Following the success of freshman Once Upon a Time, Disney-owned ABC is staying in a fairytale mode with a pilot order to Beauty and the Beast. Written by Jericho co-creator Jonathan E. Steinberg, the drama project is described as is a period/fantastical reimagining of the classic fairy tale set in a mythical, dangerous world wherein a beautiful and tough Princess discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast. It is eyed as a potential companion for Once Upon A Time in the Sunday 9 PM slot. Both Once Upon A Time and Beauty And The Beast feature characters from classic Disney movies, including Snow White, Prince Charming, Belle and the Beast. Steinberg is executive producing Beauty and the Beast with Mojo Films’ Gary Fleder and Mary Beth Basile for ABC Studios. ABC’s pilot is not to be confused with the CW’s recently greenlighted Beauty And The Beast pilot, which is a reboot of the 1980s series starring Linda Hamilton. WME-repped Steinberg most recently developed the Fox series Human Target based on the comic book.

This sounds like a much more interesting take than The CW’s planned reboot of the 80′s version. Casting will be really interesting…
Looks interesting. FOX should have left Human Target alone and not not have turned into an recognizable series in the second season, that is what killed the show.
ABC has learned I think with Once Upon A Time to trust a bit more, those who bring their series to life.
OK, counting the Linda Hamilton version… Did we really need… THREE Beauty and the Beast series?
How many times can we retell the story.
I loved the ’80s version. I was in middle school and used to watch it every Friday night with a nice fresh bag of Cool Ranch Doritos.
Good times.
haha
I agree. If they find an actor as good as Ron Perlman to play the beast and an actress as genuine as Linda Hamilton, along with the original creators of the 80′s show to work there magic then the remake cannot be competed with. Anything else with the title will be trampled on. The 80′s show was so good with it’s Oscar worthy writing and great production values that it was even better than the Disney movie.
However, the CW has to make the show a priority and give it a bigger budget which may not happen… It would have been better if HBO had done the Linda Hamilton/Ron Perlman remake so that it could get the care it needs!
Why? Why do we need 2 hours of fairytales? I don’t understand. I really don’t.
I’m sorry, but comments like this annoy me. I’m not really a fan of this genre, and clearly neither are you, but I still find it interesting that the networks would be ordering something like this. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean there isn’t an audience for it on TV. I’m sorry that two fairytale shows is too much for you… I guess you also have an issue with medical, cop, and family drama shows too, right? Eyeroll.
Let Chewbacca and Leia be beauty and the beast (I’m not sure in which order) and I’m sold!!!!!
Put the fanfic down and back away slowly from teh internets…
I really hope ABC puts The Hulk pilot to order. but with all the high concept stuff the have already ordered I will not hold my breath.
But will there be singing dishes?
Okay ABC calm down on the fucking fairy tales already. DAMN!
They won’t calm down because guess what, it’s one of the few things that are working for ABC, after all what better company to produce fairy tales than Disney/ABC, it sure as hell wouldn’t be CBS all they know is crime/cop/lawyer.
Yes, they’re probably kicking themselves that they don’t have Grimm in the stable.
I do not understand why Marvel has such a hard time with TV, while DC pumps out pilots left and right and just had a successful show on for 10 years! Even DC shows like Human Target at least last 2 seasons, but Marvel can’t get anything to pilot much less actually on the air. Then the entire situation flip-flops when it comes to movies. I just don’t get it.
Tale as old as time…..
@ pepper I think Marvel is waiting for the right time. the other issues is control over characters. A Marvel TV show would presumably have characters from all over the Marvel universe, with FOX rights to the Fantastic 4, Daredevil, and the X-Men it questionable whether such characters would require permission from FOX to use. That for me is the best reason for why Marvel is having such a tough time, but it should be noted that FOX has picked up The Punisher for a pilot so that is hopefully one marvel tv show we will hopefully see soon.
The success of live action shows such as Smallville is debatable especially given the backlash to the show from many ‘purist’ superman fans.
Now on to Beauty and the Beast. This could be an epic show, I love that ABC is looking outside the typical procedural hospital/lawyer/cop shows.
The rights issue may play a part, but Marvel keeps trying and failing to get anything to pilot, while DC is just cruising along with Wonder Woman pilot, Green Arrow, Deadman, Blue Beetle. And that’s just off the top of my head. I know there is more I’m forgetting about. Meanwhile, I haven’t heard anything about She Hulk or Cloak and Dagger for eons. Mystifying and frustrating.
Smallville was super successful. Debating it is comical to me. Warner TV has publicly stated that it is their best home video grosser OF ALL TIME. Seriously, out of their huge vault of shows, Smallville was the one raking in all the cash. The only “backlash” is from those few fanboys who carp at Star Wars, Avatar, and everything else successful under the sun. They are that tiny group that loves harassing Lucas and complaining and whining loudly and being sarky. They enjoy being bitter about popular stuff. Even though I’m a geek too, I just have to laugh at them. Those guys PMS and bellyache more than any teen girl. LOL.
Smallville had 10 seasons of course it is going to be high grosser for Warner especially after they slash the prices and sell the seasons at an incredibly low price. I just hope that when Marvel finally gets around to TV shows that they make a show for the comic fans and tv show fans, and do not cater to one fan-base over the other the way Smallville did.
What you are talking about?! Smallville has always been priced at a premium relative to all the other series I buy. I complain about this every year as I buy the hubby his Christmas gifts. The only thing that costs as much are the Star Trek dvds. Everything else I buy costs about half of what those two series cost me.
Clearly we shop at different stores. I have seen Smallville Seasons marked at $15, that is cheap. Bottom line I Marvel will hopefully start coming with TV shows for prime-time soon. By taking there time I hope they are making a show that will do justice for the Marvel characters. Mark my words if I ever see I spider-man show that goes the way of Smallville with making Peter a nerd who is not really a nerd because he looks like a model, making Gwen Stacey a pretty face with no substance, making Mary-Jane a hack actress/model who sleeps, lies, and steals her way to the top, or introducing a dues-ex-machina in the vain of Chloe (and i actually like chloe in the early seasons!) then I will be a very unhappy Marvel fan.
OUAT is already formulaic and winding down.
Angela Landsbury or it didn’t happen.
Wonderful, a series about a girl who under the control of an abusive man develops Stockholm Syndrome!
I’ll watch if they get George RR Martin to write for it again.
I am NOT happy that CW is ATTEMPTING to redo my fav TV series of all time..considering how badly they screwed up the “Vampire Diaries” when bringing it from page to tv I’m sure they will turn BatB into a fubar as well…will at least check out the ABC version of my fav fairy tale….
Jon Steinberg has the goods to make this a great show. Jericho was spectacular, and Human Target was a blast in the first season. I think Fox meddled too much in the second when most of the writing staff was canned.
I’m thrilled about this announcement! Jon Steinberg = great TV, and his take on this story sounds fresh and worth investing in.
