UPDATE: Fox has released time-adjusted fast nationals for American Idol, which was adjusted up to a 7.4 rating in 18-49 and 21.9 million viewers, bringing the year-to-year drops to 24% and 17%, respectively.
PREVIOUS: Eleven seasons in, American Idol is starting to come down to earth. Last night’s Season 11 premiere of Fox’s ratings juggernaut drew 21.6 million viewers and a 7.2/18 among adults 18-49. That was down 26% in the 18-49 demo and 18% in viewers from last year’s premiere (fast nationals-to-fast nationals) and the reality veteran’s lowest-rated season opener since the show’s inauspicious debut in summer 2002 (see historical data below). It also represents Idol’s biggest ratings drop between seasons. Last season’s premiere, also at the time the lowest-rated since Season 1, posted the second-biggest drops of 12% (viewers) and 17% (adults 18-49). A lot has changed since the show’s 10th season opener in January 2011. Back then, Idol was the only game in town in terms of big-scale singing competitions. Since then, two formidable rivals have entered the fray: NBC’s The Voice and Fox’s The X Factor, crowding the space.
Even at those levels, Idol is by far the highest-rated entertainment program on TV. It almost doubled the premiere ratings for X Factor and dominated primetime last night. As expected, the biggest casualties were the most vulnerable — in this case NBC’s fledgling 8 PM comedy block. Whitney (1.6/5) was down 20% from last week’s time-slot premiere to a series low. In its second airing, Are You There, Chelsea (1.8/4) was down 22% from its debut. NBC’s older skewing Harry’s Law (1.1/3) weathered the storm better, down 8%, while Law & Order: SVU (1.8/5) at 10 PM was down 10% for a series low even without Idol competition.
ABC’s 8-9 PM comedies also took a hit against Idol. The Middle (2.6/7) and Suburgatory (2.5/6) were down 10% and 14%, respectively, from last week to hit season lows. Modern Family (5.0/12) and Happy Endings (2.9/7) came out largely unscathed. Modern Family‘s much-talked-about “Lily says the F-word” episode was down a tenth from last week, as was Happy Endings. This was Modern Family‘s best-ever result against Idol, up 9% from last year. The network’s soap Revenge (2.5/6) was the only program last night to post ratings gains, up 4% from last week. Following an NCIS repeat, CBS’ Criminal Minds (3.2/8) was down 6% from its last original five weeks ago, and CSI (2.8/7) was down a tenth.
Here is historical data for the American Idol season premieres (this year’s ratings are fast nationals, all others are Live+Same Day):
1/18/12 21.6 million 7.2/18 in adults 18-49
1/19/11 26.3 million 9.8/26
1/12/10 29.95 million 11.8/29
1/13/09 30.45 million 11.7/28
1/15/08 33.48 million 13.8/32
1/16/07 37.44 million 15.8/36
1/17/06 35.53 million 15.3/34
1/18/05 33.58 million 14.0/33
1/19/04 28.96 million 12.9/30
1/21/03 26.50 million 12.4/30
6/11/02 9.85 million 4.8/14

I really enjoyed X-Factor. Love Cowell and his honesty. Not sure how much appetite I have for another one of these so quickly after that show.
Putting XF on before AI was a BIG mistake in programming by FOX, but the FOX people don’t know how to program anyway. Witness how many “new” shows they cancel quickly. I think the audience is fatigued, all these singing shows are cannibalizing each other.
The talent driven reality show landscape is far too crowded. Most of these programs, even the newer ones, have already peaked.
The question is not “will the public lose interest?’…the question is “how quickly?”.
YAY!!!!
THe numbers for SHITNEY and WHO EVEN CARES, CHELSEA are slip, slidin’ away…

I’m not a fan of either of these shows, but why the ‘yay!!!!’ and extreme joy at their misfortune? It makes you look very spiteful, bitter and petty.
Idol was so boring! For everyone that said XF was all camp and crazy should notice that the alternative that aired last night was as bland as bland can be.
XF is flashy with fast editing and music throughout. Idol has no volume increase ever and is strictly monotone.
When Simon makes changes to XF next season, people may be more interested in what he is serving.
