It’s routine for Big Media moguls to give money to political parties and causes. Rarer for them to publicly back candidates.
Rarer still for them to do it on the Internet. But on the eve of the Iowa caucuses, Rupert Murdoch stunned everyone inside and outside media in recent days by tweeting praise for GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, who has been rising in the polls. “Good to see santorum surging in Iowa. Regardless of policies, all debates showed principles, consistency and humility like no other.” And then came this Murdoch endorsement Monday night: “Can’t resist this tweet, but all Iowans think about Rick Santorum. Only candidate with genuine big vision for country.” It was Murdoch’s first weekend of tweeting: he began on Saturday during a family vacation on St Barts in the Caribbean. He used his verified Twitter account @rupertmurdoch accompanied by a very unflattering photo of himself.
Rupert’s praise for Santorum is being seen as the equivalent of a fourth-down conversion for the ex-Fox News analyst and former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. But Murdoch’s tweets show that he likes a lot of political figures: Ron Paul (“Great oped in WSJ today on Ron Paul. Huge appeal of libertarian message.”), NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, even a Democrat (“Obama decision on terrorist detention very courageous – and dead right!”)
But most amusing is how Rupert is using Twitter to promote his own News Corp products: the opinion page of the Wall Street Journal, a “great” book from HarperCollins publishers, the history of the New York Post, the replacement show for Glenn Beck on Fox News (“Got to watch Foxnews at 5 EST. Liberal Bob Beckel and team great replacement for Beck and much more fun.”). And, of course, Fox Filmed Entertainment: “Saw Fox film Descendants. Thank God, one to be proud of. Star Geo Clooney deserves Oscar, maybe film too.” … “I LOVE the film “we bought a zoo”, a great family movie. Very proud of fox team who made this great film.”
So how long before Murdoch’s Twitter addiction wanes? Maybe any minute. As Murdoch replied to one of his Twitter followers on Sunday: “…I’m getting killed for fooling around here and friends frightened what I may really say!”

I’m no Glenn Beck fan by any means. But Murdoch’s tweet about him seemed – I don’t know – petty, maybe? Not sure of the word to describe it. But considering how much money Murdoch’s channel probably made off Beck at one time, I’m not sure he should be too negative about Beck’s old show – especially since he’s the one who, more or less, put it on the air.
So how long before Murdoch’s Twitter
addiction wanes?

Never!!!
For don’t you know once you get bitten by the Twitter bug, it’s terminal.
So yes, the only way Murdoch will get cured of the Twitter bug is on his death bed besides he has got a certain company to promote.
$h*! Our Boss Says
Coming next fall.
Rupes is so cute since you know this is the Tiger Wife tweeting with her non-pie fighting hand.
Hes an old guy, that never used the medium before. Hes using it to humanize him, and if you guys yell on him too much for being naive.. it will work.
EXACTLY. See, Rupert is NOT Emperor Palpatine, pulling the strings of US media. He’s just an old guy who likes dogs. Taking a page from Buffett’s folksy wisdom.
Come on! One of his assistants posts. Does Murdoch really care about engaging the little people? This is all phony PR. I thought he only cared about newspapers? A man his age is never relevant.
Again.. Really? This guy’s empire is on the line for hacking cell phones of dead teenagers and celebrities and he’s now tweeting cheers for Rick “Man on Dog” Santorum?
If you think watching right-wing crazy people is entertaining, it’s time to remember just how much influence these folks have over your daily lives now that they are, or pitch for, the 1% that owns everything.
R seems to have recovered nicely. No longer the forgetful, confused, beleaguered old man who testified before Parliament.
So he’s flogging Fox product on Twitter like Puffy pushing Ciroc vodka. Snore. I’d like to see a post “Having moment of regret over bugging politicos, actors and various celebs. Also poor missing dead girls. Regret over getting caught that is- LOL. My son is such a weenie- memo to self: must order DNA test ASAP.”
The best comment in a month here! Kudos.
What would be really “tweet” is if Mr. Murdoch would please release the 1966-68 20th Century Fox “Batman” TV series (with Adam West, Burt Ward, et al) on DVD and Blu-Ray!
Santorum would make the better candidate against Obama. Where middle of the road Romney has a chance Santorum has none.
There’s a reason Santorum lost his senate seat by a staggering margin. Santorum would be a disaster for Republicans.
I don’t know if ANY of the Republican candidates would be anything BUT a disaster for the Republicans. I don’t recall seeing a field that was either this loopy (Bachman, Perry, Cain), or unappealing (the rest). can’t see the American voters getting behind any of them. Of course, I couldn’t see how anyone could vote for Bush the second time around, so who knows.
He is right about We Bought A Zoo being a very good movie. To bad the Fox Marketing Department wasnt up for the job, It was not a Xmas movie as it was marketed. The poster laid it out as a Xmas movie and all that implies. The stupid ribbons around the animal necks took the essence of the story and triviliazed it. What would the have done if it was released around July 4…have firworks coming out of the lions ass. It was a story of a family dynamic that needed a change to correct their course and relationships.
Who was the concept leader on this one should apologise to Rupert and all involved in the making of the movie for doing a poor job promoting it. Beththeduck
Funny how much Rupert looks like Charles Bukowski.
No single individual has done more to harm America than Rupert Murdoch and his FOX ‘News’, whose sole intent is to mislead Americans into continuing to support ‘Trickle Down’ economics.
Rupert doesn’t do anything without an ulterior motive. With Santorum, it’s to hedge bets due to Fox News ignoring Santorum this entire campaign. With Bloomberg, it’s to maintain the appearance of non-partisanship, above-it-all. Same with the Obama tweet.
Rupert is all about Rupert, which is to say, all about News Corp. Nothing should be taken at face value. It’s not how the guy built a media empire out of a few crappy Australian newspapers he inherited from daddy.
Celebs use Twitter to promote their stuff all the time. Does this really shock you? LOL! In fact, some of them are paid to do so (see: Kardashian, Kim).
So, where’s the article about Mayer’s obscene and bigoted rants when he tweets? Oh, right. Liberals get a pass in Hollywood.
Oscar Mayer?
I’m pretty sure Oscar Mayer only tweets about weenies – just like Rupert does…
Louis B Mayer?
Before you get your conspiracy panties in a bunch, this is news because Murdoch is a CEO of a major entertainment empire who suddenly has began tweeting. Commenting on the majority of celebrity tweets out there isn’t news.
I’m sure if Steven Spielberg started tweeting his candid thoughts, it would also be news.
Why does everything have to be about liberal vs conservative?
Maybe he’ll like Twitter so much he’ll decide to buy it and turn it into a roaring success just like MySpace.
