At ABC’s TCA executive session, president Paul Lee announced that new midseason comedy Don’t Trust The B—- In Apartment 23 will launch on April 11 on Wednesday after Modern Family. Shonda Rhimes’ new drama Scandal will also premiere April 5 in the post-Grey’s Anatomy Thursday 10 PM slot. “We are using our No. 1 drama to push the launch of Scandal, and we are
using our No. 1 comedy to push the launch of Don’t Trust The B—,” Lee said. Don’t Trust will succeed Happy Endings, which will have ended its sophomore run, while Scandal will take over Private Practice, which will get a four-week trial after Dancing With The Stars. There is still no slot for Cougar Town, through Lee hinted that they “have an idea” where the third-year comedy will go. Its tentative return date is in March. “I think when we launch it, we’ll bring a big strong message that we love that show,” Lee said. As for Cougar Town‘s long-term prospects, Lee said it factors into a “dream” he has about one day bringing together the “group of young irreverent comedies” the network has in Happy Endings, Cougar Town and the upcoming Apartment 23. Back in May, ABC announced plans to extend its new Tuesday 8-9 PM comedy block to 10 PM between the two cycles of Dancing With The Stars, with Cougar Town and Apartment 23 taking over the Dancing result show. But the network dropped the plan following the breakout success of Fox’s New Girl in the Tuesday 9 PM slot, Lee said after the panel. Lee also talked about ABC’s strategy of staggering its fall and midseason launches. “Maybe I’m slightly in the cable model, but my job is not to launch a week’s television, my job is to bring great television and spend a year launching it.”
Other highlights from ABC’s executive session:
Lee’s opening line: “What do you think of Work It?” Surprisingly, the cross-dressing comedy, which became such a lightening rod during Lee’s TCA last summer was barely touched upon this time. Lee was asked again about his rational behind picking up the low-brow comedy, which clashes with the network’s brand of sophisticated shows. “I thought that there was room for ambitious, sticky shows like Revenge and Scandal and smart shows like Suburgatory. And I thought that there was room for a very, very, very silly show like Work It.” As for the campaign waged by some LGBT advocacy groups claiming that the comedy was offensive to transgender people, “I don’t find it to be offensive, I didn’t get it,” Lee said.
ABC is mounting a big push for midseason horror drama The River, which the network plans to preview around the country with screenings in movie theaters, college campuses, etc. to spread word of mouth. Lee said that the network did the same with rookie Suburgatory and other fall shows and is planning to employ the strategy for future series too.
Lee declined to address the status of negotiations with the stars of Grey’s Anatomy whose contracts are up at the end of the season but sounded optimistic about the feature of the veteran medical drama. “Grey’s came roaring back this season, and Shonda has a vision like nobody else, so it’s really, really strong.”
ABC will not be rushing to make a decision on the future of its only remaining daytime drama General Hospital in light of the September launch of Katie Couric’s new daytime talk show in the soap’s time slot. “Maybe this year, maybe next year,” Lee said. “It depends on how the other shows (The Chew and The Revolution) do, so again, not a decision we’ll have to make immediately.”
Lee on introducing 2 new series with “bitch” in the title (though neither is spelled out), Don’t Trust The B—- In Apartment 23 and GCB: “Don’t Trust is is show with so much attitude…we felt it reflected the irreverence and the outrage of the show. GCB, which officially stands for Good Christian Belles (he laughs) also reflects the irreverence of the show. But it’s not a word that we can use in broadcast for our titles. It happens to be we have two, but we’re spreading them out for a couple of months.”

Private Practice after Dancing With The Stars probably won’t work.
It should be noted that private practice will be moving to Tuesday’s to take over body of proof— not castle
Cougar Town will replace Work it after its cancellation meaning they know this piece of turd won’t make it. Sorry for being a Captain Obvious.
Cougar Town won’t last past this season. It’s going to be just filler. I think ABC will go with what has worked for ABC 20 years ago and is working now FAMILY comedies along the lines of Last Man Standing, they already have in the works Kristi Alley’s new comedy, along with Reba, and Jim Belushi. Unless they can shove Cougar Town on Wednesdays after Modern Family I don’t see it returning next season.
I don’t know about you guys but I’m liking this guy Paul Lee
They need to let Cougar Town go to another network that will actually respect it.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is still on the air?! Oh my goodness…
Let Cougartown die a peaceful death. Let it end on the Hawaii episodes and throw away the rest.
I’ve seen the first 3 episodes of Scandal and its excellent…definitely on par with Grey’s Anatomy if not better. I think Shonda has another winner.
Has ABC learned nothing from the exploits of “Cougar Town”? Controversial titles can really hurt the audience for shows. Just give them different titles already. No one even knows how to discuss a show called “GCB” or one with “B—-” in the middle of it. “Good Christian Belles” is fine. Why not just call it “Don’t Trust the Girl in Apartment 23″?
It kills me how long names keep coming up. My favorite is: Two Guys a Girl, and a Pizza Parlor. The name alone, told you that was going to flop.
It’s amazing to me that Hollywood*, can’t figure out marketing at all.
* By Hollywood I am referring to the Entertainment, News, Industrial Complex. aka Movies, and Episodic TV.
How about just pick a title that people will say? Or is the potential audience expected to call it “Don’t Trust the B Word?” Dashes and symbols don’t usually pay off very well. Just ask $#%! My Dad Says or Prince when he was using a female symbol/question mark sign for his name.
I think ‘work it’ is here to stay. Cougar Town will probably be shipped to Fridays. Plus it repeats badly given it’s serialized nature.
“Cougar Town” is a really good show and should have a nice run. I think ABC was surprised by the success of its new and recent comedies and ended up not having a place to put it.
This sucks, so no Happy Endings in the second half of april or in may? Should I be thankful it at least made it to a “full” second season or keep complaining? Why do they keep insisting in these horrible shows (Work it, Man Up, Last Man Standing, Bitch) instead of giving the really good shows they have a chance?
Now they have a “plan” for Cougar Town? Because they “love the show”? If you love it so much, why the hell give Work It and Man Up a go and let Cougar Town start their slow death by not giving it a shot in September…October…January…February…ever…
And Private Practice should end or be cancelled. Addison didn’t get pregnant and she didn’t get the kid at the end of the episode either, is there anything Shonda won’t do to this woman? Any storyline she won’t recycle?
GCB won’t last 13 episodes. If it does, it’s only because the ‘some people’ can’t admit they don’t understand anyone outside of Ho(llywood), NoHo, SoHo, WeHo, Malibu (Beach and Colony), Tribeca, Brentwood, Beverly Hills, or the Village.
It sounds like Gossip Girl with MILFs (or maybe Real Housewives of OC), and a side of Flipping Out. Fail.
Cougar Town, albeit a crappy show, is much better than the pile of turd they have airing now in “Work It”, so Cougar Town would be a nice fit with Last Man Standing on Tuesdays at 7 PM CT as Work It will be CXLed soon enough.
The Silence about PAN AM is Deafening….
JUST CANCEL IT OFFICIALLY ALREADY
Any way you try to dress it up, show titles for “Apt 23″ and “Good Christian XXX”,it’s offensive. All women should be outraged and send ABC a message by not tuning in to these and other shows on the network. Since when did it become acceptable to refer to women in this manner as easily as one says “Good Morning”? As for me I stop dead in my tracks when the word or in this case a thinly disguised moniker is spoken. It is simply not as acceptable. As for the argument the word implies a woman is strong, confident, independent, etc. If you want to describe me in those terms, use those terms!. Do not use a word that means a female dog and is used to degrade women from the board rooms (in this case ABC) to the street corner. Shameful ABC!