Why isn’t Harry’s Law aired on Friday or Saturday. It would probably draw higher numbers.
compared to last year at this time… abc was up… modern fam was up .4 tenths in the demo… same for all the other timeslots on abc except middle which wad down a tenth… suburgatory up .3… compared to what was there last year… happy endings up .4 compared to cougar town… and revenue up .3 compared to off the map…
Please make Whitney go away forever. NBC should swallow their pride and cut their losses at this point. GOOD RIDDENS WHITNEY DON’T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU ON THE WAY OUT!
Who let the hillbillies in?
I’d be shocked if any of the shows currently airing on Wednesday on NBC are renewed for next season. Those numbers are abismal any way you look at them.
Not even the NBC PR dept can spin any of those numbers in their favour.
IDOL IS DONE, THE SEACREAST BOYCOT MAY BE THE NAIL IN THE COFFIN.
I think NBC realized that WHITNEY didn’t belong on their smart (if not very watched) Thursday night line-up. They paired her with Chelsea cos it makes sense tonally (both female, multi-cam, similar sense of comedy). But they basically doubled-down. NBC used a couple of cheap shows to try and establish a new night of comedy, and when Idol continues to beat them down, hopefully we’ll see them mercifully put to rest.
American Idol is tired! It feels like the same thing every year. Yes, a few of the singers are talented, but the operative words are “a few.” I have to say that I stuck with NBC for most of last night and thoroughly enjoyed Whitney. Chelsea is drop dead funny! Harry’s Law, well, there’s a reason the numbers held up against Idol. Law and Order can still “bring it” and as for late night, Jay Leno is at the top of his game. It’s amazing to see a comedy career peaking. I laughed so hard at the jokes and skits last night I almost peed my pants!
When America looks back at this, and we will, we will wonder why the hell we ever watched Simon Cowell and his overhyped, bloated karaoke contests.
You Whitney haters are creepy
Don’t love her show, but she’s funny and talented.
HARRY’S LAW is starting to look like many other lawyer/legal-type shows. Too much time spent in courts, not enough time spent on story. In essence, it’s the same old format… well, you get the picture; crime committed, suspects caught, defense attorney, witness, judge….
Time to go back to square one, with longer story lines and less court house scenes.
The ratings are down!! Wonder if it will soon be canceled??
After last year’s winner—who was a complete dud—can you blame anyone for tuning out this year?
Years ago there were a few “newsmagazines” then all the networks flooded the airwaves with newsmagazines, at one point there was one every night, sometimes there were two per night, when ratings dropped then they seemed to disappear one by one till were just a few.
It’s called OVERSATURATION having Idol follow Xfactor so close then add to that all the other reality singing competition shows and it’s going to bring them all down to earth.
They should change the name of that karaoke show to flyover idol. The premiere was 90% country. It’s clear that in the wake of McCreepy’s win, Idol is only interested in appealing to viewers whose parents are kin.
The biggest mistake Fox made was not using AI more to nurture other shows. Instead, all those two-hour blocks did nothing more than feed into local news. (The price you pay for two-hour PT.) Fox should have expanded to three hours on at least four nights – maybe even five (Sun – Thursday) and really develop a slate of comedies and dramas. Right now, their drama bench is in real trouble. House gone, Bones faltering fast (and in negotiations for probably last season). TN underperformed, Glee is sinking fast. There is still time because AI is still strong, but time is clearly running out.
Say goodbye to Whitney and Chelsea as it’s only going to get even worse for them now that AI, despite their ratings downfall, is still a juggernaut. However, AI is seriously losing their luster as well.
Though I think the writing on “Harry’s Law” could be improved somewhat-it is still one of my favorite programs & the only thing I watch on Nbc. It should be interesting to see if it can hold up against “Once upon a time” beginning in March. Who knows? Perhaps the move will generate some new viewers. As a big fan of Kathy Bates, I am certainly hoping for the best. Memo to Nbc:to me-viewers are viewers regardless of their age. It would be a shame if “Harry’s Law” was canceled ,because,by Nbc’s standards-they don’t like the age of the many viewers it attracts. I enjoy the show & I happen to be quite young myself. Thank you.
