RATINGS RAT RACE: ABC Dramas Hold Up Well Against NFC Game, ‘Idol’ Gets Sampled
UPDATE, 1 PM: CBS and Fox have released updated numbers for yesterday’s AFC and NFC championship games. The close AFC contest, won by the New England Patriots, averaged 48.7 million viewers, the largest audience for an afternoon AFC Championship Game in 30 years — since January 10, 1982 (San Diego-Cincinnati on NBC). Overall, it was the second-most-watched AFC Championship Game (early or late) in 30 years, behind last year’s New York Jets-Pittsburgh Steelers game (54.9 million), which aired in the late window. The NFC Championship game on Fox, won by the New York Giants in overtime, scored an average audience of 57.6 million viewers, down a fraction from the last time the NFC title game aired in primetime two years ago. Sunday’s game ranked as the third-most-watched conference championship game ever, behind the 1982 Dallas Cowboys-San Francisco 49ers face-off (68.7 million viewers on CBS) and the Minnesota Vikings-New Orleans Saints overtime battle in 2010 (57.9 million viewers on Fox).
PREVIOUS, 9 AM: The ratings for the two highly contested Sunday NFL championship games are in. The AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens drew an overnight household rating/share of 29.1/51 on CBS — the highest rating in the metered markets for an afternoon AFC Championship in 18 years. It was up 2% from the previous afternoon championship game CBS carried in 2010 (New York Jets-Indianapolis Colts) and up sharply from the much-hyped Partiots-Denver Broncos face-off a week ago (20.6/23). The Patriots-Ravens game peaked at a 34.9/56 from 6-6:15 PM ET. Following in the later window was the NFC Championship Game on Fox, the New York Giants-San Francisco 49ers matchup, which posted a 33.4/48, the highest overnight rating for a conference championship game in 17 years. It was up a tenth from the last time the NFC title game aired in the later window two years ago (Minnesota Vikings-New Orleans Saints). The ratings peaked in the overtime to a 39.3/55.

Brady is a prick. No TD passes and 2 picks and he spikes the ball after his “brave” TD “leap.” I hope Ray Lewis remembers his big mouth for next year.
Glad the Giants won because I don’t think the 49ers could’ve taken down the Pats.
U suck, Brady rules!
“Brady is a prick”? Wow, spoken like a true class-act Ravens fan. Jackoff!
Oh, and “jackoff!” is classy?
Gentlemen, gentlemen! Let’s save all that energy for the Super Bowl.
Ray lewis is now retired. Baltimore can say he still plays but….time to upgrade or be left for last next year.
Ray Lewis should have backed up his mouth yesterday. Today is too late, and next year he’ll be even older than he is now.
Hey Peyton,
You’ll be backing up Luck next year. No team has dominated like the Pats for 10+ years. Plus, Pats have 6 picks in first three rounds this year!
Hey, Ray Lewis is not a bad guy, regardless of what team you pull for. He showed nothing but class after yesterdays loss…Don’t hate a player for the remarks of an idiot fan. Great games, but only one team can win. I respect and enjoy the talent of all the teams that are in the play-offs (I am totally unbiased because I LOVE the PACKERS)
Largest audience huh? of morons that is… proof that our country has been dumbed down more than ever… no wonder why we don’t do anything about anything… wait… here’s another beer for you.. you drunks!
I’ll drink to that.
And when the British go mad for soccer or the Japanese go wild for baseball… they are also morons?
So what did you watch beside the title games? Real Housewives? HGTV? The Food Network? Bravo? Getouttahere.
Go Pats!
Hey how are those colts doing? loser.
I heard the celtics lost to the wizards last night. (said in the most monotone way possible)
Hey Peyton,
Who is the p…? Did you selectively choose not to see Lewis’ hit in the small of Brady’s back after he had already crossed the goal line? They are two warriors, great players both. It’s called football, contact sport.
Peyton – Not sure if Brady is a pr1ck but it is annoying to see his name headline the news instead of the Pats defense considering Brady’s poor performance. Pretty obvious you’re a Brady/Pats-hater. FYI- Ray Lewis won’t have a next year… if you keep up with football at all.
Joan – It wasn’t a late hit. Brady dove head first, would you rather have had Ray Lewis hit him straight in his helmet? If Ray Lewis aimed and successfully hit Brady in “the small of his back”, he’s definitely the best LB to ever play the game. Speaking of “selectively choose” lol, I don’t think it would be a smart decision to wait for Brady to cross the goal line for a TD, and then decide to hit him.
IMO, Brady is overrated (see Matt Cassel’s season with the Pat’s system) and Ray Lewis should go hit Billy Cundiff in the “small of his back”.
Even though he was not there at the end there is one word that describes the resurgence in TV ratings for the playoffs…Tebow.
Pot calling the kettle black much, apparently.
