Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage.
At a late Friday afternoon panel session promoting A&E’s forthcoming summertime western saga Longmire, the question was asked as to whether the success of FX’s Justified perhaps smoothed the path wheels for Longmire to see the light of primetime. Exec producer John Covony answered succinctly: “The short answer is no.” Why not? “Well, in Hollywood, some ideas are gestating as others are coming to life.” He added that while he’s happy that Justified “helped to make people think about westerns,” he made the point that Justified star Timothy Olyphant and Longmire lead Robert Taylor were quite different in both style and substantive approach to their roles. Exec producer Greer Shephard went further, suggesting that Olyphant’s character “is a man tortured and driven by demons” while Taylor’s is defined by “love and loyalty.” She also doesn’t believe that Justified is even a true western, she thinks it’s more of “a Southern Gothic show.” But Longmire — “The integrity and moral steadfastness of Walt Longmire are tentpoles of the classic American cowboy.”
That may well be true. But this is also true: Taylor, who portrays Longmire, isn’t even American but Aussie. Someone wondered why it seems that more and more Australian actors are snatching the all-American alpha male roles away from U.S. performers. Shephard explained: “To be honest, a trait that was very, very hard to find” in the casting process “was humility. And there are a lot of metrosexuals as well” among American actors who auditioned. Where have you gone, Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford?

No worries, the show will fail! Westerns are lame, period. If it doesn’t fit into the here and now it has no relevance. Good luck making it work but Justified will continue for years!!
Longmire = Fail!!
Is AE giving this a real budget and allowing the writers to make the show character driven. So the character will grow with every episode. Then maybe this show could possibly give a better idea of a contemporary western. I guess we all will know when we see the final product.
So far since deadwood. Justified Raylan Givens is the closest thing to quality/Gritty Western Hero. AMC Hell On Wheels has been a big mess so far. If Long Mire can improve upon idea of a western set in modern times. Then good for it. If this is way to draw away comparisons to Justified. So it can a fair chance. Then okay the final product had better be good and progressive.
Although I am not an Aussie…one thing I have learned that real women like to see a rough rugged man and nothing like the visual effect from a good western. Maybe you just haven’t found your way to be strapped on a good saddle. May Longmire ride long and hard!
In some parts of the country, the cowboy life IS the here and now every darn day. I know, because I live it.
I have high hopes for this show and anticipate it to be as entertaining as the books. I also hope the show has as much success as Justified, which I’ve been a fan of since the first episode.
Why would you even read the article if you don’t even like the project? Seems like your’re the type that goes out of there way to be negative. Sad.
Well notacowboyfan you are intitled to your opinion but its obvious you don’t know a good movie or show when you see one. You could not have watched Dances with Wolves (Academy Award for Best Picture) or Unforgiven(Again Best Picture) or High Noon(Best Picture) or even The Searchers which is listed by the American Film Institute along with Unforgiven-High Noon- and Shane as in the Top 100 movies of all time. I am only going to mention a few. Now I am not into love stories but I am not so stupid to think they don’t make good ones. The only explanation for your lack of movie expertise would be your age. I’m guessing you are not very old(maybe even a child). Take a word from the wise- stick with the Cartoons kid- the plot is much easier to understand for an underdeveloped mind!
Justified is absolutely a Western. Just because there are no tumbleweeds blowing through the streets and people riding on horses does not change that.
I might still check out Longmire. Could be good.
Reason humility is hard to find in many of today’s actors, is because none of them have any talent. If they started off in theatre — not music videos or Disney tv or even commercials — they’d have a solid foundation in the basics of dramatic acting — humility. The lack of, which leads to the fall of many a great characters in all forms of drama.
I won’t even mention Shakespeare in this regard.
Oops! I did it.
Too many metrosexuals? there’s that lack of talent again. Just push the look.
Thank yourself for that — present day Hollywood casting directors; producers; agents;
too many morons calling themselves acting coaches.
Thank God for the internet and VOD. As a director-writer, I get to go directly to the global audiences outside of the norms of the Hollywood system…with my own indie features using talented, hard working unknowns ( or those Hollywood ignores because they don’t smile just right ) who have strong foundations in the basics and continue to work hard of their craft…their trade…and not their facials.
