “vagina” that funny and i’m just not getting it??? Is a short, gay Asian man running
around in a tizzy…funny? Is a older black man mumbling words…funny? How about the sleazy
sweaty cook in the kitchen…funny?
I usually find Michael Patrick King’s writing to be sophisticated and amusing.
Forget crude. forget hackneyed stereotypes. It’s just not funny.
To me.
The show is dirty, lowbrow and depends only on naughty jokes. It is not funny and Mr. King should be unhappy. It seemed the only reason to have the horse on the show was for horse manure jokes. That also was not funny. This show,
The way jokes on this show work — and the stated views of both the network and showrunner, to shock — I’m shocked that one of the “tender, sweet, caring, honest, real, deep moments” hasn’t been the girls having sex with Chestnut….