Brady is a prick for spiking the ball? Seriously? He should’ve spiked the ball after Lewis DRILLED HIM IN THE BACK. He even said he sucked after the game was over…what more do you want?
BTW your team is a bunch of thugs. Same player who twisted Gronkowski’s ankle is the same one who ruined Brady’s knee and ended Welker’s season.
The only “thugs” are the players on the Ravens.
Waah!!! Wide left, that’s all that counts. Better luck next year shankapotomus!!
Number of viewers breakdown available?
At least without the Ravens and Ray Lewis in the Super Bowl the citizens of Indianappolis can walk their streets safely!
actually, Lewis’ entoruage murdered that dude in Atlanta in a year when the Ravens werent in the SB. So the streets of Indy may not be safe.
I understand that Raven’s kicker Billy Cundiff (missed field goal) and 49ers punt returner Kyle Williams (fumble) will be spending the off season in a Taliban village, “where they’ll feel safe.”
Here in Boston, we called the AFC Championship Revenge Bowl I (the New England Patriots having avenged a loss to Baltimore in the playoffs a couple of years back).
And with New England facing the New York Giants in the Super Bowl, Boston is calling this game Revenge Bowl II (since the Giants won Super Bowl XLII, ending New England’s hopes for a perfect seasonb).
Glad most of America got to watch one of the worst calls NFL history. Raven’s Lee Evans catches the ball in the end zone and clearly in control with both hands on the ball. He turns 90 degrees and gets the second foot down before Sterling Moore knocks the ball loose. On a open field, that’s a fumble.
If it’s a fumble he fumbled out of the end zone, which would result in a touchback and Patriots ball on the 20. Granted, it would have made the end less painful for Ravens fans but the outcome wouldn’t have changed.
No it would have been possession and a TD since he was IN the endzone. It would have have been a touchback if he fumbled INTO the endzone.
Hey Thrownatbirth, go to the CBS Sportsline site where they have an article, along with a video, of that non-catch. The ball was knocked loose and already on its way out of the receivers hands before his second foot hit the ground. Incomplete pass on a great play by the Pats defender.
Someone should start a doc/reality show RIGHT NOW on what it’s like to be Kyle Williams!
I think they have that and it’s called “Beyond Scared Straight.”
It seemed a good bet that one of the Harbaugh teams would be in the Super Bowl. Who would have thought none would be there and as a result of special team mistakes!? Both the Pats and Giants deserved the advance. Amazing how a 9-7 team got hot at the right time. It was only a couple of months ago that fans were asking for the coach to be fired. Deja vu 2007?
Patriots have no chance. Giants will stomp them by 4 TDs.
I see the giants winning but by four tds? You fans should really calm down.
Just like 4 years ago….. GO NEW YORK GIANTS !!!!!!!
I LOVE YOU ELI !!!!!
Technically the Ravens won. Evans caught the ball in the end zone for a touchdown, had full possession and was stripped of the ball only after the catch was made. Why this was not challenged is beyond me. Then again, everyone with a stake in this league wanted to see golden boy Brady in the Superbowl again, and that’s what happened. Ka-ching.
The rule states you must complete the catch….he did not.
Ravens Got Robbed, I’m a Ravens fans but every scoring but Evans lost control of the ball before booth feet were down.
Should have taken a time-out prior to the field goal attempt since play clock was down to 4 seconds before the ball was ever snapped, too rushed.
Oh great…another Superbowl nobody gives a crap about.
Yeah, nobody except for the 60+ million who’ll be watching it. Idiot.
More like 120 million people in America will watch SB XLVI.
They are saying it will be the MOST watched televisions show of all time beating the last episode of M.A.S.H.
Supposedly, the last Super Bowl beat the “M*A*S*H” series finale for the most number of people to ever see a single TV program on a single network (excluding special news events that were on multiple networks; i.e. the funeral of President Kennedy, the moon landing, or the September 11th terror attack).
The 49ers beat themselves…
Brady’s admitted yesterday was a crap outing. The NE defense should be given credit for this one, for sure. And all of you NE/Brady haters…see ya next year! And make sure to say hi to T-Fizzle and the Crew. By the way, you think Ray Lewis is gonna put out a “hit” on Shank Cundiff? I mean, Ray DOES have the experience in that field…and he won’t be doin’ much after this season anyway. Oh, and sure, the Ravens “technically won”. Whatever you’re smokin’ dude, can you spare some?
NBC will see boffo numbers for this matchup. NFL is king.
Win or lose, Tom Brady is in his 5th Super Bowl, that says a lot! Now for the second half on my prediction, Pats exact revenge on the Giants.
Turnovers will hurt you no matter what, no matter how many times you commit them, just like the dreaded walks in baseball. Giants to win the Super Bowl, but not by much.
The only area of discussion concerning the Patriots-Ravens game should be the debate on whether the Patriots and their fans “own” or “rule” the Ravens and their fans. I say “own”, but I can see the point of those who maintain that “rule” is more accurate.