Me thinks thou doth protest too much Mark Georgeff… The “Green Eyed Monster” perhaps?
100 % agree.
Nail-Head-Hammer.
My response was in agreement with you MARK GEORGEFF not Shakes.
GODOT 2 (or simply WAITING)
Bare stage. Lights up.
Mark: You’re brilliant but misunderstood.
Vincent: No. You’re brilliant but misunderstood.
Mark: No. You’re brilliant bur misunderstood.
Vincent: No. You’re brilliant but misunderstood.
Fry Cook: Order’s up!
Lights out.

The trait that was hard to find was not humility. It was masculinity. We have so feminized American men they don’t know how to be males anymore – they’re too busy being “sensitive” and getting mani-pedis. And these ARE the straight ones. So we have to look outside the U.S. for men who can portray men.
Longmire sounds cool and sexy to me…I look forward to checking it out.
An Aussie playing an americian cowboy ?? A joke , I’m sure their were many americian choices !!! I know for a fact that two really good americian actors tested , they both are on other tv shows that are hits !!!!
You are aware that there are farms, horses, and “country folk” all over Australia right?
So, that just leaves the accent.
If the American actors tested and they went with this guy–then he beat them out. Plain and simple. I’m sure the other guys were good and could’ve easily played the role, but there is always one actor who just feels right to the people making the show. Sometimes it’s an American…sometimes it’s not.
May the best man win.
How sour are your grapes?
Why are more and more Aussies being hired for American shows? Uh, could it be that they are WAY cheaper to employ? Money is always the bottom line.
How will Longmire differ from Justified? Well, Justified is entertaining, whereas Longmire (from what I read so far) promises to be boring. Really boring.
Judy, what have you read that leads you to believe it will be boring? you should give it a chance. read one of the books if you’re a reader? it’s great fiction. real fiction. something hard to find in television these days…
If you have read any of the books, and found them to be boring, I can promise you are a city person who has not struggled with the elements, or had to work outside for a day in your life.
Pick up any of the books and give it a chance.
Longmire is based on a series of mysteries written by Craig Johnson. The books are excellent and the author has participated in the creation of the series. Read the books – watch the first three programs. THEN bash the show if you still dislike it.
i have read every scratch of the pen that craig johnson has written. if the series can incorporte the Wy landscape and the true Wy character of the people and lifestyle i will watch every second and will not be bored in the slightest. who plays Walt’s Indain pal? Victoria will have to be something to match or exceed expectations. For those who have not read mr johnson’s books –give the series a chance.. i can’t wait.
Sounds good. We’ll be watching. Love westerns!
BS that Justified didn’t inspire this knockoff! Without the Elmore Leonard influence and Justified’s best in TV casting Longmire will be one more western heading for the scrap yard. When does season 4 start?
How sad that you’ve already come to that conclusion before the first episode of Longmire has yet to air. Oh well. I’ll definitely be tuning in on June 3rd!
I’m saddened that you’ve already come to that conclusion before seeing one entire episode of ‘Longmire.’ I’m a fan of ‘Justified’ and a reader of Elmore Leonard books. I’m also a Craig Johnson fan, read all of his books and have been looking forward to this show, because I see the difference between the situations and the styles. Hope you’ll reconsider and at least give ‘Longmire’ a try.
It appears A&E couldn’t clone “Storage Wars” yet again and are desperate for a “Hog(sic) The Bounty Hunter” replacement.
Shows like Justified & Longmire have been a long time coming. Always a fan of Westerns, whether modern day or old West, I have missed them during the times that there were none. I collect Western movies. I stumbled onto Justified & have been miserable while it has been off the air. I told my friends & they are now Justified fans. When Longmire was advertised I hoped it would be good & it is great. I have no complaints about either show. I own all the seasons of Justified & will own all of Longmire as they come available. Both shows have great actors in the supporting rolls & I am so excited that Justified will be back on January 8th. Now I need a starting date for Season II of Longmire. Keep up the good work. I have also started reading the Longmire books & have ordered the Elmore Leonard books. I knew there was something about the style of Justified I liked & then discovered that Elmore Leonard wrote the wonderful Desperado Series that was only made into 5 two hour TV Series over a period of years. Wish that series would continue as well. Keep up the good work.
