OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network’s yearly averages would be great if they only included January 1. The two-hour premiere of Oprah Winfrey’s new weekly primetime series Oprah’s Next Chapter on Sunday drew 1.1 million viewers and a 1.1 rating among women 25-54. It was the second highest-rated telecast on OWN behind the two-hour premiere of Season 25: Oprah Behind The Scenes on January 1, 2011 (1.2 million, 1.11 women 25-54). While solid for OWN, Winfrey’s new series, which features celebrity profiles shot on location, was nowhere near the big ratings for her syndicated daily talk show, which ended its run with 16.4 million viewers tuning in for the finale in May.
Meanwhile, ESPN yesterday aired the Bowl Championship Series doubleheader — the Rose Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl — for the second year. The Rose Bowl (9.9 overnight rating) posted a 15% year-to-year decline for a second consecutive time. But the Fiesta Bowl, which aired in primetime on the East Coast (9.0), shot up 34% after a 22% drop last year. Overall, ESPN was in positive territory, up 4% for the two games combined vs. 2011. ESPN also was the most-watched network — broadcast or cable — last night.

Is OWN expected to match the ratings of Oprah’s talk show finale? NBC can’t even match that number with their biggest shows. I think 1.2 million is pretty good for an upstart cable channel.
This is encouraging for OWN. However, it will be interesting to see what the numbers are after a month’s worth of shows vs. the first hyper promoted entree.
What’s ironic is that this premiere household number for Oprah on cable is lower than the syndicated Nate Berkus rating in broadcast which was just cancelled by Harpo and Sony. It shows you the “power” of sub-fees in keeping this medium viable.
Why bring NBC into this? Seriously.
My prediction will be that the National Championship game ratings will be dramtically down from prior years. Casual fans have no interest in 2 teams that already played earlier in the season.
Of course the ratings were down for the Rose Bowl, despite it being a great matchup and exciting game. Many of us (including me) had to return to work yesterday. Maybe next time don’t have the Rose Bowl on January 2nd.
Of course ABC could have aired the Rose Bowl in primetime and got big ratings while doing it, but that takes common sense on the part of the programming departments at ABC/ESPN sports.
Doug, they had it on a Monday because tradition doesn’t allow for the game or parade to be held if a NY’s day falls on a Sunday, hence why they move it to the following day. This will happen again in 2018 and count the NFL as a key factor in the NCAAs not airing these games on a Sunday too. Rose Bowl was a good game and the Fiesta did better because of the matchup this year versus the awful one last year. Too many bowl games though and that needs to be cut down some.
Man, is Oprah getting ginormous again!!
