ABC has given the pilot green light to Gilded Lillys, a period drama written/executive produced by The Nine co-creator KJ Steinberg and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes. Set in 1895 New York City, Gilded Lillys is described as an epic love story that follows the opening of the first luxury hotel in the city and the intermingling of love, treachery and disdain between the classes. The project, from ABC Studios and Rhimes’ studio-based Shondaland, was one of ABC’s first buys in August and is now among the network’s first pilot pickups. It follows the orders to Roland Emmerich’s metaphysical drama and Shawn Ryan/Karl Gajdusek’s Last Resort. Steinberg, who spent four seasons on Gossip Girl as co-executive producer, made a two-script deal at ABC Studios at the beginning of this season. Her other project under the pact, Mistresses, is still in contention for a pilot pickup at ABC. Rhimes, who is executive producing Gilded Lillys with Steinberg and Betsy Beers, sold a slew of projects through Shondaland this season. Her next ABC series, drama Scandal, launches in April. It was the first pilot to get the green light last pilot season.

They should have named it Downtown Abbey.
It actually sounds interesting. I’m not sure how a period piece is going to do on network television but I think with an engaging storyline and interesting characters we want to route for this show has a lot of potential.
Look, say what you will about Rhimes but she’s managed to carve out every screenwriters dream! Best of luck to all involved.
If they called it that, then it would have to have some class & wit.
*snort!*
Am certain they would have if the could have.
Soon, they’ll refer to ABC as the Shonda Rhimes network.
Good for KJ. She’s good people.
This sounds horrific. WOW.
Soo bored with network TV.
Go AMC, SHOWTIME, HBO, sometimes TNT…….
Same writers every season get all the orders. Failing up in Hollywood, typical.
Wait until NBC lays a big turd again this upcoming year. How will Jennifer Nicholson Salke’s big contract look then????
Sad to say, but Shonda does what ABC needs. They’ve basically rebranded themselves as the network for women. So Shonda gets to remake GREY’S ANATOMY as many times as she wants.
same with CBS and police procedurals. People will probably cry foul when they greenlight CSI: RIO DE JIONARO, but will anyone really be surprised?
That said, LAST RESORT sounds badass. Come on, please be good.
TNT? Really, dude?
I’d much prefer CSI: Rio de Janeiro.
Another silly concept for a network TV show. Give up on te period stuff and write a good character instead. 1895? You’ve got to be kidding.
Knowing K.J. this is sure to be intriguing and fanciful–I think it’s just what network TV needs — instead of the same old formulaic junk.
Souds like a reBOOT of love boat, dynasty, fantasy island and Hotel with a Greys anatomy Dancing with the stars kind of feel. In other words more ABC Crap, period.
