ABC has started giving pilot orders to its starring comedy vehicles. First off is single-camera comedy American Judy toplined by Judy Greer and written by Deborah Kaplan & Harry Elfont. It centers on a cosmopolitan woman (Greer) who gets married and becomes a fish out of water in the suburbs having to juggle step-kids, her mother-in-law, and the ex-wife of her husband who also happens to be the town sheriff. The project is inspired by Greer’s life, where she moved from Los Angeles for the man she loves and found herself raising stepchildren and making new friends in a small suburban town. ABC Studios is producing, with Greer producing and and Principato-Young’s David Gardner, Peter Principato and Paul Young executive producing alongside Kaplan and Elfont. ABC has a slew of other half-hour projects with stars attached that are awaiting word, including Kevin Abbott’s Reba McEntire comedy, Diane English’s Jim Belushi sitcom and the Bob Fisher/Shawn Levy comedy starring Mandy Moore, which have big commitments, and projects starring Ashley Tisdale, Jeff Garlin, Jim Breuer, Romeo Santos, Marlon Wayans and Craig Kilborn. Greer has been recurring on Two And A Half Men and co-stars in The Descendants.

How can one not be happy for Judy Greer? She’s super talented and seems very unaffected.
Judy is a huge talent. Congratulations to everyone involved. Worth noting the producers of this show have mandated to catering that no take out boxes will be tolerated at meals or craft services. Same for mushrooms, unless from Benihana, nor lettuce, unless it is shredded and placed atop a taco. All foods which come directly out of a can are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The last thing this planet needs: Another Jim Belushi show.
How will this work with her schedule on Archer and more importantly the limited season/feature length movie Arrested Development?
Deb and Harry are the worst writers in showbiz. Judy is funny but no one outside of NY or LA cares about her. She is a “best friend,” not the lead. Crash and burn.
Greer is also killing it with impunity on FX’s ARCHER (maybe the funniest show on TV right now).
I concur. Archer is best laugh out loud tv comedy in years- much better than Modern Family & Parks & Recreation.
ABC is on a comedy garbage bender, following up on last year’s ridiculously stupid pickups like Work It and Last Man Standing.
Can we just admit once and for all that Paul Lee has bad taste in comedy?
(Note: I haven’t read this one yet so excuse me if it’s great, but I have read everything else they’ve picked up so far and overall the word has to be ‘debacle.’)

I hate to admit it because Paul Lee seems like a smart and decent person, but you may be right that his taste in comedy is iffy. His comedy track record at ABC Family was wildly uneven.

I like Judy Greer, but she has no charisma and no starpower. I don’t expect success from this program.
Rooting for Judy to succeed. She’s talented, and she shouldn’t always be relegated to the “best friend” role.
I just finished reading this pilot. Honestly, it’s the best comedy pilot I’ve read since Modern Family. ABC is gonna have a huge hit on their hands and I couldn’t be happier for Judy Greer.
I just hope she can find time in between shooting this to reprise her role as Kitty on Arrested Development.

Like Judy Greer but the outlandish premise sounds contrived, dumb and not “must watch” comedy.
Then again, trash like 2 Broke Girls was a smash hit when I thought people would only be mildly interested in seeing what it was about before making it die.
With all due respect to Judy Greer and her dedicated cult of fans and bloggers, I hope this show succeeds in part because I’m so sick of hearing about how great she is. Hopefully, this or the next project will give her a chance to prove that to a broader audience. (For the record, I like her just fine. I’m merely a little perplexed by the vocal passion of her fan base.)
Best of luck to Ms. Greer. While she does excel at playing the ‘best friend’ role she can carry a show. She is very talented and hopefully both the writing and supporting cast are up to the task of making it work.
