Last Resort, the large-scope drama from The Shield creator Shawn Ryan and feature writer Karl Gajdusek, is staffing up while waiting a formal pilot green light from ABC. The Sony TV-produced project, which already has a hefty pilot production commitment, has tapped Casino Royale helmer Martin Campbell to direct the pilot and has also hired a line producer and a casting director. Last Resort is a thriller set in the near future when the country is very fractured and revolves around the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who become hunted after ignoring an order to shoot nuclear missiles. They escape to a NATO listening outpost where they publicly declare themselves to be the world’s smallest nuclear nation with 24 nuclear warheads. The show explores the society the fugitives create, the natives they meet and how what they’ve done affects the group and its unity. When Last Resort‘s pickup becomes official, it will join the just greenlighted Roland Emmerich one-hour, a metaphysical drama set against the backdrop of the 2012 Presidential race. Early in the pilot pickup process, ABC seems to be going for big-swing dramas helmed by feature directors. Campbell most recently directed The Green Lantern.

Although buried in the clusterfuck of the Green Lantern, Martin Campbell is a proven, solid, and successful director with seriously good credits.
Hope this is terrific!
“The Mouse that Roared” meets “The Hunt for Red October”!
Bald is back!
Will there be a disappointing smoke monster in this show too?
i have read this. it is GREAT. if they don’t pick it up, they are stupid.
Sounds like it could be kind of Battlestar-y. I like it! I hope they give this the green light
Love the premise. Sounds like a series with some teeth… and the networks need a lot more o’ that.
No smoke monsters in this one! But plenty of nuclear subs, missiles and islands. Effects are already brewing and nothin’ will be like that silly smoke monster(“smokey”).
Love the premise. ABC would be insane to not pick it up.
Are you talking about Lost’s smoke monster?
This sounds really good, and the best part is how original it is for an ABC show.
Man, have read several of Gadjusek’s features and am a big fan, always thought the guy could flat-out write…
AND THEN…and then I saw TRESPASS. Just…wow. WOW. I wracked my brains for ways that movie could have been even worse at the script level and just couldn’t come up with any. It was a true skidmark celluloid, and it wasn’t all Nic Cage’s fault.
So, it’s just “Lost” with nukes then?
Sounds good. Please don’t be melodramatic and just give us some good action/adventure.
I hope that guy on the right gets better soon!!!
This show will not work.
The concept is too big for network TV.
They will pay for it put it on and it will go. Terra Nova.
Sounds like a rip-off:
