EXCLUSIVE: Following his recent exit from New Wave Entertainment, veteran comedy talent manager Barry Katz is going solo again with the relaunch of Barry Katz Entertainment. All of Katz’s clients at New Wave will follow him to the new company including Jay Mohr, Christopher Titus, Bill Bellamy, Paul Rodriguez, Cheri Oteri, Nick DiPaolo and Faizon Love. Katz ran his original Barry Katz Entertainment for 15 years before selling it to New Wave at the end of 2003. Over the past eight years, he was involved in New Wave’s transformation into a full-service talent management, digital distribution, and production company with over 25 managers, producers, and development executives. The two sides parted ways last month when Katz’s contract was up. “After being a part of creating a different kind of management company — one that combined representation and production — I wanted to get back to focus less on the issues of a large company, and more on working with my clients in a more personal way to help them achieve their goals,” Katz said.
Through the years, Katz has been involved in the careers of such actor-comedians as Mohr, DiPaolo, Dave Chappelle, Whitney Cummings, Tracy Morgan, Anthony Clark, Darrell Hammond, Dane Cook, and Louie C.K. He has produced several features, including Employee Of The Month, Good Luck Chuck and My Best Friend’s Girl, all starring his former long-time client Cook. In TV he has executive produced over 30 specials, documentaries, reality shows and scripted series, most recently NBC’s freshman comedy Whitney. He is credited as creator of ABC’s The Next Best Thing and NESN’s Comedy All-Stars.

One interesting fact about Mr. Katz. He has never had an underling stay with him for a long period of time and develop a strong career of their own with him. That says something about the man. I don’t know anything else about him.
Ummm… How about Maureen Taran?
You’re wrong. And if you don’t know anything about him, it is best to keep quiet. No one needs your uninformed opinions.
Sensitive much? No offense meant, but why do you care what anybody says about Barry Katz, good or bad?
One interesting fact. The man running New Wave Ent’s Talent Management, Brian Volk-Weiss, started as Barry’s assistant.
Where is Dane Cook now?
Dane Cook is repped at UTA. He has no manager.
Since Barry did not protect Dane as his brother was stealing $10m, Dane did not see much value in Barry.
All I know is…. If he’s responsible for Whitney…than that ruins everything else he has done! Barry? What were you thinking?
Whitney Cummings is one of the funniest in the game. I think the show will get better over time like most shows. You dont put all ur good material in the first season. My only problem with her is that she doesnt seem to like black people that much cuz she has none on her show. Which doesnt make any sense because shes a very vulgar comedian and we culd appreciate her comedy more than whoever it is shes tryin to target.
I disagree – White People are just as vulgar as anybody on the planet.
“You dont put all ur good material in the first season.”
Huh?
Jay Mohr. With Katz from day one.
About 13 or 14 years ago I, being a new actor in town, went to go see Jay Mohr speak about his career and give acting career advice at a Learning Annex event in Santa Monica. Barry Katz was there as well. Not only was Jay great and funny, but he spoke for an extra hour and then stayed and signed pictures for every last person in line.
I talked with Barry briefly and he seemed pretty cool. I sent him and Jay each a thank you card for such a fun and interesting night. I’m sure Jay couldn’t respond to everything that was sent to him at the time, but Barry sent me a handwritten card in the mail acknowledging that he had received my card and he wrote me a nice little note.
I haven’t corresponded with either of them since so I can’t attest to their personalities of late, be they good or bad. I did however think that what Barry did was very generous so I wanted to share this story and throw a “thanks again” his way.
Barry’s a good guy.
He’s a person like everyone else. He’s neither “good” nor “bad”, nor “nice” nor “mean”.
Sometimes he’s one of those things. Sometimes he’s others. Sometimes he may seem to someone like one of those things, while at the same time seeming to himself like the other.
Why people constantly try to categorize others with simple basic descriptive words is beyond me.
(“Hey! I met that guy once! He was nice!” “Oh yeah? Well he screwed me over and laughed about it!” “He forgot who he friends are”. Blah blah blah. I mean…really? Are we adults here? Let someone else describe you in one word and insist to others that’s what you are 24/7. I’m sure you’ll disagree)
Barry’s approachable and friendly, which is more than you can say for a lot of agent/managers who’ve accomplished far less than he has.
barry katz is a very respectable man and has done many things for many people him leaving NWE is a loss for them he will do great things no matter what cut the guy a break hes a hollywood success…
Barry Katz is a great guy. He knows the business and he is very honest and to the point. I have known him for nine years and he has always given me advice and encouraged me to work harder. He is down to earth and is very successful. People in Hollywood can have their opinions about Barry Katz but they can’t deny his success.
I respect Barry and his hustle. I know him personally and enjoy seeing him and his amazing twin boys. I would recommend him to all upcoming talent in the comedy business.
I met Barry Katz a couple years ago, I have been in show business 40 years. I have never met a nicer guy in the business in my life. Everyone who works with talent should meet this man and learn. He is just full of love and makes you a better person. Anything he touches turns to gold because he cares. Most people don’t know this but his college degree is in working with disabled people. Need I say more.
